ab8··on Intermittent fasting from dawn to sunset induces anticancer response
The more you are used to eating in an average meal, the longer it takes to feel "full".
ab8··on Mozilla Lifeboat
I second that. Great job!
ab8··on The first modern-day marine fish has officially gone extinct
The loss of this species may seem insignificant, especially since it hasn’t been seen for about 200 years, but it’s a noteworthy event: the smooth handfish is actually the first marine, bony fish to go extinct in modern times.
ab8··on Tech sector job interviews assess anxiety, not software skills: study
I don’t understand what is wrong with hiring someone the interviewer likes. I can see there may be racism, misogyny etc at play here. But setting that aside for a second, if people like each other, all other problems can be solved much more easily.
ab8··on Int. students may need to leave US if classes are 100% Remote
There are easier ways to buy a citizenship
ab8··on Using React, Redux and SSR to acommodate users without JavaScript
How does this compare with Microsoft's Blazor?

It’s another opportunity to rewrite orphaned services
ab8··on Build Software from Front-to-Back
Agreed. Unless it is a pet project for no one but yourself, the biggest challenge is figuring out what the problem is and arriving at a solution that works for the user.

Since neither the user nor the programmer knows the right answer, we have to work iterations in. Each iteration is followed by feedback. Given how often we end up being completely wrong, it is best to get to the first feedback as quickly as possible.

ab8··on If nearly all Airbnb reviews are positive, does that make them meaningless?
AirBnB takes down negative reviews. I had a poor experience and wrote about my experience. When I asked for a refund, a small percentage was refunded by the host. AirBnB immediately took down my review and then refused to communicate.
ab8··on The Octopus: An Alien Among Us
How is the author sure that humans are conscious? If he is going by his own personal experience, then he can be sure only of his own consciousness.
ab8··on I’m not saving ninety percent of my income for myself
She comes from a poor background. Now she is no longer poor, but pretends to be.
ab8··on I’m not saving ninety percent of my income for myself
You would be surprised how many people care deeply about this. And they can tell a lot about the purses and their owners. Those that care put in a lot of time to research them - like some people do cars.
ab8··on Waterfox Browser
I suppose the difference is that in Firefox you have to opt out of it, and in Waterfox you opt in (?). The default makes a difference, since most users don't know about it.
ab8··on Ten Rivers Contribute Most of the Plastic in the Oceans (2018)
Every meal eaten at most lunch restaurants generates a bunch of plastic that sticks around for a thousand years.

Other animals live on this planet too. Is it fair for us to refuse to make even a small change but expect land and sea animals to deal with our plastic waste?

The landfill solution is another way of saying "put it somewhere I can't see." Would we like plastic storms around own our homes?

ab8··on Unexpected Surge in Global Methane Levels
> there is no way that the entire global population is going to stop eating animals

Hard problems always feel this way. <insert slavery reference>

1. No way to stop eating animals 2. No way to stop driving/flying 3. Don't ask me to change. YOU change.

=> no change in status quo

ab8··on Unexpected Surge in Global Methane Levels
> changing the diet of animals

Changing our own diet is on the table too... considering we don't need to eat cattle to survive. This problem is one of overconsumption, and isn't going away by keeping our lifestyle the same.

ab8··on Ten Rivers Contribute Most of the Plastic in the Oceans (2018)
Only some ecologically responsible cities and states have done this. Everywhere else in the US it is a plastic party!
ab8··on Ten Rivers Contribute Most of the Plastic in the Oceans (2018)
Plastic use has to be curtailed at source. If developed countries with lower populations are using many times more plastic than developing countries with larger populations, it is time to look in the mirror.

It is not fair to allow some countries to make decisions based on economics but expect others to be ecologically responsible. Let's see how the US handles its own trash now, since China has stopped importing it.

ab8··on People Who Eat the Same Meal Every Day
There are meditation practices that focus on gratitude. "Loving kindness" is one such practice that is very accessible to a beginner. When in the right state of mind, this can be a powerful and moving experience.
ab8··on US plans to strip H1B immigrants' spouses of work permits
Employers are forced to determine average wage for the job description in the area and pay this as a minimum wage to prevent exploitation of foreign labor. This has always been the case. H1 employees are not being paid less than citizens.
ab8··on The jobs of the future are already here, and some are weird
Based on what I remember, $4M is what he earned in the year, not all FROM YouTube. Most of that money came from other deals. Of course those deals were possible because of his popularity on YouTube, but it is not a case of Google spreading wealth.
ab8··on Introduction to HTML Components
I am not sure it is not a coincidence that the same idea keeps resurfacing. I remember reading pretty early on that HTML/XML/XHTML would eventually lead to a world where "chemists would have their own tags to represent chemical formulas" and similarly each discipline would develop their own tag language. Browsers would just know how to render them!

People have tried to materialize this idea in multiple ways over time - HTC, microformats, web components etc. It should not be surprising that the solutions are similar. This isn't to say the first implementation was the best, and the others have just forgotten history. I am sure there are some pretty senior web developers around who remember their history, and were even part of it. If anything we should be optimistic that the new implementations have learned from the mistakes of the past.
