a3n··on Biohackers take aim at big pharma’s stranglehold on insulin
Money is, after all, "speech."

Walk softly and carry a big purse.

a3n··on Biohackers take aim at big pharma’s stranglehold on insulin
When you're told you're number one your whole life, you don't go anywhere else, and your religion and patriotism are joined at the hip, why, there's no reason to change anything.

> Call your congresscritter.

Sorry, but regular people don't make "campaign contributions" of any noticable size, so all we get back is a form letter acknowledgement based on whatever box you checked for subject.

Big Pharma, Big X and Big Y, on the other hand, "donate" enough "campaign contributions" that the campaigner can all but ensure (re) election based on recent name recognition to get the nomination, then counting on "their" voters being unable to vote for the opposite party even with the discovery of a live boy or a dead girl.

a3n··on Ask HN: How do you write succint emails?
TIL.

I've always called it bottom line at the top because of the symmetry, and because what we're taking about is literally being placed ... at the top.

a3n··on Citing a serious flight test incident, FAA slows Boeing 777X certification
It may not be lazy engineers so much as senior engineers leaving, and new seniors not effectively mentored and grown.
a3n··on Citing a serious flight test incident, FAA slows Boeing 777X certification
I knew one of those. He insisted on remaining a contractor, I think for his particular tax situation.

He would have to leave the company every so often because of company rules (or labor law?) about how long the company could employee a contractor. Eventually he'd get hired back in, as a contractor.

a3n··on Citing a serious flight test incident, FAA slows Boeing 777X certification
Boeing management used to be grown from engineers. The person promoted would have been practicing "engineering in the large." I don't know if that's still true.
a3n··on Citing a serious flight test incident, FAA slows Boeing 777X certification
Total guess, some of those managers probably do appreciate what software engineering is, and what it needs, but they're pressured by their managers to cut costs and expertise.
a3n··on Ask HN: How do you write succint emails?
> For long emails, I'm adding TL;DR in the first lines of the email body.

Yes. Bottom line at the top.

a3n··on Ask HN: Words of encouragement for someone lost in life?
Unless you're in prison for murder or mayhem, it's hard to say anyone is a "failure."

At most, you haven't found an arrangement that works for you.

The American Dream, for example, or parts thereof, is a perfectly good set of goals. Whatever your chosen career, is a perfectly good goal. But if you couldn't make that happen, there are lots of other ways to be satisfied, and to contribute.

I've been under employed, and went on Medicaid for actual survival (diabetes). I wasn't a failure, I was just in a very unpleasant situation.

The key to my change in happiness and outlook was to accept that who I thought I was, was no longer true, but something new and different was just fine.

Sometimes the tragedy is living in someone else's rut, even after that rut has run out.

a3n··on Ask HN: Words of encouragement for someone lost in life?
Yeah, I was in my 30s. Private language school.
a3n··on Ask HN: Words of encouragement for someone lost in life?
23 is much too early to declare yourself a failure in life. That's the depression talking. "That shit ain't the truth."

Just because you're not having the outcomes that you want does not mean you're a failure.

Depression and feelings of inadequacy and failure are a vicious circle, because ... depression makes it hard to succeed.

Depression also makes it hard to connect with people, and hard to stay connected.

Depression also makes it hard to take care of yourself.

Try to find a primary care physician, or a therapist, or a similar professional. If you don't like who you find, for whatever reason, find a different one.

Treat them like a project manager. Be sure to be actively involved in choosing your management tactics.

I've tried suicide twice. Once when I was five. Once when I was about your age. I'm 63 now, and I'm glad that I didn't succeed.

Only within the last ten years did I ask for professional help. It saved my life. Most of my life prior was like dental work without novacaine.

Two of the things that have helped me (YMMV) are a prescription, and a career change.

a3n··on Ask HN: Words of encouragement for someone lost in life?
No point to make, just responding ...

I had to quit Facebook, it amplified my depression.

I met my first wife IRL, in high school.

I met my second wife IRL, in a language class. She was the teacher.

a3n··on Ask HN: LinkedIn suggesting I connect with my infertility doctor
Way back when I was still on LinkedIn they suggested I connect with a neighbor in my apartment building. The only thing we had in common was the street address. We'd never spoken. I recognized her from being around, and that she worked in the store around the corner.

What finally pushed me out was they kept suggesting I connect with people from a former employer, which employer I would prefer to just forget. I'd even taken the employer's name off my resume.

I wonder what people trying to avoid abusive spouses and other dangerous people can do. Probably have to leave LinkedIn.

a3n··on Why is AI hard and physics simple?
> Ignoring the mathematician’s appeal to rigorous (re)formulation, we focus on the latter part of the quote: “The physicist’s often crude experience leads in an uncanny number of cases to an amazingly accurate description of a large class of phenomena.”

Non-practitioner in either field ...

If you don't focus on the more or less "defined" ML subset, and focus on the AI in the question, whatever "AI" has meant over the years, then ...

The reason why AI is hard and physics simple may be that physics already "is," while we may not yet have defined what AI should be and what to do with it .

Physics has guardrails of reality, however subtle and hidden they may be. What is described by physics is what it is, and will be there as it is, whether we correctly describe it or not, and whether we observe it or not. (Depending on your view of an observed universe's dependant relationship with its observer.)

AI is ... what? In any particular decade? We aren't describing anything that already is, and that comes with constraints. We're making it up.

Specification is hard.

The universe as described by physics, on the other hand, is well beyond specification and requirements gathering. We're just writing the missing manual.

a3n··on The Teamsters announce coordinated nationwide project to unionize Amazon
> The unions also buy off politicians to disastrous effect.

Any sufficiently entrenched bureaucracy is indistinguishable from corruption.

With apologies ...

a3n··on Internal Amazon documents shed light on how company pressures out office workers
Yeah, they're leaving in droves. They're also arriving in droves, which is why Amazon has been able to withstand 150% turnover.

But Amazon is now worried that they've worn out much of the US workforce available for "industrial athlete"positions. (Their term.) The droves of arrivals may slow down to dribbles.

a3n··on Internal Amazon documents shed light on how company pressures out office workers
> I suspect much of janitorial and security staff in Amazon HQ probably have no access to stock options either.

It's likely that security and janitorial are 3rd party contractors and have no access to anything available from Amazon whatsoever.

a3n··on Ask HN: Who visits the HN “new” tab?
I visit the first page of the front page, and then if I have time I scroll through all of New, sometimes until I see where I left off before.

The New page holds some of the most interesting content, similar to how "not appropriate" stack overflow questions and comments are the most interesting.

I was talking to a psychiatrist during a divorce many years ago. He was astounded that I had read Martin Seligman, from his profession, and called me a Renaissance man. Saw it on HN.

a3n··on Ask HN: Austin vs. Miami?
> Plus who knows how long it will stay above the water line.

They have water seeping up into parking garages now. Worse than it was a few years ago. These are the good old days.

a3n··on Ask HN: How often do you zoom in to read text on your screen?
Often. First choice is reader view, which gets rid of most "elegant" impediments to reading. If not available, then zoom. Or sometimes landscape.
