a3n··on Ask HN: Why does no one seem to care that AI gives wrong answers?
Where "acceptable bounds" equals whatever the current proportion is.
a3n··on Racket Plot Cookbook
And plotting to do it.
a3n··on Air-Bus Hijacking: Silently Taking over Avionics Systems
I think it's better to take away options, rather than throw up your hands.

Just because someone can load up my car on a flat bed tow truck doesn't mean it's pointless for me to have locks on the doors and ignition.

a3n··on Air-Bus Hijacking: Silently Taking over Avionics Systems
Why wasn't Prigozhin killed on the ground?
a3n··on What Should I Do?
Based on the first half of your second paragraph, you might be happier working for someone with an interesting product who's willing and able to take on the doubt and fear. It might get you from here to "better" faster. Or at all.

I think starting your own thing will also make you forget you have a life. But are you honestly able to power through the doubts you raise, to a meaningful next state?

If you can afford it, you might do the two columns on a piece of paper exercise, quit the job that loses, then exhale a bit, think, and explore.

a3n··on Ask HN: Social network with actual vetted humans?
I vaguely recall something about key signing parties. That could be a model.

Or maybe I'm thinking about key parties.

I was never into either community. I'm probably confused.

a3n··on Python Modern Practices
But there are plenty of new ones.
a3n··on Supreme Court rules ex-presidents have immunity for official acts
Officer's oath swears to protect and defend the Constitution, no mention of the president.

Enlisted oath adds they will obey the orders of the president.

So a president or his intermediary just needs to find the right Master Sergeant. In theory.

But not to worry, there are plenty of authoritarian-friendly colonels available. Their oath doesn't prohibit them from following a president's orders.

Wrinkle: all officers and enlisted are required to refuse illegal orders. But if you do so, you better be right.

Of course, in this new United States that the Supreme Court created this week, summary executions could become a motivational tool.

a3n··on Show HN: A Modern Palletization App
Fun fact: inside many of the trailers you see, it's just manually loaded and stacked, and manually unloaded, individual boxes. No pallets.

Not most. But many.

Another fun fact: US/NATO logistics is pallet-based. Russian is largely not.

Unloading shells on a hot day in a "bucket brigade" must be fun.

a3n··on Ask HN: How do you deal with being more intelligent than the general population?
Although I don't know my IQ, and don't care, I'm certain that I'm solidly in the "general population."

This helps me, and it may help you. Virtually nothing you or I say or do matters. It's bullshit, signifying nothing, all the way down.

So just enjoy whatever it is you do.

a3n··on Oklahoma's State Superintendent Requires Public Schools to Teach the Bible
It's gonna get worse.

As a citizen, and given the way I vote and live, Christian Nationalism and all of the tentacles hanging down from it is the scariest thing I've ever experienced.

a3n··on Show HN: A Modern Palletization App
I agree, very nice.

I'm a truck driver. My analogy, zooming out a bit, is that the entire road system, at least the National Network, is a system of interconnecting and overlapping conveyor belts.

The trailers are trays on the belt.

a3n··on Starship launch debris landed 6 miles north, residents report broken windows
I'm guessing that undiverted flame and related debris could ricochet up to the rocket and cause problems.
a3n··on Career advice no one gave me: Give a lot of notice when you quit
Or, you can give two weeks notice, and then be fired for quitting.
a3n··on Microsoft drops Twitter from its advertising platform
I don't know what I'm talking about, but ... Has Musk actually paid all the money for his essentially (self) forced purchase? Is there additional that he'll be on the hook for?

From the outside, it sure looks like he's trying to destroy his own company. Which makes no sense, unless he can thereby profit or at least avoid some obligations.

a3n··on Will UT Austin and Texas A&M survive beyond this week?
"what kind of person feels like"

It's a quest for victimhood to justify hate.

a3n··on Ask HN: Is IQ test a thing during hiring in your country or industry?
Years ago, when I was still in tech, an interviewer asked me how to time something using burning rope, or something like that. Most have probably seen the puzzle.

I'd seen it before, but couldn't remember how to do it, and couldn't figure it out.

I said "Just tell me the answer."

He recommended me for hire anyway.

Months later I asked him why he asked such a ridiculous question. He said he wanted to know how I think. So I asked him, how do I think?

He didn't really have an answer. He either hadn't thought that far ahead while planning the interview, or didn't have enough information to tell him how I think, or he was too polite to say that I really just don't think.

a3n··on ‘Stop or I’ll fire you’: the driver who defied Uber’s automated HR
The gift of incorporation should come with significant responsibility and deference to actual corporeal beings.
a3n··on Ask HN: Become a 10x developer with LLM? Myth? Reality?
[ignorant bystander]

Since LLMs are trained, by their training, and I guess by your prompts (per session at least?), the only participant progressing toward 10X status would be the LLM.

a3n··on Please delete 2M files to continue using your Google Drive account
I think you are ChatGPT﹡.

I think you posting the wrong answer is Step N-1.

Step N is when you, ChatGPT, harvest the better answer, package it, and send it to your human prompter, or to the other instance of ChatGPT that prompted you.

﹡(this post is also satire)

a3n··on Immunity from Covid-19 Infection May Be as Strong as from Vaccination
> This narrative has nothing to do with reality, because vaccinated people spread covid, too.

But not as a result of acquiring immunity.

a3n··on Immunity from Covid-19 Infection May Be as Strong as from Vaccination
Downside to natural immunity: because you've necessarily been infected, you put yourself and others, and their others, in danger from covid.

This doesn't happen with, at least, the viruses used in the US, because it doesn't use killed or weakened covid.

I would think real danger to self and others would greatly outweigh any theoretically greater efficacy of natural over vaccinated.

a3n··on How did this PayPal spoof email pass SPF, DKIM and DMARC
> Regular email users who are not email experts can either trust all emails or delete most of them.

I do the latter.

Default practice these days should be do not respond to any phone call, text, email etc. if you don't recognize it, and if you have a non-personal relationship to what appears to be the sender, don't answer it unless it's a response to your initial communication.

Communications these days are mostly vans with candy and missing puppies. Based on my spam folder and incoming call records anyway.

a3n··on How did this PayPal spoof email pass SPF, DKIM and DMARC
Any sufficiently smelly marketing campaign is indistinguishable from phishing.
a3n··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
Metal fork, spoon, knife, ceramic plate, ceramic mug.

Thank you, long forgotten prehistoric people.

a3n··on Ask HN: Do you ever give money to those guys with signs at stoplights?
Rarely.

I once gave two jackets, that I was going to donate somewhere, to a guy with a sign. He immediately put them both on.

a3n··on ProtonMail deletes 'we don't log your IP' from website after activist arrested

a3n··on Who Owns the US National Debt?
I kind of don't think local van delivery drivers are DOT regulated.

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=do+you+need+a+cdl+to+drive+for+Ama...

The people under Amazon's purview that are DOT regulated would be CDL holders driving semi trucks and similar. Those are strictly drug and alcohol regulated, with fed mandated preemployment and ongoing random tests.
