_random_··on The weaker sex
It would be nice if Economist could post an article discussing the supply of "marriageable women" (using their words).

Also, plenty of old failing "you can have it all" narrative like:

"Women have learned that they can be surgeons and physicists without losing their femininity."

In much of the world they still enjoy social and legal privileges simply because they have a Y chromosome.

But there were some good conclusions: "More generally, schools need to become more boy-friendly...".

_random_··on Ask HN: Is it worth competing with Google?
> ... kills Dropbox/Box/etc at consumer level ...

It takes more than just being better when you are late to market.

> Self driving cars are fast approaching. Will anyone beat Google at this?

Uber? They are the fresh blood and moving fast in everything.

> Maps will have offline navigation soon. Why use Bing or Apple maps?

I use Nokia Here Maps. They have offline navigation today. On my device. Which is not Android.

> Android is everywhere.

Not on iPhones. Not on content-producing devices.

> Google Now and their new Google Now features look great.

2015s version of Clippy. Predictive analysis is not ready. Beware of the hype curve.

> Is there any space that they are not in / won't enter?

Their business is still revolving around ads. They are lagging in enterprise. They cannot beat Amazon at shopping. They cannot beat Apple/Microsoft at premium device design quality. They are not perfect.

PS: It's great that Google exists, but don't put it on pedestal.

If something is nice Google either kills it or makes it not nice.
_random_··on The Supercomputer In Your Pocket: Metal and Swift
Please add Metal & Swift to the title: mentioning these proprietary closed-source technologies might change peoples' expectation.
_random_··on Google Design
No pixel-perfect alignment. Embracing the flaws.
_random_··on Google Design
Well done Microsoft: inspiring not one, but two major competitors. Metro aka Modern aka Material rocks!

I was expecting one of those trendy HTML5 logo generators...
_random_··on Mozilla overhauls Firefox smartphone plan to focus on quality, not cost
That's part of their agenda. If they will let people easily use other languages, naturally only JS devs will use JS.
_random_··on Deep Dive into .NET Universal Windows App Development
You can use non-legacy non-ubiquitous languages (as opposed to HTML/JS/CSS), because it's not public-facing. Microsoft is sending a mixed message to enterprise: should they bet on HTML5 and possibly quit the MS ecosystem whatsoever, or XAML is still a major investment for Microsoft? They need to demonstrate that WPF/XAML team is more important than ASP/Azure team.
_random_··on Deep Dive into .NET Universal Windows App Development
XAML is quite verbose, they are not making any radical changes - that's the problem. There is no daring attitude that you can see in the ASP team.
_random_··on Deep Dive into .NET Universal Windows App Development
So you can easily just change a build flag without touching any XAML or creating a new project and everything just works?
_random_··on Deep Dive into .NET Universal Windows App Development
Is Visual Studio Code made with WPF? Is Visual Studio Online made with WPF? Is WPF open-source and multi-platform? Guess which one(s) will survive in 5 years?
_random_··on I am jealous of Swift
They were desperate to release something ASAP. The enemy is at the gates.
_random_··on Can Aging Be Cured?
That's cool, as long as everyone has both options.

Thousand years later, first colonists in a different galaxy:

- Remember that dude from our childhood?

- Yeah, choosing to live a mere 70 years - so weird...

- Never mind, let's keep Terra-forming..."

_random_··on Can Aging Be Cured?
Becoming rich within 1000 years is more plausible than within ~80 years. Unless the concept of being "rich" disappears due to progress.
_random_··on Can Aging Be Cured?
Most lives already end with a disease. You don't die from old age.

Investing in things other than not-freaking-dying - now that's awkward.

_random_··on Can Aging Be Cured?
In other words, investing in future will actually make sense.
_random_··on Eliminate the Gender Pay Gap by Banning Salary Negotiations
Appointing her as a CEO was such a great idea. Reddit thrives on censorship and social justice.
_random_··on Godot 1.1 Out
"Python-based scripting language, designed to make games."

:(

_random_··on How Swift is Swift?
"is the language named after some design philosophy that it is supposed to embody"

They stole it from a previous language and then swiftly forged the wiki:

_random_··on Quasar and Akka – a Comparison
You can add Akka.NET stats: 2,352 commits, 6 branches, 28 releases, 52 contributors.

_random_··on Quasar and Akka – a Comparison
They have conveniently omitted the fact of existence of Akka.NET which gives C#, F#, .NET support.

This is not a minor feature.

_random_··on Renaming the Company
Scala is definitely type-safe but Akka is not really reactive:

_random_··on Ask HN: Am I missing out by not being in sillicon valley?
Not until you marry if you intend to. The quality of spouse material in smaller towns is higher.
_random_··on Meteor Raises $20M
Is that still a requirement for start-ups? Now, if they are not going to spend at least half the money on a new fancy office - that would be a major concern for investors.
_random_··on Why GitHub is not your CV (2013)
"... 'passion’ ... means you have an enthusiasm for your work that extends beyond your working hours"

For me passion is when you are up-to-date with the trends and strive to (re-)factor your code to be better.

Unpaid overtime is most definitely a NO though, but the pay doesn't have to be immediate.
