acavailhez··on In Silicon Valley, many want sharing salary info to be less taboo
He may have been referencing the choice of Buffer to disclose the salaries of all employees: https://open.bufferapp.com/introducing-open-salaries-at-buff...

In that situation, he does not get to choose wether or not his salary is disclosed

acavailhez··on Ten Commandments of Sushi
This one specifically had 2 courses for sushi, one for 2,600 yens and the other for 3,100 yens (the difference being more sushi) This was the price for lunch, not sure in the evenings
acavailhez··on Ten Commandments of Sushi
I ate at this sushi-ya two days ago. The chef genuinely cares about his craft and will direct you on how to eat the sushi and when to drink sake. It was a great experience trying to speak to him in my broken Japanese with the help of his wife. I believe this place is quite unique, and not because of the food (which is incredible in itself). Most of the experience comes from the strong characters of the chef and his wife.

If you have the chance to visit Tokyo and happen to be in Shibuya around lunch I highly recommend this place.

Edit: I went there because a friend forwarded me the article and they were very interested in reading the article

acavailhez··on “If you live in the future”
and our children will marvel that error-prone human drove combustion engine vehicles going 30mph in the places we live.
acavailhez··on U.S. urges states not to allow general use of self-driving cars
Mostly people look at self driving cars in the light of "Would I be better driving my vehicle?"

I like to look a it from the other direction "Would I be better if everyone had a self-driven car?"

acavailhez··on Automatic: Your Smart Driving Assistant
https://www.getlocalmotion.com/ has a solution with a connected box, which integrates with existing corporate RFID badges to open the car.
acavailhez··on Log In or Create Account
An email can take a long time to reach your inbox, which would make it fairly frequent to have users wait more than one minute (up to several hours) to log in.
acavailhez··on Yours vs. Mine
In foreign languages with a polite form of "You" (such as French or German), there is an additional question: should a website use the polite of familiar form.

And it's widely accepted that a website should use the polite form.

acavailhez··on IntelliJ IDEA 12 Released
With the "Alt double tap and hold" keyboard shortcut, you can even remove all the side buttons
acavailhez··on Video: At one trillion frames per second, you can see light move
As it was stated before, it's not a 10^-12 seconds camera, it's a very short pulse laser cleverly synchronized with a very short span camera.

This experiment would not work with a moving object for instance. It still has interesting applications though.

acavailhez··on Physical assault by McDonald's for wearing Digital Eye Glass
Little background here (I'm French and grew up in Paris):

MacDonald's branding in France are really different in France than it is in the US, especially in Paris. Food is quite tasty, meat is fairly good, and even the colors are different: the flashy red/yellow has been replaced by a classy green/black two years ago.

And this specific MacDonald's is one of the biggest and best located in Paris (Champs Elysées)

Money laundering may have been a plausible explanation for a random US MacDonald's, it's really far fetched for this one.

acavailhez··on Micro-apartments next for S.F.?
Recently we got to this in Paris: https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/s720x720/396654_...

Quick translation: it's a 3.16 square meters (34 square feet) flat on sale in the 10th district in Paris.

acavailhez··on JQuery 2.0 Drops Support for IE6/7/8; API-Compatible with jQuery 1.9.
Elegant solution, but it's not possible if you bundle/minify all your scripts in one giant file, as more and more do.

I listen to electrohouse everyday. I'm not that into dubstep and I tend to not like it outside of coding, but it puts you into the zone pretty quickly, kind of like if the techno rythm stopped you from thinking normally.

For those interested, many of the mixes can be downloaded for free out there. I found :

http://soundcloud.com/tsnm all the TSNM no excuses mix, the 100 download limit is quickly maxed out on those though

acavailhez··on Why The TSA Fears Thirteen-Inch Laptops, But Not Eleven-Inch Ones
While I agree with you, the sysadmin would be able to provide evidence of specific actions that prevented something bad happening. TSA has made zero arrest related to terrorism so far.

Plus quoting the end of the article :

He said that the laptop rule is about appearances, giving people a sense that something is being done to protect them. “Security theater,” he called it.

acavailhez··on Social Vanity
That "63 years" comes out of nowhere and does not means anything.

Those 800m users combined have more than 2 millions years "per day". They spend way more time brushing their teeths.

For just a second spent, "liking" something on Facebook seems a pretty efficient use of time.

acavailhez··on Why do self-respecting hackers use Gmail & Co?
Nice to know, thanks for the tip

Did you try it and can compare it to gmail?

Especially on:

- linking other accounts (POP and IMAPS)

- spam detection

acavailhez··on Duck.com (not the search engine you might expect)
I have read here comments along the lines of "Anyone doing that would be evil, but here it's Google. So it's OK. Google would never do any harm" (it was a post about privacy)

The "Google is evil" trend may be an overreaction to those comments, but it embodies a sane criticism in my opinion. It gives a counterpart to the awkward "Google is my big brother"

acavailhez··on Google warns that rate limits, overage fees are coming to Maps API
I agree with that, it is quite similar to what they did with youtube and the unbearing amount of ad that one has to endure before watching a video now, after 5 years+ of making it available free of annoyance.
acavailhez··on 24 year old student lights match: Europe versus Facebook
To respond to the last sentence : Yes, things like that can be illegal. As an example, in France it is forbidden to count the number of people who get in & out of a subway at a given station.

I guess it's really a strong difference of culture between Europe and America : laws are made in Europe to make sure that people should not have to make the effort of guessing if a company will mess with their data or not. The company has to make that effort.

acavailhez··on Commit logs from last night
It seems to be late commits on public githubs account. Maybe filtered by curse word. The default picture on the avatars seems to be the little cute octopus thing of github.

Is Pilgrim the attention whore ? Can you elaborate on why it was a good move to censor the stories ? I'm really confused by this story.

Also, jonathantneal, why is your name showing up green ?

acavailhez··on A better introduction to Objective-C
This introduction is excellent, it's aimed at programmers who wants to get a first and painless overview on how Objective-C is coded and how to read Objective-C code. It gives you all the subtleties of the language, compared to the other (the unusual method calling syntax being the first). It's kind of a starting blocks for learning a new language, exactly what I look for when I learn a new langage.
acavailhez··on First employee of startup? You are probably getting screwed
I agree a lot with this, I think the very first employees may get high percentage of shares for half salaries, but very fast employees should just get regular salaries (& benefits if possible)
acavailhez··on Facebook Just Bowed Out of the Check In War With Foursquare
I was wondering about the same thing. The article is extremely enthousiast about Foursquare, which I had stopped to use over Facebook. Foursquare adds a gaming layer to check-ins, which tends to get boring with time. Facebook however adds its social layer, with the ability to passively say "Hey I'm there", and actually be read by people who might care.
acavailhez··on Show HN: My First Commercial Game Is Now Online
I just spent one hour playing your game, love it ! (will play again) The casual fast-paced rogue-like style is very neat ! I've never seen something quite similar

Not having to care about picking items up and choosing the best one to equip is very clever. It weirded me out at the begining but it really helps to build a spirit to the game.

The magic system, while not being the most intuitive thing in the game, also participate to the ambience. Bravo !

The major caveheat is really the absence of auto-saving and resuming a game. I already lost 3 characters beacause the game crashed, I've read here that it's in your TODO list, and I really think it should be your top priority, it will very fast get on players nerves.

Superb game anyways, shall I hint you contact the people behing TIGDB (The independant Game Database) ? I would love to leave a kind review here :)

acavailhez··on Facebook bug policy: Stick head in sand
Developping on top of Facebook Platform is very unsettling : always moving, inconsistent, under-documented, poor libraries outside of python and PHP, at least 3 types of access to the same data (deprecated REST API, FQL queries and Graph API), etc. Yet you get their gigantic audience and unprecedented data at hand, which is thrilling. Developping for Facebook is almost a separate kind of programing, with its own set of rules.
acavailhez··on Experienced Users View Reddit Differently
More specifically the check if it's an imgur.com link

As they are images, always available, quickly loaded, imgur links kind of optimise the thrill/time factor

acavailhez··on Jerry Seinfeld's Productivity Secret
It's a very good piece of advice, it has a "gaming" feeling in it.

It reminds me of the automated test suites you have in IDEs such as Netbeans, which display a huge green bar when 100% of your tests pass. It's such a goog feeling to see this green bar that you work harder to make tests pass again.
