_raul··on Learning Elm by porting a medium-sized web frontend from React (2019)
Exactly the same delightful experience here. Sadly it’s only become an even harder sell since then.
_raul··on Ask HN: Resources to start learning about quantum computing?
The PragProg folks have a new book that includes exercises and looks very promising as an introductory material. It's available in beta state and apparently about to be finished: https://pragprog.com/titles/nmquantum/
_raul··on In defense of hiring based on side projects
It took me years to notice a flaw in this approach: it's based in the premise that everyone has time for side projects.

From that point I think about it as a bias. Nowadays I try to assess if the candidates with no public activity on GH and no side projects have the passion and interest I look for, but can't take it further outside of work due to their specific circumstances.

_raul··on New TLS certificate for .herokuapp.com hostnames
There's more context in this Heroku Changelog https://devcenter.heroku.com/changelog-items/1813

"On Tuesday June 9th 2020 Heroku changed the certificate used for terminating TLS for built-in <appname>.herokuapp.com hostnames from a certificate issued by DigiCert to one issued by Starfield/AWS. This change was rolled back on June 10th because a small subset of Heroku customers had pinned apps to the DigiCert certificate or had apps that could not establish a chain of trust with the new certificate for other reasons.

A new DigiCert-signed certificate will replace the current one before June 22nd (when it expires)."

_raul··on Launch HN: Buy Me a Coffee (YC W19) – Give your audience a way to thank you
The implementation looks pretty slick to me!

If you're taking care of most/all the technical details, the only blocker that would prevent me from this kind of service is the unknown legal/compliance work I'd need to do in order to start taking this kind of money and have access to those users' data - is that something you can provide guidance on?

_raul··on Sebastião Salgado: Gold
I can't recommend enough watching the The Salt of the Earth[0] documentary. It's not only an impactful review of Salgado's career but also a great (and visual) way to expand our knowledge about the world and its recent history.

_raul··on Lumen: Compile Erlang/Elixir Applications to WebAssembly
Presented at the ElixirConf 2019 keynote: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMgTIlgYB-U
_raul··on Ask HN: Jobs in Spain?
I live in Spain, outside of those two hubs but always keep an eye on them. Both have healthy dev communities that organize monthly meetups and conferences where it's easy to connect with local startups. Lots of open opportunities, often open to foreign folks, and at least a few companies with very strong technical teams. Salaries aren't near the SF range but should allow you to afford a healthy work/life balance and enjoy your time here.
_raul··on Ask HN: Has Anyone Completed “Writing a Compiler in Go” by Thorsten Ball
I’m not sure you’ve seen it’s in Amazon, has a few (good) reviews there: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/cr/3982016118/ref=mw_dp_cr
_raul··on Ask HN: What project ideas have you had, think it would work, but will never do?
I haven’t used it yet, but sounds a lot like Postgrest (you almost nailed the name ) http://postgrest.org
_raul··on Crafting Interpreters
Notice that while the linked page says "You can read the whole book, for free, online", chapters 18 to 30 haven't been written yet (e.g: http://craftinginterpreters.com/types-of-values.html).
_raul··on Ask HN: Registrar with highly technical staff
DNSimple offers a fantastic service provided by a highly technical team.

I have no affiliation with them other than being a happy customer.

_raul··on Software Engineering in Barcelona vs. Madrid
It’s definitely getting better. If you can, take your time to find conpanies that follow and encourage best practices (proper staging environments and project management, testing, continuous integration and deployment, training resources, career path). Some well-known big consultancies are disguised sweatshops, avoid them like the plague. Attending local meetups should get you in touch with the kind of companies and team mates that you’d like to work with.
_raul··on Software Engineering in Barcelona vs. Madrid
> in many comments given in forums, it's been stated that the people in BCN are less warm than the people living in Madrid. I do not know the reason of that. Would that have an adverse impact on my life as a foreign person willing to go to Spain?

In my experience, both cities are plenty of people that didn't grow up there, and plenty of foreigners. Most of the folks you'll interact with will be genuinely welcoming and willing to help you feel like home.

You'd totally make more money in UK, but I think that the quality of life you can get with nice CS-related job in Madrid/Barcelona is definitely worth trying.

_raul··on The “Run Less Software” philosophy

_raul··on JSON Schema
Heroku does, and has built some nice open-source tools around it: https://blog.heroku.com/json_schema_for_heroku_platform_api
_raul··on This is not a new year’s resolution
I struggle to estimate any dev work beyond a few weeks, so I wonder if some of these estimates may be wishful thinking too - maybe the Manas.Tech folks have a good sense of the theory behind the work that’s left though, in which case it’s only (“only”) a matter of implementing it. In any case, I wish them the best and hope that they can release 1.0 next year!
_raul··on Overview of the Crystal language
Nim is the closest language to what you're describing that I've found so far https://nim-lang.org/
_raul··on Ask HN: Best tech for a web site 2018? (PHP, Rails, Django, Node, Go, etc.)?
My rule of thumb for websites/apps is: use whatever the team knows best. Certain stacks provide specific advantages (time to MVP, performance...) but I don't think any of them trumps an experienced team with production projects under their belt.
_raul··on Ask HN: How can I find org charts of top tech companies and startups?
Mandatory link to a classic http://bonkersworld.net/organizational-charts
_raul··on Building a Command-Line Application with Crystal
I've started to transition from Ruby to Crystal for my pet projects and haven't hit any serious issues so far. Since you seem to have much more experience than I do, would you mind elaborating a bit on the issues you found and why you think the compiler and type system are bad?
_raul··on Unplanned Freefall? Some Survival Tips
I remember hearing it from Steve McQueen in The Magnificent Seven when I was a kid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7GP3l5znc8
_raul··on Ask HN: It's Thanksgiving. What are you thankful for?
For being healthy. For loving and feeling loved. For working for a company whose vision I believe on, with people I learn from, and which allows me to work remotely so I can spend most of my time with the people I love. For having a job that is well paid, that I enjoy doing and that allows me to see how people use my work to learn and build amazing things. For being part of communities that share their work and knowledge so we can grow faster than what we'd do individually.
_raul··on Crystal: Fast as C, Slick as Ruby
This may be the closest alternative right now: https://github.com/ysbaddaden/frost
_raul··on Ask HN: Does such a programming language exist?
I think Nim[1] or Crystal[2] may be a good fit.

_raul··on Readability, hackability, and abstraction
I've taken a quick look at it and looks very interesting, can't wait to fully read it this evening. Thank you!
_raul··on Readability, hackability, and abstraction
Sorry if this sounds too basic but I'd love to learn more about how to apply anonymous functions to improve this kind of control flow - would you mind recommending some resources/examples?
_raul··on On software popularity
I guess the main concern here wouldn't be Cuba, but the "handpicked solutions for common problems that a web app would face" added by the development team.
_raul··on Does your Macbook adapter plug wire break?
The only downside I've found is visual: Sugru includes some tips to give it a good-looking aspect, but of course it won't look as cool as if it wasn't there. Still, I'm very happy with it.

I've read some comments about Sugru not being flexible: in my experience it's been very flexible and durable and will keep using it for every new Apple adapter I buy.

_raul··on Does your Macbook adapter plug wire break?
After fixing a couple of adapters I started protecting them with Sugru: https://sugru.com Works like a charm.
