_j5l3··on CS 161 – Computer Security – Syllabus and important notes [pdf]
I was at berkeley for physics and computer science, and while some physics classes had problems with the number of students enrolling, they were nowhere near as bad as the CS classes. It's well known at Cal that there's way too many incoming CS major. They recently started capping the major to people above a certain GPA, but apparently that isn't enough.

Telebears is certainly shit, but it's not to blame for this particular fuckup.
_j5l3··on Hopscotch – easy product tours by LinkedIn
I worked at linkedin last summer, and I remember seeing a project exactly like this at one of the hackday presentation. It's nice to see that it turned into something.
_j5l3··on [dead]
Just came back up.
_j5l3··on [dead]
Just lost it in California.
_j5l3··on Panopticlick – How Unique, and Trackable, Is Your Browser?
Wouldn't switching browsers/adding a plugin get around the block really easily?
_j5l3··on *args and **kwargs in python explained
I've been looking for something exactly like this. It's so tedious trying to remember what metadata needs to be copied from a function when making a decorator. Thanks!
_j5l3··on House of Lords debates pardon for Alan Turing
As much as I agree with this sentiment, I think it's better to downvote him to invisibility and not respond to his comments.
_j5l3··on Red Bull and Business Strategy
Yeah, that part kind of bugged me too. What is it about a meta-story (by the article's definition) that makes it neither non-fiction or fiction?
_j5l3··on Seth Vidal, creator of yum, killed in hit and run accident
How does the speed of someone on the sidewalk affect a driver?
_j5l3··on What could the NSA do with a quantum computer?
You're right. I should have specified that they can run certain algorithms with a runtime complexity impossible on a classical computer.
_j5l3··on What could the NSA do with a quantum computer?
Quantum computers are not just super-fast versions of normal computers. They allow the running of some algorithms that normal computers can't physically run. One particularly important algorithm is Shor's algorithm.

Shor's algorithm allows quick factorization of primes. RSA encryption, the main way that things are encrypted today, relies on the assumption that factoring large primes is computationally infeasible. So quantum computers would allow the NSA to read RSA-encrypted data.

Do you mean...2 am?
_j5l3··on Prince Of Persia Code Review
It's posted pretty regularly on HN. http://blog.dave.io/2011/10/0x5f3759df-true-magic-number/
_j5l3··on LinkedIn suffers DNS hijack
I was an engineering intern there for a summer. The interviews were as difficult as any other tech company in the valley, as was the workload. It is most certainly a tech company.
_j5l3··on The Paradox of the Proof
As someone newly entering the workforce, this is a really depressing view into how bureaucracy can squash innovation.
_j5l3··on 19-year-old auctioned off 10 percent of her salary for 10 years
You mean the median is even less, right?
_j5l3··on Bitcoin Falls Below $117
A 10% change in value in an hour is not "normal volatility" for any other currency.
_j5l3··on Piracy Doesn’t Hurt Game of Thrones, Director Says
They only average out if they're uncorrelated. I'd say it's pretty likely that high-budget, expensive games are more likely to be released with DRM than low-budget indie ones. You could try randomizing on budget, dev size, etc..., but there's really so many random variables to account for in game development (expected sales? platforms released on?) that you'd need a ton of data before you really got something that's statistically significant.

Although I'm no statistician either, so whatever.

_j5l3··on ‘If We Had Glass’ Hackathon
What an oddly specific parody.
_j5l3··on Google Glass - If I Had Glass

_j5l3··on Ask HN: What are starting salaries for CS grads this year?
In the valley, they're usually around 95-105k, depending on equity and stuff.
_j5l3··on In Defense of "The Big Bang Theory"
is it alright to dislike TBBT just because it's really unfunny and lazy comedy?
