aantix··on Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society?
Because the bottom tier of teachers have done wrong, it invalidates the whole system?

We all have a story of a favorite teacher, someone who inspired through story, who asked more from us, even when ourselves didn’t believe we’d achieve.

Violence is not acceptable, verbal and physical.

Even if their home life is a train wreck. It can be an explanation, but not a justification.

Robby is well known in the Ruby community.
aantix··on Position: LLMs Can't Jump
Don't these datasets already exist in terms of the real-world samplings we have when training robots to do every day tasks?
aantix··on Celebrating 45 Years of Kermit with the First New C-Kermit Release in 15 Years
I had an Apple 2+ back in 1992. It was an old computer, even then.

The Apple 2+ only supported displaying capital letters.

I remember calling a few local BBSes using terminal software that let me press the right arrow (I think) and the character key, and it would display the character inverted (white background, black letter).

Hayes 1200 baud serial modem (I think) hooked up to a serial card.

That's how I knew I was sending a capital letter.

Not sure if it was Kermit though..

aantix··on Gemini Robotics 2 brings whole body intelligence to robots
I'd want cleaning to happen every day during the week/

Probably $80/day for someone to do everything I want done. 20 days a month.

$1,600/month.

It'd take two years, and the robot has paid for itself.

aantix··on Gemini Robotics 2 brings whole body intelligence to robots
Most people finance vehicles that cost much more than 20K.

I'd gladly pay or finance a robot that could have dishes clean, laundry folded, and carpets vacuumed by the time our family got home.

aantix··on Why DNA damage from smoking and UV rays cause cancer in some but not others
Anecdotally, whenever I go swimming with my kids in the summer, and I don't put sunscreen on right away, but let myself get some intense direct sun, I feel good and sleep really well that night.

As long as I don't let myself get in a red, sunburn situation.

aantix··on OpenNode – Bitcoin Payment Processor
Genuine question - why would someone hold bitcoin for regular, everyday purchases?

The buying power is all over the place.

aantix··on Why is Meta destroying its engineering organization?
Never understood why Facebook hasn't implemented the 'Explain this post' type feature that you see on X (@grok).

Facebook seems to be the most misinformed audience - an LLM fact checker would be a great addition.

aantix··on Stop Ruining It
The reverse can be true too.

Don't make a bad situation worse.

aantix··on Uber president says AI spending is getting 'harder to justify'
It's a tradeoff.

Generating a feature that is 90% correct in a tenth of the time is a reasonable tradeoff if you're trying to gain traction.

Generating a feature that is 90% correct in a tenth of the time, risking a multi-billion-dollar business, is a terrible tradeoff.

aantix··on Ask HN: Who is using OpenClaw?
Claude Code already has that with channels. https://code.claude.com/docs/en/channels-reference

No need for OpenClaw.

aantix··on Some things just take time
Everyone is obsessed with speed.

But no one wants to go out of their house.

Social connections. Trust. Facetime. All matter more than ever.

Want a moatable software business? Know your customers on a personal level. Have a personal relationship. Know the people that sign the contracts, know their kids names, where they vacationed last winter, their favorite local restaurant.

Get out of the house.

South Carolina's beginning teacher salary is $42,500.

That's at 125% above the poverty level.

aantix··on Google Workspace CLI
It's an un-invite. A hollow gesture.

Google's Gemini can read Google Docs directly.

They really don't want you to use another LLM product.

So they make the setup as difficult as possible.

aantix··on Fix the iOS keyboard before the timer hits zero or I'm switching back to Android
I thought it was only me.

The autocomplete has a preference for proper nouns, even when they make zero sense .

The next suggested word is, at best, naive. Using the previous word, it would be clear that the subsequent suggestion would not be reasonable.

aantix··on Claude Code is suddenly everywhere inside Microsoft
Not my experience at all.

It fails to be pro-active. "Why didn't you run the tests you created?"

I want it to tell me if the implementation is working.

Feels lazy. And it hallucinates solutions frequently.

It pales in comparison to CC/Opus.

aantix··on Anthropic taps IPO lawyers as it races OpenAI to go public
Have you tried Opus 4.5?

It's an absolute workhorse.

It is so proactive in fixing blockers - 90% of the time for me, choosing the right path forward.

aantix··on I have recordings proving Coinbase knew about breach months before disclosure
Offshoring support for financial data should be illegal.

Even if they find the inside individuals, how could anyone ever present a legal case?

aantix··on I didn't reverse-engineer the protocol for my blood pressure monitor in 24 hours
A concerted effort to consume 2-4g of potassium daily has definitely helped lower my blood pressure.

I'd be wary of the sugars in bananas and orange juice.

Are there any software engineers here that believe in the afterlife?
aantix··on More big companies bet they can still grow without hiring
This was reverted.
aantix··on More big companies bet they can still grow without hiring
Growth through savings is limited.

Greed is sustainable.

When there's enough money on the sidelines, the pendulum swings, and big bets come back in fashion.

Downsizing is not a big bet.

Nobody leads tech to save billions and have money sit on the sidelines. It's a weak, shallow bet that should be reserved for discount retail and commodity markets.

The savings will be spent on engineering, eventually.

aantix··on Friendship Begins at Home
There is a nutritional lens that rarely gets talked about.

Magnesium glycinate, magnesium threonate, l-theanine, inositol, NAC - all have been both calming and help with negative ruminations, for me.

aantix··on Friendship Begins at Home
I've been pretty harsh on myself over the years.

I started carrying around a photo of myself as a kid. I'm sitting against a wall, by a pillar, at our state capital. My eyes are shut. I was kind of a shy kid.

When I start to get frustrated and talk to myself in that short, abrasive, condescending tone, I think of that photo and of myself, as still that kid.

It helps me to be more compassionate towards myself in those moments. I'm still that shy kid trying to make sense of the world.

I'm 47.

aantix··on Why I Chose Elixir Phoenix over Rails, Laravel, and Next.js
You can swap out the ActionCable backend with different providers.

Redis, postgres. I think there's a couple of commercial offerings.

solid_cable is a database polling mechanism which can also be swapped in.
