aantix··on Why the Apple II Didn't Support Lowercase Letters (2020)
My first home computer was an Apple 2+. That was 1992 - so it was old and dated then, but my parents got it for $150, which was the right price range at the time for the family.

Luckily the guy selling included all sorts of manuals with it, which helped me to learn programming.

I remember a terminal program I used to connect to local BBSes - I would press the forward key and that would inverse the capital character display on the screen (white bg, black letter), denoting that a capital character was sent, not lower case.

aantix··on Dopamine signals when a fear can be forgotten
What do you prefer for focus?
aantix··on Dopamine signals when a fear can be forgotten
Nicotine.
aantix··on Waymo and Toyota outline partnership to advance autonomous driving deployment
They constantly highlight regressions.
aantix··on Waymo and Toyota outline partnership to advance autonomous driving deployment
If marketing is a 20 min video demonstrating both progress and regressions for each minor rev, then I’ll take more of that.
aantix··on Waymo and Toyota outline partnership to advance autonomous driving deployment
Except there’s FSD videos everywhere on X with every minor release, demonstrating the progress.
aantix··on Bamba: An open-source LLM that crosses a transformer with an SSM
Where's the code?
aantix··on AI helps unravel a cause of Alzheimer’s and identify a therapeutic candidate
>I don't think anyone is denying the humans did great work

The title cites the AI contribution, not the human

aantix··on An end to all this prostate trouble?
I have a really enlarged prostate. 4x the normal size.

Had it biopsied because it showed a large PSA value (17).

Biopsy came back negative. Psa density function actually puts my levels in normal range.

I still have difficulties urinating.

Currently taking medication to reduce the size of my prostate, but not happy about the meds because of the sexual side effects.

Would this procedure help me?

aantix··on Getting forked by Microsoft
Let's create a license where companies with X number of employees that create a fork automatically owe the original owner Y amount.

It's ridiculous that companies with literal trillion dollar market caps coast on the back open source.

aantix··on TikTok Is Harming Children at an Industrial Scale
I’m building a new YouTube player experience for my kids.

You can block shorts. Block keywords (e.g. Minecraft, MrBeast)

Email me if you’d like to test.

aantix··on Adipose tissue retains an epigenetic memory of obesity after weight loss
This is not untrue.

Look at the long term numbers for successfully keeping weight off, 5, 10 years out.

They’re abysmal.

aantix··on Attention K-Mart Shoppers
I need one of those "Blue Light Special" lights attached to my laptop.

Probably will need to develop an SDK for it..

aantix··on Pentagon to terminate $5.1B in IT contracts with Accenture, Deloitte
With that much liberty, there’s no point to the bands in the first place. They become meaningless.
aantix··on Pentagon to terminate $5.1B in IT contracts with Accenture, Deloitte
Salary banding doesn’t attract the talent you need. Maybe, good enough?

E.g. Who would contribute to open source, speak at conferences, write blog articles, go above and beyond to outwardly contribute, only to be grouped with others to make the same? Terrible deal.

aantix··on What if your website had business hours? (2022)
Sidekiq - a background job framework for Rails, has an office hour, for which you have to RSVP for.

That seemed like a reasonable way to set boundaries but provide some entry level support.

aantix··on Sleep is essential – researchers are trying to work out why
When I take a supplement with sulforaphane, I feel like I need less sleep.

I feel refreshed in the morning. Strange.

aantix··on Using fake deadlines without driving your engineers crazy
Yeah, I feel like he sunk his entire post with this first learning.

What's the point if nothing happens?

It doesn't have to be "we ship to a million users".

It could be simply "The CEO will then test the flow and give their feedback".

Then, those stakeholders have to hold up their end of the bargain as well, actually use the feature, and give thoughtful feedback. If they don't reciprocate, the future of all fake deadlines is in jeopardy.

aantix··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (March 2025)
I’ve been thinking lots about the YouTube algorithm, how it’s based on engagement, not educational value, and how it’s such a huge missed opportunity for our kids.

So I’ve been building my own YouTube app, for my own kids. Better blocking of keywords (no more 1,000 MrBeast video recommendations). Better educational themes.

Email me if you’re interested in testing.

This looks wonderful to use. Is there video playback?

aantix··on 4o Image Generation
The video was helpful. I started with the prompt "Generate a transparent image. "

And that created the isolated image on a transparent background.

Thank-you.

aantix··on 4o Image Generation
Still seems to have problems with transparent backgrounds.
aantix··on 22% Drop in Programming Jobs
This number feels too low..

I have some amazing developer friends in the U.S. that are still out of a job, 9 months later.

aantix··on The School Car Pickup Line Is a National Embarrassment
Raising children is no longer a communal effort.

If you let your kid out roaming, walking home from school, and the child causes a minor issue, you get the wrath of "Why aren't you watching your kid?"???

So we've developed this culture around ensuring that the child is accounted for at all hours of the day. Drop off, pickup from school, included.

aantix··on YouTube DRM added on ALL videos with TV (TVHTML5) clients
I've been creating a web-based YouTube player for my kids.

Will this restrict iframe embedded video playback?

aantix··on With AI you need to think bigger
Humans are inherently greedy.

Once we get a feel for what the AI can and cannot do, bigger bets will occur.

Currently, companies seem tight - team counts are held low, and hiring is frozen. Very much a position of "let's see how much AI efficiency gains us".

But eventually, the money sitting on the sidelines will look attractive again - attractive for taking bigger, more ambitious bets.

More hiring has to take place.

aantix··on Laser-based device can scan almost any sample of gas and tell you what's in it
If you wanted to identify the components of a liquid, could you heat it and analyze the steam?
aantix··on I Used to Teach Students. Now I Catch ChatGPT Cheats
The University of Texas has 51,000 students.

In state tuition and fees are $31,000 per year. Out of state is $42,000.

aantix··on Evaluating modular RAG with reasoning models
When aggregating data from multiple systems, how do you handle the case of only searching against data chunks that the user is authorized to view? And if those permissions change?
aantix··on ChatGPT Saved My Life (no, seriously, I'm writing this from the ER)
If you create a custom gpt, it’ll will delegate to a custom gpt-4 model, “a specialized GPT-4 variant optimized for advanced health, genetics, and performance optimization.”
