aardvark291··on Equity guide for employees at fast-growing companies
> RSUs are taxed like income though, so from a tax perspective it’s pretty awful.

One approach is to accomplish the tax withholding by withholding some of the RSU grant at each vesting. This seems pretty reasonable, since you aren't out any cash to pay the taxes on an illiquid asset.

> You should always ask, and they should always tell you.

I'm currently on the job search. One of my offers was quite forthright and included the total number of outstanding shares and the fraction I would receive. But this seems very unusual.

The others all treated this information as proprietary/confidential. They either provide an opaque "valuation" of the equity, or give the current strike price ("fair market value" according to 409a) and preferred price (implied valuation after most recent funding round), and strongly imply that the spread here implies that the options are already significantly in-the-money.

Sometimes they just give the number of of options and their strike price.

You would definitely care about 200ms latency.

The Google Flights data is not "scraped." They interface directly to the airline reservations systems.

> The Brock Turner case, while horrendous, is not representative of how rapes are prosecuted or sentenced.

Indeed, my understanding is that rape is typically not prosecuted at all. :-/

Yes. Brock Turner got six months for rape.

aardvark291··on A Hidden Origin Story of the CBD Craze
» Unrelated to the brouhaha on the West Coast, tobacco farmers in Kentucky were seeking a new cash crop. In 2011, James Comer won the race for Kentucky state agriculture commissioner by promising to legalize industrial hemp.

“That raised a lot of eyebrows, including in McConnell’s office,” Eric Steenstra, a hemp lobbyist, told me. “They saw the winds were shifting.”

Along with Representative Jared Polis, now the governor of Colorado, Mr. McConnell included a hemp pilot program in the 2014 farm bill — for “research.” In the legislation, hemp was defined as cannabis containing less than 0.3 percent THC — an arbitrary threshold, not a scientific distinction: Nothing in the Farm Bill, in case law, or in the Controlled Substances Act seemed to say anything about CBD. So entrepreneurs interpreted this research-oriented pilot program as the de facto legalization of cannabidiol.

The Drug Enforcement Administration disagreed, but couldn’t stop the tidal wave of CBD production. In 2018, over 60 percent of the hemp crop in Kentucky was grown for CBD. Then, long after the country was already flooded with CBD products both dubious and legitimate, Mr. McConnell inserted language into the 2018 Farm Bill explicitly making hemp federally legal.«

aardvark291··on A Hidden Origin Story of the CBD Craze
TIL that CBD was kind of "invented" around 2011.

Yeah, and Italy, Spain, and France are some of the sunnier countries in Europe (compared to Germany, UK, Belgium, Scandinavia, etc). If anything I would expect vitamin D deficiency to be less common there.

aardvark291··on Write your own Excel in F# (2018)
I remember feeling this in regards to some early "rapid application development" software in the 90's (Visual Basic or Borland Delphi or something).

"Look how easy it is to make a text editor!" - Drag the "text editor component" over a blank form. Look how easy it is to make a web browser! - Drag the "web browser component".

Or, maybe it was in PHP, "As an example, here's code to format an integer as Roman numerals." Oh, that sounds interesting... Expecting a cool algorithm, then discover it's (for some reason) a standard library function.

The trick towards succcessful C++ development is to be very judicious in picking the features that you use. So not jumping to immediately using all the new features is a good sign.

I hope you mean x (multiplication) rather than ^ (exponentiation). If we're talking about fanout (each of 10 items of has 10 subitems, each of which has 10 subitems), multiplication is the relevant operation. And 10^(10^10) or (10^10)^10 is a hopelessly, uselessly, inconceivably large number. (Exponentiation is not associative; 3^(3^3)=3^9= 19683 while (3^3)^3=9^3=729.)
