a1445c8b··on SpaceX launches mission for 2 NASA astronauts who are stuck on the ISS
You’re missing a few factors:

1. The US would’ve been paying Russia about 10x the cost if SpaceX didn’t exist.

2. Boeing was awarded a ~$3B contract within the Artemis mission and, so far, the outcome is that they can’t safely bring back the astronauts they sent to space.

Those two factors alone indicate that it’s more a mutually beneficial relationship between SpaceX and the government with, arguably, SpaceX providing more benefit relative to the government.

“Normal” and “common” would still be the last words on my mind considering the amount of planning and money that goes into sending people to space and back. The only normal situation would be they go there and then back alive on the same mission as originally planned. Any divergence from that is totally abnormal.

In this particular case, the person of interest published 800 widely cited papers. That seems like a considerable collapse.

My immature brain didn’t get past this sentence.

Using the word “accumulator” wouldn’t be enough to differentiate batteries from capacitors, inductors, etc. which are also accumulators.

> So it scares me a bit when something like Ozepmic pops up and tons of people jump on it, without knowing the long term effects that might appear.

Test in production. YOLO!

One could also argue that this continuous feedback loop is the scientific process in action.

It helps though with remembering where you are in your codebase. Rather than cluttering my brain with the info that Nerdtree provides, I can instead use the extra brainpower for other things.
a1445c8b··on LXD is now under Canonical
The problem with auto updates for daemons and services is that the maintainer cannot possibly account for all the different ways their software is used to be able to guarantee that the new version doesn’t break some critical service. It’s akin to a team outsourcing their CI/CD pipeline to some 3rd party who have no idea they exist!

Too much idle cash is a wasted asset.

As for money markets, don’t those get invested in treasury bills/notes anyway? Why go through a “middleman” when one has enough volume to invest directly?

Short-term obligations may not provide the yield that their financial structure requires.

10-year notes, in certain situations, provide an optimal combo of yield and risk. Provided, of course, that nothing major happens to the economy which wasn’t the case here. Then again, who’s good at predicting that?

In the end, it seemed like, given what was true at the time the decision was made, SVB made a rational choice.

Ah. Excellent, thanks!
a1445c8b··on Show HN: slidesdown - Zero Installation Slideshows in Markdown
I love the zero-install feature for sure! I noticed that SLIDES.md could also be read directly so I’m curious if we could just rename it to README.md and then, probably as an option, tell Slidesdown to load that file instead.

a1445c8b··on Mastodon.lol will shut down on May 9, 2023
Wait, so:

1. Some HP video game is release;

2. Users who bought it mentioned it in mastodon.lol;

3. Other users want to ban them because...JK Rowling is...a Nazi(?);

4. Other users posted spoilers because...JK Rowling bad and anyone who does not know that deserves getting their day ruined(?);

5. Mastodon.lol owner chide these other users and gets harassed as a result;

6. Mastodon.lol owner decides to shut down site;

Is mastodon.lol really just a toddlers’ playground rather than a town hall?

a1445c8b··on Ask HN: I'm a good programmer, I know nothing about marketing. Where do I start?
When you say “Marketing” do you really mean just the subsets “Marketing Communications,” and “Sales,” or do you also mean the things needed to find product-market fit?

a1445c8b··on Eye contact marks the rise and fall of shared attention in conversation
I always thought it depended on how closely seated you are to the other person? The closer we are (e.g. seated next to each other over dinner), the higher the chances of the aforementioned reaction.

I <3 you, Hacker News.
a1445c8b··on Eye contact marks the rise and fall of shared attention in conversation
I also tend to stare at the mouth of the person I’m talking to!

Which, I think, makes it look like I’m looking at their chest because the women I talk to almost invariably adjust their shirt in a way that suggests they’ve become uncomfortable (because they think I’m looking at their chest)
