abc-xyz··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
The allies, just like Biden, have no interest in standing up to China. Tariffs definitely work, because if they’re high enough then companies will be forced to leave to setup shop elsewhere (such as Vietnam).

You can also see that China’s GDP growth (in 2019) was the lowest it’s been since 1990 (2020 will no doubt be much lower), and their reputation around the world is at an all-time low.

It’s also worth noting that the administration did a lot more to stand up to China besides tariffs (but tariffs that force companies to leave will of course hurt them the most).

abc-xyz··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
Sometimes it’s necessary to make sacrifices to try to stop an evil regime. This is one of those times, and besides war then there’s no other solution besides trying to isolate China from the rest of the world and hurt their economy. Trump went a long way towards achieving that goal.

It would of course be ideal if EU and all democratic countries got together, but they (just like Biden) unfortunately have no interest in doing so. Biden believe that it’s USA’s self-interest to see China prosper.

abc-xyz··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
He probably received a lot of votes from liberals like myself who see China as the greatest threat the world is facing today, and were thus forced to vote against our interests (since Biden has a history of being pro-China and even said he would end Trump’s China tariffs during the campaign).

abc-xyz··on Apple building search engine to take on Google, report claims
What value does DDG bring to Apple? Its user-base is insignificant (Apple will instantly have a larger user-base the moment they set it as the default in Safari). The branding is terrible, especially for Apple. There’s also nothing special about their tech since it’s just a Bing API wrapper. What’s in it for Apple?
abc-xyz··on Apple building search engine to take on Google, report claims
Why DDG considering they’re for-profit, closed-source and basically just a Bing wrapper with little transparency?

Seems like it would make more sense for Apple to build their own Bing wrapper, team up with Microsoft, or build their own search engine from scratch.

abc-xyz··on The New York Times' first article about Hitler's rise is stunning
The time the article was written, and the purpose for which it was written, is irrelevant. What’s relevant is the fact that it’s now being used to not-so-subtly attack Trump.

Maybe it’s a coincidence, or based on keywords in the article, or perhaps an editor carefully picked this specific video to prominently display below the article. Guess we’ll never know.

But it is quite telling that an article about Hitler/concentration camps focus on Trump rather than Xi Jinping/Xinjiang.

abc-xyz··on Jack Ma's Ant Group set for record $34B market debut
The history repeating itself is the world’s inability and unwillingness to make sacrifices to stop China, similar to what we saw with Nazi Germany.

Also worth noting that all the Chinese companies that operate popular browsers (Tencent, Alibaba, Xiaomi, and Qihoo 360, etc.) ended up censoring that specific GitHub page because they didn't like it (https://www.theverge.com/2019/4/3/18294030/tencent-xiaomi-ch...).

And the way they did it was so shady. They basically revealed to the world that they are able and willing to replace the content on any website and as a user then you'll have no idea if they did it or not (for instance, one of the browsers made the repo visible but prevented people from starring the repo). CCP could easily order all these browsers (which come pre-installed with their cheap phones) to rewrite the content on any website. Imagine them rewriting the content of Wikipedia articles, Twitter posts, Google search results, hijacking download links to download software bundled with spyware (e.g. if you were to download Chrome), etc.

If they're willing to engage in such shady behaviour and break all users' trust just because they didn't like a repo complaining about long work hours, then imagine what they would do with all your financial transactions. My god. The fact that we're allowing these companies into our markets truly saddens me.

Not sure why you say “even iPhones” as this kind of high-end tech is likely among the most difficult to manufacture outside of China. But even iPhones are starting to get manufactured in India, and you also have other smartphones being manufactured in Vietnam (I believe this include the new Pixel).

Trump’s China tariffs have already forced many companies to move to Vietnam/India/Mexico/etc. The few remaining are likely hoping Biden will win since he said he would end Trump’s China tariffs.

abc-xyz··on I am an Uighur who faced China’s concentration camps
Biden has been pro-China throughout the entirety of his political career.

As Senator he voted yes to give China permanent normal trade status, stating:

> [Our course is clear. China's growing participation in the international community over the past quarter century has been marked by growing adherence to international norms in the areas of trade, security, and human rights.](https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/CRECB-2000-pt13/html/CRE... of our colleagues disagree on this point. They would have preferred that the China trade bill be turned into an omnibus China Policy Act. I understand their objectives and their frustration with the slow pace of reform in China. But amendments offered by Senator Smith of New Hampshire--covering such diverse issues as POW/MIA cooperation, forced labor, organ harvesting, etc.--and Senator Wellstone of Minnesota--conditioning PNTR on substantial progress toward the release of all political prisoners in China--pile too much onto this legislation. Moreover, those amendments would effectively hold the trade legislation hostage to changes in China which passing the trade bill would promote. This seems backwards to me.](https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/CRECB-2000-pt13/html/CRE...)

Biden later lobbied to grant most-favored-nation trade status and World Trade Organization membership to China:

> [In the critical fight over whether to grant most-favored-nation trade status and World Trade Organization membership to China in the 1990s — a fight in which, again, many of his party’s leaders in Congress were on the right side — Biden carefully shepherded China through the process from his powerful perch as the senior Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. You don’t need to boycott 100% to be effective. Boycotting 80%, or even 10%, is surely better than doing nothing.

I’d also say it’s surprisingly easy to boycott Chinese goods, as well as companies kowtowing to China.

abc-xyz··on I am an Uighur who faced China’s concentration camps
Here’s an incomplete list of things Trump has done to stand up to China. I challenge everyone to name a single person (or country, or continent) who’s done more than him.

- He refers to the Wuhan Virus as the China/Chinese Virus (CCP is trying very hard from distancing themselves from responsibility; they won’t even let us into Wuhan to investigate).

- He started a trade war with China, which has forced companies to move their manufacturing to Vietnam, India, Mexico, Taiwan, etc. (Biden admittedly said he would end Trump’s China tariffs, but the many companies that already left are unlikely to return), and even high end tech such as the iPhone is starting to get assembled outside China as well.

- He was the first US President to speak directly with Taiwan's President since 1979.

- He made the largest arms sale to Taiwan in the past few decades.

- The Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act and the Hong Kong Autonomy Act were signed under his administration.

- The TAIPEI Act was signed under his administration.

- The Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act was singed under his administration.

- Meng Wanzhou was arrested under his administration (which dragged Canada into it because China decided to arbitrarily arrest Canadian citizens).

- China Mobile was blocked from offering services in the US, citing national security risks.

- Huawei was blocked from using Android and chips with US tech (which will effectively kill their mobiles once their stock runs out).

- Huawei was blocked from building 5G networks (USA paid other nations to block them as well).

- Hong Kong’s special status was revoked.

- Universal Postal Union agreed to let countries raise postal rates after Trump threatened to leave - this means you’ll no longer be able to buy cheap junk from Aliexpress (and resellers like Wish) at no shipping cost (the receiving country was previously forced to deliver the products for free, even if you brought some toy for 10 cents).

- Trump is pushing for WTO to drop China’s developing country status.

- TikTok and WeChat (likely with more to come) would’ve been blocked by now if it wasn’t for judges temporarily blocking the bans.

There's a reason China's GDP growth in 2019 was the lowest it's been since 1990, and there's a reason China's worldwide reputation is at an all-time low. That reason is Trump. It's also no surprise that all the nations that suffer the most from CCP's actions, such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam, etc. tend to be pro-Trump.

abc-xyz··on The persecution of the Uyghurs is a crime against humanity
What exactly did Biden do to stand up to China during the Obama/Biden administration (or throughout his political career)? Here’s an incomplete list of things Trump has done:

- He refers to the Wuhan Virus as the China/Chinese Virus (CCP is trying very hard from distancing themselves from responsibility; they won’t even let us into Wuhan to investigate).

- He started a trade war with China, which has forced companies to move their manufacturing to Vietnam, India, Mexico, Taiwan, etc. (Biden admittedly said he would end Trump’s China tariffs, but the many companies that already left are unlikely to return), and even high end tech such as the iPhone is starting to get assembled outside China as well.

China’s GDP growth in 2019 was also the lowest it’s been since 1990, and 2020 will be even lower. And China’s reputation around the world is at an all-time low (because all over the world then everyone is discussing everything Trump says, and he often attack China).

Also, China’s behavior is nothing new. The only thing that’s new is the fact that we finally have a president that for whatever reasons decided to turn them into his enemy. If EU and the rest of the world had any interest in standing up to China then they could implement their own tariffs, give 5G contracts to their own nation’s companies, etc. But they, just like the Obama/Biden administration, have no interest in doing so.

abc-xyz··on Trump administration announces overhaul of H1B visa program requiring higher pay
How’s it ineffective? The previous administration spent 8 years coming up with a terrible agreement that all candidates wanted to quit. Meanwhile the high tariffs have forced companies to leave, and sure, Biden has said that he’d end Trump’s China tariffs, but at least the many companies that have already setup shop elsewhere are unlikely to return.

For years countries have also been forced to waste taxpayer money to deliver cheap junk from Aliexpress/Wish/etc. because Universal Postal Union wouldn’t allow countries to increase postal rates from China. The previous administration was unable to do anything about it, but Trump succeeded where they failed.

Huawei has also been significantly hurt. Being banned from using Android and chips with US tech has effectively destroyed their mobile products (as their stock runs out), and countries are abandoning their 5G deals (either as a result of USA paying them to drop Huawei, or simply because China/Huawei’s reputation has dropped so much in the last four years). Trump also dragged other countries into it by e.g. requesting Meng Wanzhou’s arrest, which resulted in China arbitrarily arresting Canadian citizens.

He’s also the first US President to speak directly with Taiwan’s President since 1979, and has made the largest arms sale to Taiwan in the past few decades.

TAIPEI Act and Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act was signed under his administration, and Hong Kong lost its special status.

If judges hadn’t temporarily stopped Trump’s executive orders then TikTok and WeChat would also be banned now (it’s absurd that the west for decades have put up with China blocking western companies from their markets while freely allowing them into our markets).. hopefully the bans will go through, and hopefully TikTok/WeChat will just be the first of many.

Trump is also one of the few world leaders who continuously remind the world that China are responsible for the pandemic, and China still won’t allow WHO/others to investigate the origins in Wuhan.

Trump has also been pushing for China to lose WTO developing country status, which will surely happen if he’s re-elected.

As a liberal I disagree with most of Trump’s policies, but I could really go on-and-on about his effective/positive actions towards China.. you could make a solid case that Trump in four years has done more to stand up to China than the rest of the western world combined (including the previous administration) has done in the past decade.

abc-xyz··on Modi government to set up app store alternative to Google Play, Apple App Store
Have you tried publishing apps for the App/Play Store? Last time I made a game with Unity then I had to export it to different platforms and for some of them, such as iOS, then I had to make additional code modifications with xcode to get e.g. ads to work properly. I’d easily end up spending a day on making sure each store listing looked good (required files in different formats, and tons of settings to setup).

I also struggle to think of a scenario in which you wouldn’t want your app published on all app stores (unless you for moral reasons wouldn’t want your app on Chinese-owned stores or something like that).

But they cannot buy the same data - the quantity and quality of the data they obtain themselves (through apps like TikTok and WeChat that are running in the background 24/7 while collecting any information possible, such as secretly copying your clipboard which is likely to reveal passwords and other sensitive information) is far higher than what they could pay for.

You’re also ignoring the fact that they can use their apps to easily spread propaganda and influence elections. They’ve already censored videos that criticized the Chinese government. And inside the app then they have a very prominent “Covid-19” button where they can cherrypick what information to display.. they’ve for instance chosen to omit the fact that the Wuhan Virus originated in China.

abc-xyz··on Judge temporarily blocks U.S. ban on TikTok downloads from U.S. app stores
Why not? It’s basically the only app China have managed to make popular in USA. And they’ve had to blow billions on ads to do so.

I do believe it would be best to block all apps owned by the Chinese, but blocking them one by one would work as well, because it’s incredibly difficult and expensive to obtain the userbase that makes the app worth blocking.

No it isn’t. iOS have had malware problems as well as a result of people jailbreaking their device to install software from third-parties. Apple fortunately makes it increasingly difficult to jailbreak it.

We can also see that Apple were unable to protect their OSX devices as a result of allowing third-party app installations.
