aassddffasdf··on Joining Apple Computer (2018)
He probably meant Berkeley.
aassddffasdf··on Meta does a U-turn, will share its technology with Five Eyes members
Weapons are good actually.
aassddffasdf··on Hazel: A live functional programming environment featuring typed holes
Elm/ML is an interesting choice of mis-mash & a subtle slap in the face of Haskell? (Which on the surface is far more like Elm than ML is).
aassddffasdf··on Show HN: LLMs can generate valid JSON 100% of the time
You would still have to ensure balancing somehow. Both "]" and "}" are valid "closing brackets" and the correct one to choose is context-dependent.
aassddffasdf··on ChatGPT Can't Kill Anything Worth Preserving
Clearly the way forward is to teach the students how to do:

"... the kind of tweaking you see me doing above, tweaking which I can do because I possess a relatively sophisticated understanding of narrative craft and know what to tell the AI to do"

This will likely entail teaching them how to do the job without the use of the AI (as was always the case). (The same applies to software development [which is just a different form of writing]).

aassddffasdf··on Spice.ai – Open-source, time series AI for developers
It's difficult yes. But for the right price, I can assist. Feel free to ping me.
aassddffasdf··on Spice.ai – Open-source, time series AI for developers
How about for people who know what they are doing with time series?
aassddffasdf··on Data notation in Clojure
Business don't know what they invest in. They hire a software professional to produce software. It's up to her to use the best techniques to do so.
aassddffasdf··on YouTube reinstates Right Wing Watch
The problem with this logic is that most definitely "popularity" is already proxied by some data that they are collecting and thus could be acted upon by the machines. So either Google are poor coders or this is something different than popularity.
aassddffasdf··on This Chemical Does Not Exist
Exactly.
aassddffasdf··on This Chemical Does Not Exist
Pretty bold title. Seems like it would be more "not known to exist."
aassddffasdf··on Zoom is now critical infrastructure – that’s a concern
Umm Slack can be used to coordinate a hop to another channel.
aassddffasdf··on Ethiopia has launched its first satellite into space
This should not be downvoted. filleduchaos is right. Get over yourselves nerds.
aassddffasdf··on GitHub Actions is my new favorite free programming tool [video]
That all comes down to how well-designed the API is. Not all APIs are created equal but in the hands of a skilled designer, this functionality is priceless. Not only that but you can also look at the actual values to tease apart any meanings that seem ambiguous (but, once again, in the hands of a good designer those won't exist in the first place).
aassddffasdf··on GitHub Actions is my new favorite free programming tool [video]
It's my point so what is your point?
aassddffasdf··on GitHub Actions is my new favorite free programming tool [video]
Umm, GraphQL is a reflective API-- use 'introspection': https://graphql.org/learn/introspection/
aassddffasdf··on Moxie: Incremental Declarative UI in Rust
Right. All this treating the DOM with kid gloves seems to be due to its pre-existing weaknesses. Why not just fix those?
aassddffasdf··on Facebook picked Rust to implement Libra
> Of course these are possible in Rust, but in practice I'vr found they're mucb rarer.

Apparently rarer than the occasional typo (the above sentence contains two).

aassddffasdf··on What a deepfake video of Mark Zuckerberg reveals about how we're manipulated
Regarding #1: not so with widely deployed cryptographic provenance. Also, AI can detect deep fakes and image manipulation.
aassddffasdf··on How much are professors paid?
Haha, right. I searched for "axis" to see if anyone was making this point before I re-made it.
aassddffasdf··on How much are professors paid?
Would be nice to have an actual y-axis on those charts. No way to tell the difference between near zero and zero for the various schools.
aassddffasdf··on Chelsea Manning sent back to jail after refusing to testify before a grand jury
> Since Assange has already been indicted, there isn’t much sense in collecting additional evidence from Manning.

This reasoning does not make sense. The bar for indictment is not "100% of all available evidence must have been collected". One can and should collect (and subsequently present) additional evidence until the closing arguments are presented. No case is ever a "sure thing". One is wise to continue to reinforce it throughout the entire process.

aassddffasdf··on Chelsea Manning sent back to jail after refusing to testify before a grand jury
That's false. No one knows what she _would_ say until she actually says it. She can certainly say "I can't say the answer to that because it would incriminate me (in ways that I don't already have immunity for)" and no one would have any way to verify that claim. Thus, it's a perfect response for every question.
aassddffasdf··on Chelsea Manning sent back to jail after refusing to testify before a grand jury
That's false. 5th amendment certainly applies in that (and every other) case where one could incriminate themselves with their testimony.
aassddffasdf··on Chelsea Manning sent back to jail after refusing to testify before a grand jury
Seems like a practical alternative would be to simply "plead the 5th" in response to every question she is asked.
aassddffasdf··on Why the Flow of Time Is an Illusion
We are in a pocket of high order/ low entropy (not high entropy).
aassddffasdf··on How the Boeing 737 Max disaster looks to a software Developer
It means that the one thing you defined it to do was not the right thing.
aassddffasdf··on A Measles Case Hits Google's Silicon Valley Headquarters
In this climate, if I had an infant I'd consider quarantining him or her until old enough to get the vaccine.
aassddffasdf··on A Measles Case Hits Google's Silicon Valley Headquarters
So, what's the big deal here? The only people affected should be those who were too stupid to take the vaccine. The rest of us can rest easy and let Darwin do his work.
aassddffasdf··on Rust: Beyond the Typechecker
Yes, I know that. However, they don't need to be exhaustive. They are very effective at uncovering any bugs using a statistical approach at even very reasonable levels of iteration. And nothing precludes you from running them 24/7 in the cloud.

I wouldn't say using a "unit test" is ever really a viable option for me. Property-based tests subsume unit tests.
