abyssin··on DeepSeek makes the V4 Pro price discount permanent
It’s good and cheap, but don’t talk about politics to it or it might trigger some sort of censorship rule. You can see it think, then suddenly erase everything and suggest to switch to another subject, without explaining anything. I also had it output some sort of generic message about how the news outlets are in the service of the people. Both times I was surprised because I didn’t make any sensitive requests, neither illegal nor subversive. But it was a remotely political topic and it was enough. There was something both chilling and refreshing about it, since censorship in the west is usually more subtle.
abyssin··on I turned a $80 RK3562 Android tablet into a Debian Linux workstation
I hope we get similar momentum for all cheap Android phones!
abyssin··on EU to crack down on TikTok, Instagram's 'addictive design' targeting kids
I genuinely wonder if there would be any end user against banning these algorithms. I’d love rss style content providers back. Just let me freely subscribe to accounts.
abyssin··on Plasticity and language in the anaesthetized human hippocampus
What you call "conscious attention" seems to be a sort of cognitive process. What the article calls unconscious state is a state. The idea is that in some states, some processes (like predictive coding) don't take place.
abyssin··on Two Home Affairs officials suspended after AI 'hallucinations' found
I'm tempted to say it's fair game, since complexity has often had the advantageous side effect for governing bodies to make legitimate complaints impossible to voice for normal citizens.
abyssin··on Talking to strangers at the gym
it inspired me to talk to someone today and that person was happy about it!
abyssin··on Škoda DuoBell: A bicycle bell that penetrates noise-cancelling headphones
Any innovation benefiting cyclists and coming from the auto industry is a way to move attention away from the fact that cars are the most dangerous thing on the road.
abyssin··on Sweden goes back to basics, swapping screens for books in the classroom
A few years ago I went back to school. Hoping to manage some sort of Internet addiction, I bought a reMarkable 1 tablet. It did help me, but in retrospect I should've bought a black and white laser printer and a few boxes of paper. The ergonomy of paper is excellent after all, especially for a brain like mine that grew up without computers.

There's a major issue though, which is that course material get designed for use on computer screens first. But I have good hope that llm-based pipelines should help fix this issue.

I'm pivoting to mental health. But the trades are quite appealing too!

Rich's talks have been the apex of my programming career. I didn't like sitting in front of a computer to the extent needed to make a living from it, so I moved on to another industry. And maybe I wasn't smart enough to become competent in Clojure. But I'm thankful for the eureka moments that Rich offered me. He's such a beautiful mind.

This kind of patriotism is embarrassing, I don’t think I have ever seen it displayed by others than US citizens.
abyssin··on Antirender: remove the glossy shine on architectural renderings
It baffles me that contemporary architects don’t seem to be aware of the existence of rain. Why put white render on the facade of your building if it turns to green within five years? Why the hate for large overhangs that would solve this problem for cheap?
abyssin··on The truth behind the 2026 J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference
I've been told personally by the organizer of one of these conferences in the retail industry that illegal non-compete agreements and price-fixing agreements are made in the hallways. It was 10 years ago, and the whole conference existed for this reason.

abyssin··on Nearly all UK drivers say headlights are too bright
Not sure about your particular model but most front lights are designed to make the path visible in front of you, and not above.
abyssin··on Nearly all UK drivers say headlights are too bright
If your front light is correctly aiming down, there’s no need to disable the light. Modern bicycle led front lights are most often incorrectly set up, though.
abyssin··on Nearly all UK drivers say headlights are too bright
All roads in France except very small ones have white reflective lines.

abyssin··on Using Home Assistant, adguard home and an $8 smart outlet to avoid brain rot
One solution to how easy it is to get around self-inflicted blocks could be to find someone that agrees to manage your phone using the parental features. Personally I haven't found someone who I feel I could trust with such a power over me. Maybe a solution would be to pay somebody.

In Europe we already have the technology for everyone to live and retire comfortably. What we don’t have is the governments whose goal is for everyone to do so. I don’t see how more technology would solve a political issue.

abyssin··on I was wrong about the ethics crisis
I made the choice to change my occupation for a more moral one. One issue is, you lose a lot of social credit doing so. It’s seen as a personal failure rather than a choice. It might also be that implicitly challenging their choices makes people uncomfortable.

How do you meet people who take responsibility for their life design?

abyssin··on A comparison to Waymo’s auto liability insurance claims at 25M miles
A few weeks ago I had the nice surprise that my usual strategy of starting to walk on the pedestrian crossing to test if a car driver has the intention of stopping, resulted in an emergency stop from a Tesla coming for the right (it was a two-way street and I was testing the car coming from my left). The Tesla correctly stopped, in accordance with the law. Its driver wasn't happy.
