_shadi··on Go hard on agents, not on your filesystem
I had the same idea and created this quickly in an evening: https://github.com/Shadi/isolate
_shadi··on Tell HN: HN was down
> anti-crawler protections

what type of protections are used on HN? rate-limiting? ip range blacklist?

_shadi··on I am a programmer, not a rubber-stamp that approves Copilot generated code
> Why is there not any kind of narrative out there describing how fake and soulless is code written by any AI agent?

because soulless code does not matter. For other fields the result is more subjective, I don't like movies with desaturated color palette, a lot of people like them, maybe LLMs can produce new genre of movies, which people who appreciate classic films or music find it soulless, and find it sad that the peasants kind of like these films and the whole thing a risk for their careers or whole craft and the human effort in making their art work.

In code its objective, either the result work or not work, I guess you can stretch "it works" to have a different meaning that can include maintainability where it starts to get more subjective, but at the end of the day you will also can get to a point where the whole thing can collapse under its weight.

I think this is the main difference in reaction to LLMs between different fields, fields that are subjective and more to sensitive to receiver taste you can notice a rage(I think range is an overstatement) against it, while fields where the result is objective the reaction from people is simply saying it does or doesn't work.

_shadi··on ‘No Other Land’ consultant Awdah Hathaleen killed by Israeli settler
> I am guessing that no-one ever gets convicted for this murder.

He was arrested by Israeli police for questioning, but was later released on house arrest while an investigation continued.

About a dozen Israeli soldiers raided the mourning tent, pushing those attending out while keeping a thumb on the pin of a stun grenade. Soldiers declared the area a closed military zone and said only residents of the village could be present. They arrested two activists and threw stun grenades at journalists who were too slow to leave.

_shadi··on Intel CEO Letter to Employees
One theory that I saw earlier was that the industry is bloated, big tech companies executives knew that but they continued to hire anyway to make sure that the people they don't hire don't start competitors when there was funding, there is less funding now so that risk is no longer there so companies can reduce their size to their actual needs, but maybe that does not apply to intel since they seem to be really in a bad situation now.
_shadi··on Show HN: Pangolin – Open source alternative to Cloudflare Tunnels
This project sounds really interesting as an alternative to cloudflare and for decentralizating the internet, but for some low traffic home server what would I gain with using it instead of directly exposing a single port on my home server with nginx, I have static IP from my ISP, right now it is exposed as the server IP, what would I gain if I use a cheap vps as a proxy first?
_shadi··on AI: Accelerated Incompetence
I might have not been clear in my original reply, I don't have this problem when using an LLM myself, I sometimes notice this when I review code by new joiners that was written with the help of an LLM, the code quality is usually ok unless I want to be pedantic, but sometimes the agent helper make new comers dig themselves deeper in the wrong approach while if they asked a human coworker they would probably have noticed that the solution is going the wrong way from the start, which touches on what the original article is about, I don't know if that is incompetence acceleration, but if used wrong or maybe not in a clear directed way, it can produce something that works but has monstrous unneeded complexity.
_shadi··on AI: Accelerated Incompetence
A big problem I keep facing when reviewing junior engineers code is not the code quality itself but the direction the solution went into, I'm not sure if LLM models are capable of replying to you with a question of why you want to do it that way(yes like the famous stackoverflow answers).
_shadi··on Replit used legal threats to kill my open-source project (2021)
> If someone interned as a doctor's assistant at a medical center and then later started their own medical center. Can their previous employer sue them for that? It's nonsense.

As I said the legality of this is not so simple to answer, yes you can intern as a doctor at one place and then open a similar one, and if someone tries file a suit about this then I think it will be very hard to find a sympathetic judge to look into it, but once you bring IP into this it becomes a lot more complicated, calculus is also about ideas, yet it didn't stop Leibniz or Newton from making accusations of plagiarizing.

>If Replit can sue this guy, then Cloud9 can sue Replit, WebStorm can sue Cloud9, Microsoft can sue WebStorm, etc, etc... Who even invented the first IDE?

the difference here is that the guy worked/interned at replit, this what moves it for me from the founder being an asshole to a grey area where he sees someone had access to all resources at the company and now wants to use that knowledge(or at least having access to it) to create an alternative and he decides to go with a heavy handed approach before it becomes a big headache, was he nice in how he went about it? no

_shadi··on Replit used legal threats to kill my open-source project (2021)
Someone interned at a company, saw and worked on the IP and architecture, and after leaving created something that can be viewed as a copy(the emails say that even some of the UI design and languages description were copied) of the core business of the place they worked at, maybe the response was a bit too heavy handed, but you don't exactly expect roses after doing something like that.

This seems somewhat unethical, and whether it is legal or not that is up to lawyers and specialized people of law to decide, and the founder wanted those people to get involved to decide that, again nothing crazy to expect after you create a copy of a project you were paid (or at least trained) to work on and learn all about it.

_shadi··on Alaska CEO: We found many loose bolts on our Max planes
disgusting, but I guess the airline is easier to bin it to than the airplane manufacturer who had airplane problems with multiple airlines.
_shadi··on Organization probably doesn't want to improve things
> It's not that all organizations don't have disfunction, but as a younger person I was very fixated on everything I saw that was wrong and ignored either the problems I myself was introducing which were (and probably still are) numerous or the systems and programs that made the organization successful.

speaking from my own experience, when I look at my earlier career years I didn't appreciate how resilient organizations can be to disfunction, yes 100 things are broken, but for the most part everything will still be fine.

_shadi··on Why Americans Are So Awful to One Another
I don't live in America, but I think this is related to the unprecedented mass communication that has been made possible by the internet, and as cliche as it sounds it truly made borders disappear between different countries, contents and cultures, which is making this generation exposed to things previous generations didn't even think they exist or have people believe in it, the only countries that seem a bit isolated from this are the ones who have their own internet circles because of language or laws.

But I'm a little optimistic that this would eventually pass with time, If we apply `Tuckman's stages of group development` to the whole world and communication between its parts I think we are in storming phase.

_shadi··on Ask HN: What tech newsletters are you currently subscribing to?
I add them to inoreader, whenever I'm on a bus, can't sleep or have 5-10 minutes of free time I open inoreader and read instead of mindless scrolling, some of the articles are out of date by the time I get to them, but all in all it is more satisfying way to kill free time instead of reading comments.

in addition to tech you can also add long form journalism from authors/magazines you trust, usually these things tend to be more analytical and not related to the current thing/hype.

_shadi··on Anna’s Archive: Open-source data library
how different is it then from libgen?
_shadi··on Night of the Runbooks: a DevOps horror story
non native speaker too, I was taught that "they" is the more formal/neutral pronoun to use, or preferred in passive case, isn't that the case here?
_shadi··on The age of average

_shadi··on The Chinese Civil Examinations
aren't people already tired of those tweet size tropes.

Revanchism, extreme nationalism and economic anxiety among other reasons what led to the rise of the ww1 veteran who happened to fail an art admission

_shadi··on I don’t believe in sprints
the writer assumes that sprints are adopted to help the developers, while in fact its a tool so that product owners track progress in a way to have a shorter feedback cycle than in months.

Of course its more convenient not to worry about sprints and time/points and "just work", and that is usually the case in startups or backend teams where the stakeholders are all always present in the same room, but once you add more layers to the organisation chart it becomes harder to track what everyone is focused on right now and that they are planning to do next without sprints or something similar.

_shadi··on What Beirut was like before the war (2019)
related: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/may/14/secret-british...

The effort, run from the mid-1950s through to the late 70s by a unit in London that was part of the Foreign Office, was focused on cold war enemies such as the Soviet Union and China, leftwing liberation groups and leaders that the UK saw as threats to its interests

The campaign also sought to mobilise Muslims against Moscow, promoting greater religious conservatism and radical ideas. To appear authentic, documents encouraged hatred of Israel.

Recently declassified British government documents reveal hundreds of extensive and costly operations.

_shadi··on What Beirut was like before the war (2019)
I would say the trend started before the 90s but it became apparent in the 90s.

It started in the 70s, before that all the islamist political groups were heavily repressed by Nasser and different nationalist leaders in the region, Sadat realignment, the Islamic revolution in Iran, and the commercialization of oil in the gulf countries opened the Pandora box for the different(and sometimes warring) groups inspired by different interpretations of Islam.

_shadi··on What Beirut was like before the war (2019)
> largely as a result of radical Islamist Palestinians who had left Palestine and wanted an Islamic state in Lebanon.

those damn communist and nationalist Palestinian factions wanting to create a caliphate.

Not interested in a political discussion, just wanted to point out that this guy has no idea about the Lebanese civil war or the history of the region

_shadi··on Ask HN: I have no idea about world economics. How I can fix that?
You can read some of the essays John Keynes wrote, still as relevant as when they were wrote, especially now with the pandemic and inflation.

even if you don't end up agreeing with his views(I do agree, and I think he is very underrated), its still a very good and eye-opening reads.

_shadi··on Ask HN: Why not have Netflix users vote on which movies/shows to green-light?
This is already the case in a way, X show was more viewed than Y, make more shows similar of X.

You will also end up with less ground breaking shows and more mundane stuff which is already the problem at Netflix.

“If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.”

_shadi··on Ask HN: Why did the ruble stabilize and what's going on?
The original cycle started with Germany:

_shadi··on Tell HN: Gnome on Wayland Is Amazing
Every time I used Gnome 3 I ended up leaving it after few months, it always get slower with time, especially with Firefox, and yet I couldn't find any memory leaks in it.
_shadi··on Ask HN: Is your team using story points to estimate work? Why or why not?
We don't call them story points, but we have 3 classifications:

1 point: can be done within a week

2 points: 1 week to 2 weeks

3 points: needs more research and breakdown, possibly an epic

1 and 2 tend to be picked up and worked on directly, for 3 someone picks it out and the goal is to create more tickets based on it and not do the solution directly.

_shadi··on Ghost Army: The Inflatable Tanks That Fooled Hitler (2013)
I remember reading somewhere that Serbia used a similar tactic to fool the NATO aircraft in Kosovo.
_shadi··on Ask HN: Traveled 10k km for new job and was just shouted at. What do I do?
Try to stay calm and think about your current situation, and what effects any decisions you make will have long term, it is easy to make bad decisions when you are in a bad state of mind.

Even if you leave your current job, nothing guarantees that the next one will be better, and it might sound easy to leave everything and go back to your home country, but you will miss a lot by living in the new place for just a short time, the best thing I can think of is to try to talk to your manager and tell them that you are not happy about the way that they communicate with you, and even if you are performing badly that they should inform you about that and what you need to do to improve in a less offensive way, some people will change their behavior once they are confronted, hopefully that will make them treat you better in the future.

it is hard to offer any advice without any more information, if it is only your manager/team then maybe consider switching to a different team, if it is a company-wide thing then probably it is best to leave, check you current visa/status and see if it is easy to change jobs, if not then think(with a clear and calm head) about whether you can stick with your current job until you can change it or not, and what any decisions you make now will mean down the line.

one last advice if you decide to stay with it, being in a bad workplace will affect you mentally and that might have an affect on your life and relationships outside of work, try to minimize that and keep all of this at work.
