Update: it appears that there is a reason for it.

DDG doesn't show results if there isn't an exact match for the query it seems. It requires you to search the same query again for some reason.

Maybe this is an experiment of some sort, I'm not sure. Again, this doesn't happen on a VPN, but happens on my ip address.

And no corporate settings interfere with the browser, it's the personal device I tried on.

Another thing: when you search for "names database" on DDG there doesn't appear to be any results. No matter how much you try. I haven't found another query that yielded the same results.

I love their Prisma 2 product.

And it lives up to the hype, it is indeed a next generation ORM. Very useful when you're rushing to iterate.

FYI, I'm also a software developer/engineer. I do understand when glitches happen, but this seems too off.

If it works on a VPN, or a proxy server but not your own ip address. Are you really sure it's just a "glitch"?

And there are good reasons to think that way. Partially because there have been conspiracy theories about the "great reset", so this might be a way to stop the viral spread or whatever. I mean it's not too long ago when it came out that google censored queries to websites unless you typed the name directly in google.

When trust is broken, it's wise to be skeptical.

And yes, I did read the comments and rule out other things.

absolutelyrad··on Ask HN: Best Talks of 2020?
I attached the proof pic.

edit: To the comment below saying I'm lying.

Yes it does query. The first time I query, it doesnt give results. Then I query it again and it shows all results (same query, pressing the search icon again). This is stealthy censorship and an unsuspecting person wouldn't notice.

This doesn't happen for any other query. And it only happens with my work ip address, not a VPN.

Edit2: Still not working for me, I have to query it twice to get the results. Maybe this is happening for selected ip addresses. This doesn't happen when I use a VPN.

The founder of DDG was also the founder of a privacy invading company. This has been scrubbed off most parts of the internet.

Edit: changed from spyware to privacy invading

Overall I agree with much of the tone that they set and some of the things are long overdue.

Edit2: Changed from "sometimes" to "when you search for the first time" in response to the comment below.

absolutelyrad··on Cryptocurrency company Ripple says SEC lawsuit is imminent
> but it will signal that the US is diehard anti-crypto.

From the article: SEC officials have declared Bitcoin and Ether to be currencies, as they are decentralized in their management, but have left the door open for others to qualify as securities, especially at the time of their issuance.

So not really. The US needs to evolve to the new world.

> The limitations of what can be done without the iOS/Android APIs are too high to make the app useful, as can be seen in the official documentation: https://github.com/corona-warn-app/cwa-documentation/blob/ma...

This is the core reason I'm so against these duopolies. I have a startup idea that I want to implement. I've done it on windows, and it's flawless. Should work on macOS too. But these mobile OS's don't provide the right API's to do it. Android offers access to do it in a half assed way, and the way to do it right is to do it the correct way, flawlessly. So I'm stuck in a limbo, I want to be the first and last to market, prepared for when these companies break up, the OS offers access to some API's I want, and capture the market. There may be little network effects to the idea. But it's going to be a big market for everyone, with plenty of competition if idiots offer the right API's. [edited it gave away a bit too revealing info]. Enough that I don't ever connect my development machine to the internet to make sure no source code ever leaves.

My test users have asked me when will I offer a mobile app? The app needs mobile integration to make it work the way the idea was supposed to be. All OS's that the user uses, together.

And, I have no response to their questions and the mails end up collecting dust.

These fuckers ruin innovation for everyone and it makes me mad.

If these companies don't get broken up with a competitive mobile OS landscape again, don't get mad when I jump ship and go with some OS Huawei makes if it offers the right way and gains adoption.

If America wants competitiveness, innovation and a technological lead, it has work to do at home: Trust busting needs to happen fast.

absolutelyrad··on California plan for wealth tax on anyone who spends 60 days a year in the state
> "equality of opportunity" for future generations.

What a bullshit idea. Different people start with different advantages in life. Some with wealth, some with looks, some with none. In your bid to make an equal society, will you throw acid on attractive people so they become less attractive?

Attractive people, men and women have a significantly higher advantage in life, maybe call it an asset. Looks are an asset.

Wealth tax is a tax on your fucking assets. You gonna tax looks too?

If I consume less, I should pay less tax. A tax on wealth is a tax on hardwork and savings. People should be rewarded for spending wisely, not penalized.

Once you have a solution for other inherent advantages in life apart from money, and how to account for them, come back.

absolutelyrad··on Facebook: Free as in Bullshit
I consider Facebook, Google, Cloudflare, Amazon, Tencent, Tesla and Apple to be collaborators. Remember the anti-poaching agreement.

Especially Tencent, Google and Cloudflare, they do work together, and they hide it bad.

Several of Google and Tencent's moves have been anti-competitive, and they had a wink nudge.

And Google/Cloudflare, don't get me started lol. If investigators are serious, it is going to be fun.

But in seriousness, Google/Cloudflare is similar to Google/Facebook "collab", and it'll be bad when it comes out. But Cloudflare will be a trillion dollar company by then.

absolutelyrad··on Tiananmen Square images that China does not want you to see
Indeed. If most others know, good for them I guess. I didn't know, so I mentioned for others. I'm not well versed in Chinese history.

And my impression wasn't wrong, most people would've thought that way too given the picture. Stop gaslighting.

absolutelyrad··on Tiananmen Square images that China does not want you to see
When an image gives the wrong first impression/is misleading, indeed they are.

When doing with good intent, they're not. Since the US and China are rivals at this point and neither side wants to chill, and given the history of troll farms by many countries to manipulate discourse, I'd be wary of discussion that contributes to a solution.

absolutelyrad··on Tiananmen Square images that China does not want you to see
When I first saw the images I thought the tanks killed him/ran over him. That's what the first impression was.

Then saw the video.

Anyways, HN is not the place for geopolitical talk like this. And I dislike the trend of polluting the place with geopolitical rivalries.

absolutelyrad··on Tiananmen Square images that China does not want you to see

absolutelyrad··on Firefox Was Always Enough
Chrome/Chromium/Edge has more features, does more things. Why would I use Firefox except for being stubborn?

I personally moved to Edge from Chrome after they forked Chromium because of better integration with Windows. I wouldn't have before, because it was lacking. Now with feature parity, the integration with Windows has a value.

Chromium can be configured for all of the privacy things Firefox has. There is no inherent other difference. Normal people will always value utility over privacy.

Mozilla can chose to fork Chromium, and come ahead. Chromium/Blink was a fork of WebKit. They made it better. Mozilla can chose a better starting point with Chromium.

I still remember moving from Internet Explorer to Firefox to Chrome now to Edge.

I was blown away by Chrome when it came out. It was just better. Way better.

> Common Crawl

Not even close. I've used Common Crawl, it has nowhere near the breadth that Google has in their index.

Problem no. 1 is that website owners block non Google crawlers because of limited bandwidth. So you can't reliably even get started on creating your own search engine. Once we have the data available, we can figure out the other bits and what they require. But to get to that door, you need access to the crawl.

You don't need to have everything in the Google index to beat Google.

You need to be better than Google in the search niche that you'll serve.

And for that, at the bare minimum, you need access to all the crawl data that Google has to get started, then throw away the bits that you don't need.

absolutelyrad··on EU to unveil landmark law curbing power of tech giants
I'd wait and watch. Cryptocurrencies are rising, and PornHub is going all in on crypto now that they've been cut off from VISA and MasterCard.

They might be the ones who finally push it for mainstream adoption, then PayPal can go kick rocks.

If it fails, then maaaybe we could think about it. Still not as bad as these 4 major offenders.

absolutelyrad··on EU to unveil landmark law curbing power of tech giants
I don't think it's a problem. Developers that develop for Windows collectively make far more money than Microsoft does. Windows is a platform and Microsoft does a good job of being a platform.

While Microsoft bundles, it's not problematic like Google or Apple. Their way of doing things is different.

The problem with the smart phone world is that apps are distributed through stores not websites. There isn't any worthy exclusive Windows Store app I can find. Every useful software is available from the websites.

In the smart phone world, as a device manufacturer you have to get Google's blessings. They control the play store. And as a device manufacturer, no play store = no sales.

The app store parasite model needs to end. I get no viruses in years, and I download software from websites all the time on Windows 10.

absolutelyrad··on EU to unveil landmark law curbing power of tech giants
List of companies that I'd like to be investigated for corruption and anti trust abuses:

1. Alphabet/Google

2. Apple

3. Facebook

4. Match Group

Match group is lucky they're not getting much attention, but they own all major dating apps. They need a bit of smacking.

Reasons:

For Google, the biggest problem is their bundling of Chrome, YouTube, Gmail if you want to have Google certified android phone that has the Google play store. Google should be prevented from having their own WWW crawler too. The crawler should be made into it's own company and data should be purchased by Google and any other company that want to purchase it at the same costs.

For Apple, it's their app store. The app store needs to be eliminated. Apple has a problem with not allowing competing browser engines on iOS and misleading people by saying it's for privacy reason. Eliminating the control of the App store from Apple is going to fix the problem.

For Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp should be spun off to their own entities.

For Match group, break off tinder into a separate company. And prevent any future dating app accusations by Match group or Tinder. NO MERGERS.

---

From the Chinese side:

I'd like to see Alibaba group and Tencent being investigated.

Edit: replying to calls below for travel industry.

The travel industry is already competitive enough, and the situation in these areas should be reviewed after a year or two.

For now, these are the critical problems for tech. Their control is taking the breath away from smaller companies and reducing innovation.

absolutelyrad··on Google is getting left behind due to horrible UI/UX
I'd add that material UI is one of the worst things to come out of Google, and their implementation in GCP, Gmail etc. I absolutely hate it, and it looks cheap. Even Windows 10 interface looks better.

Even though Material UI is functional, there is something off about it. Something is weird about it, and I can't tell what. Maybe there's a word for it. It feels/looks cheap, like designed for the lowest common denominator device. Like... at least add a backdrop filter/blur to it, it gives a different feeling. The current flat design feels dead and soul less.

The only place where material UI is suitable is Google search. Not Gmail, not GCP and DEFINATELY NOT on stock android.
