_int3_··on Tell HN: Living without electricity in Kyiv

    > How do you work from home, when the power is out - your laptop may be working, but you have no Internet.
Obviously you can't and are too much dependent on Internet. Maybe you should consider alternative. Use offline-first applications in future.

Nuclear reactors become preferred targets during military conflict and, over the past three decades, have been repeatedly attacked during military air strikes, occupations, invasions and campaigns.

So yes, power plants are probable targets in war.

_int3_··on Biden cripples China's semiconductor industry overnight

I read variants of this phrase few times lately and I want to know more. Please explain?
_int3_··on Everyone going to World Cup must have this app, experts are sounding the alarm
In some cities (in western countries) you can't travel or do internet banking if you don't have the right app. Are you coerced? Yes you are. That is the same thing here. But you don't see "security experts" complaining.
_int3_··on Musk: Russia is actively trying to kill Starlink

  > Starlink is only comms system still working at warfront – others all dead.

  > Starlink is the primary communications system of the Ukrainian army on the war front. If anyone else wants this job, please be my guest …
Didn't know that. What happened to their usual comms?

This is really not about you "giving keys to your house" to Qatar. You already given keys of your house to Google and other parties, now they own your house and they don't like sharing it with Qatar.
_int3_··on A Microsoft blunder opened millions of PCs to potent malware attacks
Normally you can't run code in kernel as Administrator. You can only install signed driver. So if you BYOVD (bring your own vulnerable driver) you load signed driver then run your code in kernel.
_int3_··on WiGLE: Wireless Network Mapping
Good question. When I used WiGLE few years ago , i wanted to know if there was 1. free wifi in my area, 2. possibility to find geo-location of router from bssid, and 3. if there was local community wifi network. Found out that there was not enough public data, so i went to wardriving with WiGLE (private). Answer was 1. No 2. WiGLE is not very precise 3. No.

_int3_··on Ask HN: A Simple Phone
It's not smartphone fault that you are addict.
_int3_··on Is the body key to understanding consciousness?
Consciousness is the only thing we understand. We don't understand everything else.
_int3_··on Ask HN: Offline resources during internet outages?
I have feeling that we will all get Kivix, and wikipedia. Like we all bought toilet paper for lockdowns.

Better strategy is to some get music , some get movies, some get e-books, some get software , etc... You pick it at random.

_int3_··on Ask HN: Offline resources during internet outages?
1. get linux apt-get repository if you need software while offline. Whole thing has 70-80 GB.

2. get some HDD space, for sneakernet style sharing.

_int3_··on Ask HN: Offline resources during internet outages?
Kivix? https://library.kiwix.org/?lang=eng (beware, some packages actually won't work offline )
_int3_··on Never-before-seen malware has infected hundreds of Linux and Windows devices
I don't see need for "APE" in malware. You can just load specific executable.
_int3_··on My life got quite a lot better when I went back to an old school Nokia
Dumb phone won't solve your addiction, it's more like giving an addict clean needles.
_int3_··on My life got quite a lot better when I went back to an old school Nokia

  > free long distance calling/texting
What? Where?

  > maps, finding restaurants,
It's a dumb phone, not a map.

  > covid checkins,
You just print QR code and put it in your wallet.

  > taxis in foreign countries
You yell TAXI!!!
_int3_··on My life got quite a lot better when I went back to an old school Nokia
If you have to use smartphone for your work you have to. I don't use smartphone, if smartphone would be required for work , first they would have to get me smartphone, and buy me applications. And when I change job i just return it.
_int3_··on The most secure cloud is your computer
I think more secure way of storing data is offline backup, at least 2 geographic locations should be used.
_int3_··on What Are the Greenest Programming Languages?
There is no FORTH programming language on the list. I think it's worth mentioning because of compact source code and binary images that it produces; therefore, it conserves more energy necessary for making memory chip.
_int3_··on Why has software supply chain security exploded?
Programming style has changed over time to include more dependencies from 3rd party. Look at style of programming from 70s, they would do everything from OS , filesystem to application. Today there are many dependencies.

EDIT: It's much like building a tower. Upper floors depends on lower floors. Taller the construction more unstable it gets.

_int3_··on Why has software supply chain security exploded?
Business depends on trust, there is risk involved in doing business. There is always chance somebody will either not pay or not deliver, or deliver lower quality products than ordered (like this is the case with supply chain attack). And there is not much you can do about it. Later you can sue them or not do business with them anymore, but you don't know that in advance.
_int3_··on How Russia Uses Low Tech in Its High-Tech Weapons
I don't think they have better electronic components. They used cheap electronics discarded by west to make missiles.

And what you said, why develop their own? There's no reason, If it falls in wrong hands then it will be reverse engineered anyway.

_int3_··on Dead USB Drives Are Fine: Building a Reliable Sneakernet
I used sneakernet years ago, mostly as a last mile connection to internet. I would go to place with more bandwidth , download stuff burn it to CD , or save it on external hard drive, and go back.

I think many people still do it like that. There are 3.7 B people in the World without internet.
