abirch··on Court agrees with EFF: Utah's VPN law demands a technical impossibility
What stops me from using DraftKings.com from a VPN? I'm at the page right now, but I don't have an account. Will they verify that my IP and home address match or something?
abirch··on Court agrees with EFF: Utah's VPN law demands a technical impossibility
they want to stop VPN traffic. If it's a plain IP address it's easy. VPN makes it hard.
abirch··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
Unfortunately most of the Chinese models are open weights and not open sourced.

Pedantic but it's vira or viruses https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virus#Etymology

abirch··on ChatGPT Pro 500
If you don't pay for the product, you are the product. It's like gmail is free, but Google is harvesting all of my data to sell me ads. Meta is doing the same with Muse.
abirch··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops

abirch··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
Sports practice was almost always after school and we would walk/bike by ourselves even in elementary school. All nights were free except for scouting. My kids have practice until 8PM on multiple nights and not centralized where they could walk alone to get there.

In addition for me, when I grew up we had family around. Currently my closest family member is ~600 miles away so they can't pop in to watch the kids.

abirch··on Dots: Always-on agents
Meta is probably making money off of Muse. They can sell ads with the information that they glean.
abirch··on DraftKings is using AI to behaviorally target chronic gamblers
Imagine having a gambling addiction and trying to watch sports! I swear every third commercial is for gambling.
abirch··on Google ending ChromeOS support two years early
It seems myopic especially if Gemini is supposed to reduce labor costs with software development. 2034-36 would only be security updates.

It’s frustrating when people use civilians as pawns.

abirch··on Platform-independent SIMD in Go
Yes: https://www.mathworks.com/help/fixedpoint/ref/half.fma.html

I'm grateful that Go a non-proprietary language offers these features.

abirch··on Platform-independent SIMD in Go
Vectorizing computations has been Matlabs secret sauce.
abirch··on Tokens too cheap to meter
Too Cheap to Meter reminds me of the promise of Nuclear Power in 1954

"It is not too much to expect that our children will enjoy in their homes electrical energy too cheap to meter,..." Lewis Strauss

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Too_cheap_to_meter#Origins

Oddly enough my power bill was metered and big.

abirch··on GPT-6 Sol and Luna
works great until they raise prices.
abirch··on Launch HN: Coverage Cat (YC S22) – Umbrella insurance via your personal agent
Do you take into account the Berkshire Hathaway shareholder discount for GEICO, Home, and Umbrella insurance?

Edit: I edited this for clarity.

abirch··on AI Has No Wisdom and Neither Will You
In my experience, the most difficult part of a software project is getting the specifications correct. To abuse Harold Abelson famously quote: "Programs must be written for people to read, and only incidentally for machines to execute."

"A Project must have proper tests and specs, and only incidentally for a working program that executes"

abirch··on Meta bans ads for Virginia Woolf play in Spain
Maybe they should be forced to advertise "Careless People"

What I love about DRY is you have to repeat yourself by explaining DRY means "Don't repeat yourself"
abirch··on Disney+: New user agreement allows ads before movies in all subscriptions
It sucks that Disney+ cancelled Bobba Fett and other great Star Wars series. One month at a time makes sense especially with the lack of new content that I want.

If people are trading bitcoin on margin or if Strategy is forced to sell a large percentage of its holdings.
abirch··on Neovim have a ~$800k Bitcoin donation sitting untouched since 2023
Bitcoin's supposed to be "liquid" but I'm wondering what happens when there's a forced liquidity event.

Like this scene from Pirates of Silicon Valley between Bill Gates and Steve Jobs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBri-xgYvHQ Bill was saying that Steve was stealing from Xerox so it's okay if Bill stole from Xerox first.
abirch··on America's Driver's License Breach Is a National Security Disaster
What I would love to know is who is selling my info. I get texts from all kinds of politicians but I didn't know who sold them my number. Seems like selling someone's property without their approval should be illegal. It'd be great if I could request who sold them my data, then go to that entity tell them to stop selling (rinse and repeat)
abirch··on CSS-Tricks in Limbo
Oddly enough if the scraping is good, AI can find the CSS tricks in the wild. Not as applicable with other technologies but scrapable web is readable for AI much like how some of us old people learned html/css by looking at source of quality websites.
abirch··on Leaving Linux
I use Claude and Gemini to customize things for me all the time. If something doesn't work the way that I want it, I let AI fix it (I do back up and maintain scripts to revert back to its current stage).
