_gtly··on ScyllaDB – Why We're Moving to a Source Available License
Seems that ScyllaDB takes advantage of https://seastar.io that shards across cores. It seems to still be open source (for the moment, at least). Wonder if other projects could benefit from its ideas.

_gtly··on Optimizing Ruby's JSON, Part 1
Unrelated to json, but a Rails commit by you 2024-10-29: ActiveModel::Type::Integer#serialize 3.17x - 9.67x faster!

_gtly··on Shrinking a Postgres Table
Very clearly written, though storing files directly in the database (rather than just the filename/path) isn't necessarily the best idea, but I guess it works for them for now..

_gtly··on Pipes: A spiritual successor to Yahoo Pipes
I want to support this idea, though If you use their service it's free to play around with 3 feeds, but then it gets more pricey. Maybe worth it for some?https://www.pipes.digital/pricing

A canister of hydrogen in your car isn't exactly safe, either!!
_gtly··on Ask HN: Is this a real device listening service?
I saw a link to this company posted on X and wonder if it's authentic (it seems like it). It's a service that apparently listens on your devices for you to say keywords/phrases and sells that information to advertisers - who then target you with ads. Is this legal? It seems to claim it is.. Can anything be done about this? We need stronger privacy laws, it seems.
_gtly··on Lex Fridman #398 – Mark Zuckerberg: First Interview in the Metaverse [video]
So this is obviously a big deal.. But I'm imagining a Black Mirror angle.. Will advertisers buy up some of your background space.. and pay for your intimate reaction data? They'll see how you react to everything in incredible detail. Will you be forced to wear these e.g.: while working and this could turn into some kind of surveillance apparatus with the data shared with your employer? Could interviews be done with these on and you'll be evaluated by AI?

_gtly··on Show HN: DigicamFinder – open-sourced DPReview camera data
Nice work! Wish there was a site that held information on more than just cameras - expanded to all types of electronics, for instance.. seeing all the hardware from a manufacturer over time is so useful for making buying decisions.

EDIT: Ah cool, I see this: "OPD plans to expand our dataset to other product types." source: https://github.com/open-product-data/digital-cameras/commit/...

_gtly··on DPReview.com to close
dpreview had a great feature which is hard to find elsewhere: You could see at a glance at what date each manufacturer released each model of their hardware. This was so useful because you could then predict when new releases would come out and you'd get a sense of what was the cutting edge. At a glance you'd know which models were the "latest". I will miss this! Making sense of models of hardware from different makers is very time consuming.

Wondering if anyone knows an alternative site for this...

_gtly··on Python-based compiler achieves orders-of-magnitude speedups
Paper here: "Codon: A Compiler for High-Performance Pythonic Applications and DSLs": https://dl.acm.org/doi/pdf/10.1145/3578360.3580275

"Currently, there are several Python features that Codon does not support. They mainly consist of runtime polymorphism, runtime reflection and type manipulation (e.g., dynamic method table modification, dynamic addition of class members, metaclasses, and class decorators). There are also gaps in the standard Python library coverage. While Codon ships with Python interoperability as a workaround to some of these limitations, future work is planned to expand the amount of Pythonic code immediately compatible with the framework by adding features such as runtime polymorphism and by implementing better interoperability with the existing Python libraries. Finally, we plan to increase the standard library coverage, as well as extend syntax configurability for custom DSLs."

_gtly··on MacBook Air M1 screen crack for no apparent reason
I know someone who put a square of gaffer's tape over their Macbook Pro's video camera (in theory to protect their privacy) and one day they lifted up the screen and it was cracked. It seemed like that little bit of tape might have been the culprit.

_gtly··on Kurt Vonnegut on the “shapes” of stories
Great choices. Welcome to the Monkey House is pretty great, too.
_gtly··on I have no idea what to do with my life
Though this may not work out very well in a Covid-inflicted world, one thing you could consider is traveling the world. You can pick up a Lonely Planet for a country that interests you and stay in modestly-priced hostels/hotels. It can be great to experience new cultures and meet other travelers. It can actually help you understand yourself and your own culture/values better. You can potentially do consulting gigs while you travel to help pay the bills.

Another thing you might try is to do something like a 10-day meditation course. You can find many places for this here: https://www.dhamma.org/en-US/index

Good luck to you!!
