abricot··on Public Safety Announcement: The 2020 Election Is Not Over
Well then. All of those honking cars are part of the political process that will make him win.
abricot··on Public Safety Announcement: The 2020 Election Is Not Over
How would it be mathematically possible for him to lose?
abricot··on 750M genetically modified mosquitoes to be released in Florida
How exactly would they inherit the genes if it causes sterility?
abricot··on [dead]
I've tried and failed that too. My conclusion is that they have enough voices on the site to keep it alive so they're not letting in any more people from outside that bubble on purpose.
abricot··on Why I link to Wayback Machine instead of original web content
The "SingleFile" plugin is a better version of ctrl+s. It will save all pages as single html file and even include images as an octet stream in the file so they aren't missed.
abricot··on Why professors are writing crap that nobody reads
> Academics are typically publishing research they think will push their fields forward some day or illuminate something as of yet misunderstood.

Is that the dream or is it the reality?

I think I've heard plenty of anecdotes to the contrary (or is it simply the self-derogatory way scholars talk amongst themselves)

abricot··on Google Is Not God of the Web
I like my recommendations not coming from my subscriptions. I check my subscriptions for new stuff often, so I want the recommendations to be other stuff.

But you're right, they outright sucks. They are definitely dynamic because I only have to show my son a single Roblox video to change it, but at the same times there are stuff that is repeatedly showing up that I have no interest in. Even stuff that I've told YouTube that I'm in no way interested in...

What I REALLY miss is a random category - for stuff that I would never otherwise see.

abricot··on Choose Email for Remote Productivity
I'm all for using email productively. As soon as I'm done sorting out the automated and mass mailed stuff and read through these emails that contain important information but has been forwarded 16 times before being sent to me.
abricot··on A happy ending for Seattle’s Bop Street Records: a nonprofit buys the collection
They keep a lot of stuff that is currently unavailable to the public. Maybe one day it will be out of copyright and then they can publish it quickly.

In the mean time at least it is not lost.

abricot··on Show HN: Yubikey-agent – an easy to use Go ssh-agent for YubiKeys
Is it considered good practice to create the key on the yubi and not have a backup? Or alternatively a master key to sign the key on the yubi so you can create a new subkey if you lose the yubi?
abricot··on Initial Impressions of WSL 2
They resurged because windows laptops was straight trash and wireless worked like shit. Apple only needed to do a few things better back then.
abricot··on WinUI – The modern native UI platform of Windows
I hope they never get around to changing the Event Viewer or Disk Management. I know they are far from perfect, but can you imagine it getting the same treatment as the Task Manager?
abricot··on WinUI – The modern native UI platform of Windows
This is especially annoying on a slower computer that takes time to activate the individual controls. I would rather set them all and then have the PC take a moment to ready.
abricot··on Five methods for Filtering data with multiple conditions in Python
I do the same without the parenthesis.
abricot··on The Linux codebase has over 3k TODO comments, many from over a decade ago
Do you then keep the branch around forever?
abricot··on Self-driving truck delivers butter from California to Pennsylvania in three days
Maybe technology could help us all buying more locally sourced butter? :)
abricot··on Category:Obsolete occupations
I'm thinking that drones would be a more obvious solution, as they can knock on windows even in high-rises. Maybe even with bright lights for deaf customers?
abricot··on Ask HN: Why are my Amazon order emails so devoid of useful information?
They want you to log in to the site every time you need any info.

An algorithm has probably told them that you would be 0.0047% more likely to order something again.

..alternatively it's so that the order process is slightly more secure as the email is not secure communication.

abricot··on Domes are overrated
I think the point is, if you need to tie it down anyway, why limit yourself to the dome shape.
abricot··on Immediate brain plasticity after one hour of brain–computer interface
So.. is "plasticity" a good or bad thing?
abricot··on High-skilled workers in small towns are a ‘waste of resources,’ says study
They had me until they included "managers" in their list...
abricot··on Thank You, Guido
I can only agree. Me and a colleague are the only ones using Python for HR (HRIS) that we know of, but people are very interested when we tell them how we use it for data quality, automation and reporting. There will surely be more in the future.
abricot··on Ask HN: Options for downloading a small (5mb) CSV file from FTP & emailing it?
You can make a script that will send it using your coworkers Outlook.
abricot··on Congressional Ignorance Leaves the U.S. Vulnerable to Cyberthreats
The people in charge aren't uncomfortable with the system that put them in charge. Colour me surprised.
abricot··on Goodbye, shitty Car extends Vehicle object-orientation tutorial (2011)
I think this is why you often see people reinvent GOTO. Everyone who started with BASIC (and moved on) knows why you won't do that any more. But someone today starting with python might not understand. [replace GOTO with any bad example]
abricot··on Subscription services for plants
I hope you got full custody.
abricot··on How to fuck up software releases
How do you use git without push and pull?
abricot··on Ask HN: What Happened to GitHub's Atom?
Vim key combinations are awful for many non-US keyboard layouts. Many combinations can't even be done (you can't hold down shift twice for examble)
abricot··on Keyhut POS: Free Point-of-Sale Software for DOS
This sounds interresting. Do you know any guides on this?
abricot··on Excel Alternatives
This is just a clickbaity top 10. And not even one of the better ones.
