_dark_matter_··on An Alien Mind
This is so, painfully, childish. Humans have known for thousands of years that there is no objective truth. Every falsity can be bent and twisted until it is more true than the sun itself.
_dark_matter_··on Protecting Engineers' Skills in the AI Era
Strong disagree. Do not conflate hard, human created works with AI slop.
_dark_matter_··on Hang on to Your Firefox
I worked at Mozilla for quite a long time. I can tell you that MANY employees will be reading every comment in this thread. Hello mozillians! Don't forget to do something good for the web tomorrow!
_dark_matter_··on Anthropic's best AI model struggles to attract users as cheaper tools thrive
Yeah but, which other llm?
_dark_matter_··on Show HN: How to mentally calculate the day of the week for any date

_dark_matter_··on Sticky wage norms and the real wage cost of unexpected inflation
I did that once. The company doubled rsus the next quarter (still didn't make up for it), then the stock price 5xed over the next 3 years. By the end of it, if I had stayed, I would have cleared 1.2M per year.

Although I heard they also fired some of those people with high rsus! So it goes both ways.

_dark_matter_··on A fortuitous decade as an indie software developer
How is this the most upvoted comment? I get great joy out of being a great engineer at work. I LOVE solving hard problems and helping people. People at work using my tools or reading my documents brings me joy.

You can do this and release things! Do both!

_dark_matter_··on Understanding is the new bottleneck
I agree with this. I am also starting to get a "feeling" of when I can trust an agent and when I can't. Recently I had it throw together a dashboard that displayed some basic linear models based on knobs on the dash, and I didn't really worry about it getting those wrong (I did spot check and it seemed good). But I also had to update a pretty complex flink app with state management changes that it totally borked.

The first task was more self constrained and less production impacting. The latter was detail oriented and required understanding complex distributed systems and state.

I would like to be able to formalize these kinds of tasks. I believe there are lots of confounding variables:

- Access to MCPs

- quality of documentation

- strong existing practices

- examples of similar code nearby

And then we can more easily determine what can be totally handed off and what can't be. I think that last one is most important, but similarly:

- how much this type of algo appears in the training set

Which is maybe part of the "feeling" that we have about what it will do well.

_dark_matter_··on Retire the Abstractions
Agreed. Turned into some ai slop quickly.
_dark_matter_··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
I wonder the same thing. I only imagine that what comes next is worse: AI companies using vast resources to develop new training data, in house, locked down. They are already doing this with developers and code at Meta. Information will become locked away behind AI paywalls and chatbots.
_dark_matter_··on Melatonin impairs morning cognition in healthy young adults (2023)
(referring to melatonin) yeah this is valid. I used to take melatonin every night, found out about the problems with us supply, couldn't find anything nearing 1/2 mg, and gave up. I took kids gummies for a few weeks, but I still think they were 1mg.
_dark_matter_··on 'Crush this lady': how eBay harassment campaign led to $56M payout
I think it should be scaled to the salary of 6 people. So about $3.15
_dark_matter_··on Californians' data deletion requests, DROP, become enforceable Aug. 1
Keep the old number and get a new one. You'll have to gradually switch all 2fa if you want to lose the old number, otherwise keep it forever on a separate device.
_dark_matter_··on Software for One
Interested to hear more. Auditing dependencies is hard. You fully trust the app restrictions on your phone?
_dark_matter_··on Software for One
This sounds like such a security risk. It just takes one bad library. Your phone and desktop are not a sandbox.
_dark_matter_··on Netflix employee fired for sharing personal details in retreat trust exercise
This is so sad. I have made amazing friends with my colleagues in the past. My days are made better when they can be funny, we can share moments, and we can support each other in hard times. Even remotely I have managed to stay in touch with them. It is a real friendship, built from a decade of learning just how this other person ticks.

Really hope I didn't have to ever give that up.

_dark_matter_··on Is Meta destroying its engineering organization?
Your team lost 50-75%? Is that an approximation, or do you just not know? Can't you just count who left to get the actual ratio?
_dark_matter_··on A 'cold blob' in the Atlantic could be a sign of AMOC shutdown
That first chapter lives rent-free in my head. Highly recommend reading it. https://www.scribd.com/document/979965270/Robinson-Kim-Stanl...
_dark_matter_··on U.S. to dismantle system tracking Atlantic currents that are at risk of collapse
This is just a different way if saying that we can't.
_dark_matter_··on CEO of largest public hospital says he's ready to replace radiologists with AI
For folks with long wait times, maybe the advantage of "immediate access to AI radiologist" beats out "wait for human radiologist"? Would be interesting to weigh those harms against each other.
_dark_matter_··on Netflix Backs Out of Warner Bros. Bidding, Paramount Set to Win
I literally do not understand this perspective. If that was true they would have let Netflix buy Warner Bros., which would have spun off CNN, and Skydance could have scooped it up for much much less money than buying the entirety of Warner Bros/discovery.
_dark_matter_··on Roger Ebert Reviews "The Shawshank Redemption" (1999)
Unbelievable film. I am so appreciative this was made.
_dark_matter_··on Claude Opus 4.6
Don't most jobs have unmetered access? I know mine does
_dark_matter_··on Systems Thinking
Iceberg is, primarily, a spec [0]. It defines exactly what data is stored and how it is interacted with. The community debates broadly on spec changes first, see a recent one on cross-platform SQL UDFs [1].

We have yet to see a largely llm driven language implementation, but it is surely possible. I imagine it would be easier to tell the llm to instead translate the Java implementation to whatever language you need. A vibe-coded language could do major damage to a companies data.

_dark_matter_··on Real engineering failures instead of success stories
Whether or not it's AI written, these very vague stories are not useful.
_dark_matter_··on Amazon cuts 16k jobs
You want Victorian healthcare? Or privacy? No air conditioning? Dirty air? Horse shit everywhere? No different, people stink, can't shower, and it takes hours of labor to wash clothes without a washing machine?
_dark_matter_··on The tech market is fundamentally fucked up and AI is just a scapegoat
Almost always they start by having connections that hire them (old colleagues, former friends, etc.), building out those connections (conference talks, doing really good work, writing high quality blogs), and then if you're lucky, some word of mouth.
_dark_matter_··on A few random notes from Claude coding quite a bit last few weeks
Your docs are a contact. You can verify that contract using integration tests
_dark_matter_··on The bachelor tax – what it costs in taxes to be single
I think there's just not enough money in the county to induce more babies. The cost would be a shock. Anyone wealthy enough to shoulder the cost would fight so hard against it, it would never stand a chance. IMO the number is probably something like $10k per year per kid. Foster Care pays somewhere between 8k-12k.
_dark_matter_··on Heathrow scraps liquid container limit
Why would they? Because they are about to do the thing they planned to do for months or years? Because they may be risking their own life? Because they're worried about getting caught rather than following through? Because no matter how prepared they are they have never done that EXACT scenario before at that exact airport with those exact people? Because the human mind is a lizard brain even with training and preparation?

Still not a perfect systems, other countries manage this part much better (I've heard Israel is especially good at it, but I don't have direct evidence).
