nobody is against his moral stance. the problem is that he’s playing the “principled stand” game on a budget that cannot sustain it, then externalizing the cost like a victim. if you're a millionaire and can hold whatever moral line you want without ever worrying about rent, food, healthcare, kids, etc. then "selling out" is optional and bad. if you're joe schmoe with a mortgage and 5 months of emergency savings, and you refuse the main kind of work people want to pay you for (which is not even that controversial), you’re not some noble hero, you’re just blowing up your life.

if the alternative to 'selling out' is making your business unviable and having to beg the internet for handouts(essentially), then yes, you should "sell out" every time.

I want to sympathize but enforcing a moral blockade on the "vast majority" of inbound inquiries is a self-inflicted wound, not a business failure. This guy is hardly a victim when the bottleneck is explicitly his own refusal to adapt.

I was curious about how he actually died and found an [1] article describing it:

> Kahneman used the services of Pegasos in the village of Roderis in Nunningen, Switzerland. In the death room with a view over green hills, wearing a suit and tie, he lay on the bed and turned on an infusion of sodium pentobarbital himself. A companion held his hand and told him they were holding it on behalf of his loved ones. Kahneman's last words were "I feel their love."

i get that they're probably busy making AGI but surely they can spare a few hours to make a proper website? or is this some 4d-chess countersignalling i'm too stupid to notice?

Rating estimate came within 30 points of my current FIDE rating. Shockingly accurate!

I spend ~85% of my time inside Chrome such that the only possible tool that could work for me is a Chrome extension. I currently use https://prodtodolist.com/ for general reminders but it's too barebones and something like this implemented as a ~minimalist~ Chrome extension could be very handy.

Basically all these puzzles are trying to train your combinational vision and calculation. An important component of calculation is getting good at executing 'forcing' moves (moves where your opponent has only one or two plausible choices) which are more clearly illustrated in attacking positions or 'Mate in X' positions. Even though the most readily available material is from 'attacking' positions, this skill is transferrable to many other kinds of positions(e.g pawn endings). Defense on the other hand is often more vague with more than one optimal strategy and rarely forcing, so there's just not a lot of good material to draw from.

Your hunch is right. The "moderate middle" trope is a product of lazy pundits and independent voters are actually all over the ideological map - https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-moderate-middle-is-...

Here's a respected UChicago professor that offers an alternative hypothesis than the dominant 'Putin bad' narrative https://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/russia-fsu/2014-08-1...

Sorry, but Kasparov is a charlatan with zero qualifications to speak on complex global geopolitics. His main claim to fame is inserting himself into Russian opposition politics for two years post-retirement and then cosplaying to US neocon audiences as a Soviet expert. HN would be particularly unimpressed by the book which is pretty tedious and self-referential and only prescient in the most obvious ways.

Exactly right. Essentially the consumerist, "fast food for the brain" idea is what I was struggling to point out. Having read a little of this thread though, I'm more open to the idea that even what seems to me as fluff is pretty useful as a regular centering mechanism so I'm just moderately indifferent instead of annoyed now.

I can't put my finger on it but I always find this modern(Americanized?) peddling of stoicism too pretentious and vapid as to be not only useless but actively off-putting to me. The fact that life is short is already central to most adults and I don't see what purpose any of these reminders serve except to seem high-minded (and annoying). The faux precision of this "clock" also bothers me but that's a different story.

It's Google SEO, as others have pointed out. A pretty insightful look into the incentives in this article - https://www.protocol.com/tech-vs-food-bloggers

Ezra Klein's interview with Noam Chomsky - https://podcasts.apple.com/podcast/the-ezra-klein-show/id154...

Even though I was familiar with most of Chomsky's spiel, this was a total joy to listen to and I was very inspired by the great righteous indignation and moral clarity that Chomsky still speaks with and only he can summon. Lots of provocative thoughts on capitalism, class, American politics and a breadth of other topics, as a bonus.

It's probably by design, but from experience most people will need non-trivial discipline/hacks to get around the 30 day window and avoid reflexively logging in. Would be curious to know how many people who try deleting their accounts follow through to the end

I was proposing another factor to add to his thesis. Israel is a pretty rich country.

Well, access to guns is a pretty big factor as well. Sub-Saharan Africa is just as poor or poorer than inner city US yet has way lower homicide rates

watching this vid has reminded how much the chess world is lucky to have MC as its flagship ambassador. He is almost the ideal WC. Caruana would be such a huge stepdown. Michal Krasenkow has compared Caruana to Euwe - "[Caruana] is an extremely pleasant young man and an outstanding player but lacking a unique personal style and a champion's charisma." I couldn't agree more.

Oh, right. I guess I did notice the change but sort of seamlessly just moved on. Aside from the sidebar(s), I still honestly don't notice any significant difference.

Am I blind or what? I have not noticed a single change to my account, not at least in the last 2 weeks. Is there a screenshot of said changes I can check?

A sample but a self-selected, louder sample. I would bet the overwhelming majority of users are indifferent to the change.

thanks!

Seems like I need an account to either purchase or rent both articles?
