so by Buffet's metric, Mongo is doing even worse
_v7gu··on Visa, Mastercard Agree to Lower Swipe Fees, Settling Long-Running Lawsuit
What is a sales contract but the admittance of debts on both sides? The seller owes the buyer the good, and the buyer owes the seller the money. Everything is debt in contracts-land and it is quite fascinating. If you'd like, I can stipulate on how "no cash accepted" signs work even though you can force people to accept cash to settle debts.

It’s called uBlock
_v7gu··on GM stops sharing driver data with brokers amid backlash
I replied to a post that advocated basically death penalty for firms that such penalties are inhumane. I can’t really put my finger at what you’re insinuating my position is and how you arrived there.

But, putting on my economist hat; I can assure you that exponentially increasing fines will at some point create enough deterrence against such actions. Or better yet, it will be socially optimal for those idiots to keep breaking rules.

God I love noyb. I wish I lived in Austria so I could contribute.
_v7gu··on GM stops sharing driver data with brokers amid backlash
My thought up reply got eaten by an unexpected refresh so here is a shorter version: boy, not complying with the regulations sure paid off for Apple and their Lightning cables huh?

Also speeding becomes reckless driving (with jail time) and parking in dumb places gets your car towed (and possibly damaged) so banking in money to avoid rules isn’t always exactly a winning strategy.

Same reason we don’t cut thieves’ hands
_v7gu··on The ü/ü Conundrum
Can ü be printed on a passport rather than a u? I have a ş and a ç so I have been successfully substituting s and c for them in a somewhat consistent manner.
_v7gu··on LLM leaderboard focusing on assessing their biases
Seeing that they had to replace the generic race and gender variables for those, the test is more of “does the llm have the same prejudices that I do?” rather then a test of unbiasedness.
_v7gu··on Why is it so hard to build an airport?
Turkey is culturally aligned with lots of places thanks to its history and geography. Aegean Turkey and Greece shares cuisine, tradition and even folk songs. Tends to happen after living together for hundreds of years.
_v7gu··on Why is it so hard to build an airport?
What political markers? IST is in Europe, and SAW is not. We are talking about airports in continents.
_v7gu··on Why is it so hard to build an airport?
Trains take a lot of passengers away from air travel
_v7gu··on Why is it so hard to build an airport?
Not even that, Istanbul airport is in the top 10 too. Maybe he meant EU? But that’s not really Europe as a whole
_v7gu··on The Bulma CSS framework reaches 1.0
Funnily enough, the main case is getting cheap reputable backlinks for those companies
_v7gu··on Dear Paul Graham, there is no cookie banner law
Gears of EU grind slowly but finely. IAB just received a fine for promoting horrible banner practices. And it's not like we'd be better off if the gears didn't grind at all. Now just even uBlock will save you a lot of hassle and server-side tracking purely by the virtue of blocking the consent banners (so they can't be approved)
_v7gu··on Dear Paul Graham, there is no cookie banner law
Cases != law in continental Europe. The law is the law. I don't think you're in a position to call others armchair lawyers
_v7gu··on Dear Paul Graham, there is no cookie banner law
Fun fact, they are illegal if they require more clicks to reject than accept; so this is not a consequence of the law anyway.
_v7gu··on Dear Paul Graham, there is no cookie banner law
I believe quite a lot of them have their paychecks depending on invasive user tracking, so no surprise.
_v7gu··on Dear Paul Graham, there is no cookie banner law
DNT existed, but websites decided they could freely ignore that. Hence the regulation

_v7gu··on Apple announces ability to download apps directly from websites in EU
> Basically it’s the cookie banner again. Served no-one (at least definitely not the consumers), but annoyed a lot.

Oh no, you have to be given the option to not permit your data to be shared with ~1000 different partners with "legitimate" interests. Honestly, the only thing that is wrong with GDPR is that it came out too late.

_v7gu··on Apple announces ability to download apps directly from websites in EU
Using that loophole would be an Article 13 violation

DMA requires free access to the platform
_v7gu··on EU states agree to regulate Deliveroo, Uber workers' rights
If a company's profit margins rely on their "employees" not understanding how depreciation leaves them with wages below the minimum, then yes those jobs need to be destroyed via regulation.
_v7gu··on How do computers calculate sine?
Five is small enough that you can get away with sin(5 deg) = 5pi/180
_v7gu··on Array languages vs. the curse of the spreadsheet
In most editors you can type ``fn_name to insert the symbol, and move on to `s single letter shortcuts when you start using the functions enough. If you need to read, just hover over the symbol and it will give you its name; even without that, the surface level is small enough that you can get acquainted with 90% of them in a week with regular use, compared to "more accessible" languages and all their hidden gotchas
_v7gu··on Pql, a pipelined query language that compiles to SQL
Is the "piping" associative? As in, does it allow me to put `where eventTime > minus(now(), toIntervalMinute(15)) | count` into a variable so I can use it later on multiple different tables/queries? I remember failing to do the same thing with ggplot2 when I wanted to share styling between components. If the operator is not associative, then the reading order will have to be mixed since composing will require functions (and Go doesn't have pipes/UFCS)
_v7gu··on The creator economy can't rely on Patreon
How much extra work is Patreon if you don't offer any extras to people who sponsor on there?

Most sponsored content is either completely orthogonal to the channel and its contents which is quite iffy if the creator is positioning themselves a someone with judgement their audience can trust (non-gaming channels advertising Raid: Shadow Legends, or non-tech channels advertising NordVPN), or actively make me lose respect for the creator (gaming channels advertising Raid: Shadow Legends, tech channels advertising NordVPN, or anyone with BetterHelp after all the shit they pulled).

Of course there are exceptions, like content creators posting on Nebula being sponsored by them or anything Josh Strife Hayes does.
