_rkz1··on Stuffed Dormouse and Fish Gut Sauce: The Flavors of Pompeii (2019)
I'd imagine through trade, much like how it seems to be the explanation for why most languages call "tea" some variation of te, cha, or chai.
_rkz1··on FragAttacks: new security vulnerabilities that affect wi-fi devices
In addition to that, you might want/need to use only wired connections to your router and rip out any components that enable wireless.

How would opt-in work in practice? Say, if this gets pushed out on $CAFE public wifi for analytics. Would it be something akin to "tick this consent box to use the wifi"?

And if $CAFE tracks you regardless of you not ticking the box or connecting to the network, how do I detect that as a regular customer?

The Streisand effect strikes again!
_rkz1··on Mighty Makes Google Chrome Faster
I think they mean you'll use 1/10th the amount of memory Chrome would use on your machine.
_rkz1··on Yamauchi No.10 Family Office
In childhood especially, the line between the virtual and the real is flimsier than you think.
_rkz1··on Show HN: I created a no-code job board for careers in indie games
Webflow, it seems (not OP).
_rkz1··on Show HN: Kinopio.club – visual thinking, brainstorming tool
This looks really cool. The spaces I've found so far from the explore tab are delightfully wacky[0] and make me excited for what I can do with this.

Are there limits for how many cards can go on one space (with a subscription)? I couldn't find that in the help docs.

_rkz1··on Show HN: Kinopio.club – visual thinking, brainstorming tool
Could you maybe link to a different space with your cluster of thoughts/cards there? I'm not sure if there's a limit for spaces.
_rkz1··on Ask HN: Developing an easy to use Coursera like website for my dad
YMMV but I’ve seen Teachable used well in cases like this. That should allow you to avoid reinventing the wheel.
_rkz1··on Ask HN: What decision has made the largest impact on your life?
I sent only one each since I put in my guesses in some free email validation site beforehand. I also sent out emails to other C-level people.

The formats were usually firstname@company.com for most of them, but firstname.lastname came up a few times.

_rkz1··on Ask HN: What decision has made the largest impact on your life?
I'm 19 so the bar for "impact on my life" is relatively low, but probably choosing to cold-email a bunch of startup CEOs whose emails I guessed at the start of 2019. It got me my first SWE internship, which helped me get full-time positions afterwards.
_rkz1··on Database Internals
Awesome. Just signed up. Any ideas on what the pricing will be like?
_rkz1··on A Dropbox account gave me stomach ulcers
The best worst thing I’ve ever read. No idea how they pulled that off for so long.
_rkz1··on Ask HN: What are the best computing-related videos you've watched recently?
An excellent conference video explaining the event loop in Javascript (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aGhZQkoFbQ)
_rkz1··on Two malicious Python libraries caught stealing SSH and GPG keys
I saw a recorded conference talk where they mentioned Snyk as a way to keep your eye on package vulns, but have never used it myself
_rkz1··on Urbit
Thank you! This is probably the first clear explanation I’ve read about Urbit. I’m far more interested in the project now. Good luck on development.

It would help to have a condensed version of your comment on the website, as opposed to space metaphors and pictures of rocks ;)

_rkz1··on Urbit
It would be a great opportunity for them to explain what it is, at least.
_rkz1··on Urbit
I heard of Urbit a while back and still cannot for the life of me figure out what it does or what it's for.

The comments here are helping me figure out how it works, but it still leaves me with the question of what can I do with it that I can't accomplish with my good ol' OS or internet or (whatever the closest conventional analogue for Urbit is).

_rkz1··on My .in domain has been transferred to another registrant without notification
They could definitely do a better job of explaining what it is, how it works, and why I need it. I am interested though
_rkz1··on Show HN: CyberStyle.css – CSS Stylesheet Inspired by Tesla CyberTruck
I think this was based on the styling of the order page rather than the aesthetics of the truck itself
_rkz1··on The ghosts of technology in today’s language (2018)
I had a very different assumption of where those phrases came from until now
_rkz1··on Ask HN: Who are your programming rockstars, and why?
Searched the comments for this. I read Jeff Dean's undergrad thesis and it's super inspiring to see how skilled he was way, way before Google
_rkz1··on Show HN: I made a no-bullshit image host
Love how buying the site only gets you 1GB hosting. Hope this works out.
_rkz1··on Eton College exam question asks students to justify the Army killing protesters
As part of the debate team in high school, I had to do the same thing (prepare for both sides). I think it is an excellent exercise in critical thinking, even if you wholly disagree with what you're arguing for. Sometimes it even led me to find points I never thought of in the opposing side that I agreed with.
_rkz1··on Eton College exam question asks students to justify the Army killing protesters
I mostly agree, but wasn't this part of acceptance into a scholarship program? I'd imagine they want to see aptitude beyond their age.
_rkz1··on Eton College exam question asks students to justify the Army killing protesters
Right. I don't understand why you were downvoted.

I don't think Eton College was trying to imply that such a brutal intervention was moral or even necessary, but they simply wanted to test a student's ability to argue and reason that it was despite how difficult and internally conflicting such a stance would be to most people.

The difficulty was the point, no? They could've chosen a less controversial prompt, I suppose, but why not this one? What difficult stances are not controversial?

_rkz1··on Novelty and Heresy
Yeah, those were some of the ideas I thought about but I found it difficult to find the kind of value PG mentioned from them in the midst of the bad ideas.

Thanks though! I also find myself hesitating to comment or post here to avoid getting downvoted. I would've thought HN would be the most tolerant among online communities of controversial or even obviously wrong ideas.

_rkz1··on Novelty and Heresy
Thanks! It was an interesting read regardless of the understandable controversy of the topic. Sorry to see you were downvoted. Anyone else?
_rkz1··on Novelty and Heresy
What are some examples of ideas today that are considered heretical but may have value to them?
