He mentions RethinkDB as an in-memory DB, but..it's not.

abjorn··on Kotlin: Statically typed programming language targeting the JVM and JS
So what? I don't know about you, but I started programming for fun. Where's the fun if you never experiment or try new things?

You can't discourage people from experimenting with new languages, frameworks, design patterns, etcetera, just because some people might use it and fail.

abjorn··on Suicidal Software Developer
No, it's pretty appropriate in this situation. Don't be an ass.
abjorn··on Google Drive is down (502. That’s an error.)
No, I just think that you'd be a fool to have ever believed any promise that the cloud would eliminate downtime. Even if from a technical perspective that were true, there's still the possibility of human error.
abjorn··on Google Drive is down (502. That’s an error.)
Downtime happens, cloud or not. For the moment, it's just a fact of computing.
abjorn··on We are throttling the FCC to dialup modem speeds until they pay us for bandwidth
If the right wing pundits were paying attention at all to net neutrality I'm sure they would be all over it. Instead they're more concerned with what people buy with food stamps.
abjorn··on ECMAScript 6 support in Mozilla
Well, historically Mozilla has been the main driving force behind JavaScript's development so that isn't too surprising. Who knows how Eich's departure will affect that, though.
abjorn··on ECMAScript 6 support in Mozilla
There are some very interesting things you can do with generators in regards to asynchronous flow control. Personally I'm in favor of the Promises, however. Unfortunately some current implementations are broken in terms of error handling. Chrome just swallows exceptions that happen in Promises, in a lot of cases.
abjorn··on Ask HN: Examples of tech worker cooperatives?
There is Web Hosting Coop that some friends and former coworkers of mine run: http://www.webhosting.coop/
abjorn··on Ada Initiative No Longer Partnering with GitHub
There's a whole lot more clarity in the actions of the NSA than there are with this situation. There isn't a single amount of proof that's been given to anyone outside of GitHub of the investigation that can say one way or the other who is in the wrong. It's a bunch of he said, she said.

abjorn··on Wu-Tang Clan Offered $5M for New Album Only Available as One Copy
I was under the impression that most people agree that music is art. Maybe some of it is bad art, but art none the less.

The idea that there can only be one that has to be toured around to be experienced in order for it to be art is just ridiculous. I'm a fan of Wu-Tang but this is just a gimmick on their part.

abjorn··on Minecraft creator says he’s canceled talks for Oculus Rift version
I think the idea is that Oculus VR is already in this position, they just don't have the monetary resources that Facebook does.
abjorn··on The Sound of Sorting – "Audibilization" and Visualization of Algorithms (2013)

abjorn··on You can finally play SimCity offline
Too late, and besides I'd rather play SimCity 2000.
abjorn··on Show HN: My new JavaScript MVC framework
Well, there is such a tool, actually. http://lhorie.github.io/mithril/tools/template-converter.htm...

But while me and my coworker have been trying it out there seem to be quite a few bugs with it, and I'd much rather have it done at runtime (precompiled for production build) then have to translate it from my HTML-based template every time I make a change.

abjorn··on Show HN: My new JavaScript MVC framework
Normally I'd agree, but I think this has compelling enough reason to be on it's own. The lightweight nature means it's only real competition is Backbone, which is more of a library for making a framework than a framework itself. But Mithril seems to do more while still managing to have a much lighter footprint and feel more like "just JavaScript".
abjorn··on Show HN: My new JavaScript MVC framework
Overall I like it, except for the templates.

It's perfectly possible to not have FOUC with traditional template languages like mustache, and I don't think having "turing completeness" in your templates is a good thing. Frameworks like Ember.js have also shown that you don't need to manually write bindings to handle when your models change.

That being said, I do see the advantage gained with the virtual DOM you generate from the templates. I'd be interested to see if it was possible to integrate other templating languages in via plugin.

abjorn··on How the NSA Plans to Infect “Millions” of Computers with Malware
>"The sensors, codenamed TURMOIL, operate as a sort of high-tech surveillance dragnet, monitoring packets of data as they are sent across the Internet."

"TURMOIL", really? Honestly, is this just an elaborate setup for a new bond film or something, this is getting ridiculous.

abjorn··on Richard Stallman – Free Software Song Lyrics
Yes.
abjorn··on Spotify – security team response time
It's likely that it was fixed sooner than that. I would bet they gave it 7 days before he could talk about it, so they could audit the rest of their site.
abjorn··on Texas Appeals Court Rules Phone Search After Arrest Violates 4th Amendment [pdf]
Oh boy, the last time I saw an official state of Texas site give a 500 error it stayed that way for a month...
abjorn··on Wolfram Language
It's not as if they started as a "family" of languages, each one of those was just one discrete language at one point.
abjorn··on Anyone Who Still Thinks IPv6 Won't Happen Isn't Watching the Measurements
So am I right in understanding that this is measuring something different from the aforementioned Google statistics? On Google's page it seems to be measuring actual IPv6 traffic, whereas worldipv6launch.org is measuring availability in networks if I'm reading this correctly.
