_gfrc··on Forex Investors May Face $1B Loss as Trade Site Vanishes
Absolutely. Combine this with "The site said investors had averaged net gains of 1 percent each trading day during the past five years" and you have a giant stop sign.

I am always surprised when I read stories like this. They've lost 2000 pounds and the next thing they do is invest 60.000$?

This is a good example why we need more financial education in school.

_gfrc··on Ask HN: A new way of online buying and selling. Viable?
Are you proposing a reverse market, such as Zaarly initially did? If so, Fishbacks quora post about their pivot may explain to you why it's unlikely to work: http://www.quora.com/Why-did-Zaarly-pivot
_gfrc··on CryptoCat iOS Application Penetration Test [pdf]
We have a pretty cool submission system in use at my university, that will spin up a VM, compile and run your code and have a set of validators check if the output is correct. That way people can test their submission and immediately get feedback. You would still have to look into the code to make sure it's really valid, but I guess you could filter out lots of invalid submissions. If you are interested, I can hook you up with one of the developers of that system.
_gfrc··on Streetpong [video]
Yes, because we are actually stopping at them!
_gfrc··on Kids, this is story of How I Met... my VPS hacked
I agree that this would be the best option, but what is the point of remote deployment APIs then? Eg my CI deploys war files on a tomcat using tomcats remote deployment API, so tomcat must be able to write in its webapp directory. Would you suggest to deploy wars always via scp and a restart of the tomcat instance instead?
_gfrc··on What I learned from time away from the Internet and email
/etc/hosts does the trick for me. I'm also noticing that whenever I am stuck solving a problem I open a new tab, starting to type one of my self-forbidden websites. Blocking it completely helps :)

I've banned social networking / news reading to my phone, so I'm only doing it when I have to wait, e.g. on a train.

_gfrc··on Do What You Love? Screw That
I started my career because I love programming. That was a big mistake for me. Not because it didn't pay well, but because I lost the passion.

When I spend 8 hours a day programming, I don't want to do it at home. It's probably because I don't want to sit in front of a computer all day, or I am lacking social interaction at work. That's why I am currently trying to change my position. While I still love IT and everything tech-related, I want programming to become a hobby again.

I admire everyone who is programming after work, tinkering around, building stuff. I promised my nephew to build a quadrocopter with him, but I haven't done so, just because I am already programming and doing techy things each day again and again.

_gfrc··on An FBI Hostage Negotiator Buys A Car [audio]
Good examples for the discussed techniques.

I am actually surprised though, that the car sales man didn't ask how much he could pay. If the FBI negotiator still stuck with his initial offer, I guess he would have suggested some kind of monthly rate or a similar kind of loan that would "fit his lifestyle better".

_gfrc··on What makes something "notable"?
At first I thought he used some kind of text-generator, where you just have to fill in some blanks with buzzwords.
_gfrc··on How Ridiculous Is It That Apple Maps Redirect To Google Maps On The Web?
I don't think it's ridiculous. They don't have (probably don't want) a web version, so they are redirecting you to Google.

Would you prefer to read "sorry, you can only see this map on an iPhone/iPad with iOS 6 or higher"?

_gfrc··on Getting started with Grails Hackathon
If you want to get started with Grails, you should attend this (online) Hackathon.
_gfrc··on Apple's iPhone launches no longer excite
I am not blaming it on the others. The launch of the iPhone 5 is obviously not as interesting as the launch of the first iPhone, since they are just introducing more features, not a new device family.

It's a suspense thing - if you know what they are going to show the presentation gets boring. "Back in the days" it was exciting when there was one more thing. Now you already know what it is.

But again - I am not blaming anybody for this. I could just stay away from all rumor sites if I wanted to have that feeling again ;)

_gfrc··on Apple's iPhone launches no longer excite
This is probably why Cook said that they will "double down on secrecy". The event is really boring if you have seen all of the parts on the internet prior to the event (might be different for people not following the rumor mills).
_gfrc··on I feel I am building a new Google Wave
Did not work on my iPhone. Double tapping zoomed in as expected, but afterwards the design resized itself again. The result is quite funny ;)

I like the idea, though. Looks great on bigger devices.

_gfrc··on Online university granting certificates launched by Hasso Plattner Institute
The news itself is not that interesting, since you can watch most of their courses on iTunes U anyway, BUT: they will actually give you a certificate after passing the course.
_gfrc··on On Apple's new ads
There is actually another point to consider: employee satisfaction and recognition. These ads are stressing the importance of the geniuses for apple. Kind of like intels "our rockstars aren't your rockstars" campaign, which emphasizes the fact that the researchers and engineers are really important for intels success. I used to work as a researcher for another big software company and I would have loved such a spot, just to feel recognized. Our rockstars were definitely the sales people.
_gfrc··on What’s new in Groovy 2.0?
Key highlights as stated by Guillaume:

- a static type checker to let the compiler tell you about the correctness of your code,

- static compilation for the performance of the critical parts of your application,

- modularity, splitting the Groovy JAR into smaller feature-oriented JARs and letting you create your own extension modules,

- JDK 7 Project Coin syntax enhancements, so that Groovy is still as friendly as possible with its Java cousin,

- and JDK 7 Invoke Dynamic integration to benefit from the support of the JVM for dynamic languages.

_gfrc··on Building a dependable hosting stack using Hetzner’s servers
By the way - Hetzner lowered the setup fee, it used to be 149€, now it's 49€.
_gfrc··on Show HN : togist, chrome plugin
Works great! Thanks for sharing. Any plans to release something similar for other browsers?
_gfrc··on Ask HN: 4-day week startup list?
Maybe we can put a list together ourselves - the only startup I know doing this is Treehouse.
_gfrc··on Hello Downloader
I doubt that it will work. People who are willing to donate money to a band are much more likely to buy the album, instead of downloading it. That's how they want to show their support.
_gfrc··on My own private Internet: .secure TLD floated as bad-guy-free zone
This. When it comes to fishing, there is one rule: don't change your TLD. When I log in to PayPal I am always getting redirected from paypal.com to paypal-deutschland.de (the german tld), how is someone who is not internet savvy supposed to know whether he is getting phished or not, when even the companies use different TLDs?

Be consistent - using citibank.com and citibank.secure does not help at all, it will only confuse customers even more.

_gfrc··on Ask HN: Map-based Application vs. classic layout
Yep, big screens are an issue right now. While it is nice to have such a large map, it takes forever to load and the content window is, as you said, way too small.
_gfrc··on Microsoft has $60b in cash while Nokia's market cap is just $12b
You shouldn't. I doubt that they will buy them, they might support them even more to market their Windows Phones, but why would MS buy them? They already have a deal to produce Windows Phones.

MS didn't buy any other pc vendor for the same reason. They want to sell and license the software, without having to build the hardware.

_gfrc··on Workers, Take Off Your Headphones
A colleague of mine says that it distracts her when I speak german on the phone. She can tune out english just fine, but when somebody speaks in a foreign language, she has to use headphones.
_gfrc··on IPad app for Stack Overflow
Which is very unfortunate. A common set of UI widgets, used for within the right context, are what I like about iOS. I don't want to re-learn how a widget works with every new app.
_gfrc··on [dead]
Besides that - why would you actually rotate between a lot of devices? Is anyone here doing something similar? I get that it's nice to have a work phone and a private phone, but why would you rotate them? I can understand that someone wants to try something new, but in the end, I would stick to my favourite - not going back to an old one I didn't like.
_gfrc··on Firefox: Not A Good Citizen on OS X Lion
That's generally the problem when multi-platform software wants to "feel" the same on every platform. It just doesn't work. Mac users are used to a different UI, so even if you think that you approach is better, just don't do it. When it comes to usability, try to do it how everyone else developing for the platform is doing it.
_gfrc··on MIT shows DIY cell phone
would be interesting to see this one out in the wild ;)
_gfrc··on Skype IP Lookup
Ah, yes, just tried it again and it worked.
