_cenw··on Show HN: RomM – An open-source, self-hosted ROM manager and player
I use igir for this. It's a bit of work to setup though.

(Pro tip: Use the {datName} template token instead of --dir-dat-name if you use clean with single DAT files, or the "only delete from folders we touched" rule doesn't apply, learned the hard way).

_cenw··on If it works, it's not AI: a commercial look at AI startups (1999)
I wonder if LLMs will ever not be AI. Applications using LLMs that aren't terrible experiences are so because they replace large parts of things people say LLMs can do with vector databases, glorified if conditions and brute force retrying.

I coincidentally can run local LLMs (7900 XTX, 24 GB), but I almost never want to because the output of raw LLMs is trash.

_cenw··on A proposal to restrict sites from accessing a users’ local network
If you're going cross-domain with XHR, I'd hope you're mostly sending json request bodies and not forms.

Though to be fair, a lot of web frameworks have methods to bind named inputs that allow either.

_cenw··on MinIO Removes Web UI Features from Community Version, Pushes Users to Paid Plans
The diff contains this addition:

    fetch("https://dl.min.io/server/minio/agplv3-ack", {
      mode: "no-cors",
    })
This looks like it could be the "you downloaded the Virtual Box Expansion Pack from a corporate IP" Oracle playbook to me. Certainly falls under "mistreating the user".
_cenw··on MinIO Removes Web UI Features from Community Version, Pushes Users to Paid Plans
The only thing that'll be exponential about the future of AI is how fast their models collapse as all possible training data becomes at least partially synthetic and untainted words and code become the next low background steel.
_cenw··on I failed a take-home assignment from Kagi Search
Broadly, sure. You probably know who your audience is. But how'd I know who my recruiter is, individually. Is stalking their social media presence part of the exercise?
_cenw··on I failed a take-home assignment from Kagi Search
That would maybe be a valid point if the take home set any context beyond "it's an R&D project" and "minimal".

What do you want to achieve here, is this a throwaway prototype or would a user ever see this? Am I going to get picked on for imperfect UX or do you just want to see something. It becomes an exercise in guessing the reviewers sensibilities.

_cenw··on One-Click RCE in Asus's Preinstalled Driver Software
except there you spend several months walking an underpaid person in india who can barely use a shell though reproduction steps, get a confirm after all that work and the vendor still ignores you
_cenw··on Office is too slow, so Microsoft is making it load at Windows startup
You can also buy active DP to HDMI 2.1 adapters now - if you already have an HDMI KVM for instance. Cable Matters makes one.
_cenw··on Office is too slow, so Microsoft is making it load at Windows startup
I've ran Linux on my laptops since 2012, but avoided it for my desktop. I made the jump last week, and it only took slightly modifying my NixOS config (unlocking amdgpu for instance) for everything to just work. Oblivion Remaster runs noticeably better. Most multiplayer games also just work. And I'm no longer dealing with Windows search randomly not working, SMB connections stalling, random sleep issues... it all just works.

I had to invest a little into getting Sunshine to work with virtual displays (like Artemis), but even that took like a day and it'll be easy to set up if I ever need to reinstall.

_cenw··on Office is too slow, so Microsoft is making it load at Windows startup
It feels like different teams at Microsoft don't work with each other; they work against each other. I've noticed that too with Edge, it seems to be a competition at which team can put short term metrics (shopping and "creator following" vs privacy, shouldersurfing other search engines vs setting your search engine to bing) over respecting the user or engineering a coherent product.

Maybe stack ranking does create terrible culture.

_cenw··on We're building a dystopia just to make people click on ads [video]
They adopted declarativeWebRequest as the exclusive option for "content blocking" years ago, which requires an actual extension update to change blocked URLs. It allows for some optimizations that look nice on benchmarks, but in reality uBO makes the web faster by getting rid of a lot of tracking requests and javascript. Nobody in the ad industry cared, because Safari's share is so small and plastering Safari users that use this basic adblocking in ads probably would've made them move elsewhere.

Chrome doing this however changes the value of working around adblockers, because they now lack the ability to rapidly respond or match with code (that's not regex) or even reading a bit of the response.

_cenw··on We're building a dystopia just to make people click on ads [video]
Orion can. My guess is that it's just not a priority.
_cenw··on We're building a dystopia just to make people click on ads [video]
You are using the inferior way to block ads, which will continue to degrade as advertisers take advantage of Google killing synchronous blocking of web requests with Manifest v2.

_cenw··on Australian who ordered radioactive materials walks away from court
Yet another instance of "the public doesn't understand radiation".

Not even a month ago someone making a miniscule amount of uranium paint (on a channel that tries to recreate old pigments, most of them toxic) was accused of "creating a second Goiânia"[1].

_cenw··on Synology Lost the Plot with Hard Drive Locking Move
Honestly, you should just buy used enterprise drives. That they have hours on them is actually an upside, since most drives die either very early or very late into their expected lifespan. Our NAS is all Exos drives, no problems.

On the other hand, an NVMe drive from Crucial that lied about syncing data caused a write hole in ZFS and the associated pool broke to the point where we could only mount it with lots of flags in read only mode.

_cenw··on Synology Lost the Plot with Hard Drive Locking Move
Just keep in mind that Intel is keeping the total PCIe bandwidth out of those CPUs very constrained on purpose.
_cenw··on Synology Lost the Plot with Hard Drive Locking Move
Slapping Synology stickers on Seagate drives doesn't make them magically immune from being mislabeled out of refurbishment.

This is the same old tired argument Apple made about iPhone screens - complain about inferior aftermarket parts while doing everything in their power to not make the original parts available anywhere but AASPs. Except here we have the literal same parts with only a difference in the firmware vendor string.

_cenw··on Crows can recognize geometric regularity
Crows have surprisingly diverse taste and are capable of delaying gratification. We feed peanuts, kibble and cashews, and of those the cashews are considered so delicious, that some crows will refuse other food in hopes that we'll hand out cashews.

It's pretty cute how disappointed they can look when they realize you just threw a peanut.

_cenw··on Crows can recognize geometric regularity
Cashews are also great if you want to treat them. But we always bring kibble because most kibble is designed to be usable as a "sole" food covering a lot of nutritional needs at once. Extra points if you bring water and a flat bowl, they love to soften it up.
_cenw··on Crows can recognize geometric regularity
This is a real thing with cigarette butts. You just need to set up a vending machine where the crows can "redeem" their trash for treats and they'll even teach each other about it.
_cenw··on Crows can recognize geometric regularity
They've been known to both wash the salt off french fries and dip chicken nuggets in sauce packs.

Anyone who's ever argued that you shouldn't feed crows because it interferes with nature hasn't figured out that crows already adopted to urban human-inhabited environments, and feeding them quality food (cat kibble is cheap and works) is very much a net positive. If you see crows with white feathers, that's malnutrition, and you should give them something good to eat.

_cenw··on Deafening Silence from the Cybersecurity Industry
You mean the guy with the federal dismantlement and looting agency that sends credentials to federal IT systems to Russia, openly talks about a third term where people "wouldn't have to vote anymore", crashes the world economy based on some dubious theory about the US dollar being overvalued being the root of crumbling US power and is currently testing the waters to deport US citizens into an overseas prison nobody ever leaves after ignoring a supreme court order for doing the same to a legal resident (the most legal residents, since they targeted those going through the proper naturalization route) is business as usual?

Are you for real?

_cenw··on Deafening Silence from the Cybersecurity Industry
My experience is that everyone who's not close to any of these impacts is apathetic or treating events like they're reality TV, and even light attempts at convincing that there's more going on and that we might be in a historic and bad situation is met with hostility as if you just told someone's small kid that Santa isn't real.

At best they care about the financial parts of the news.

_cenw··on ICE director envisions Amazon-like mass deportation system
We're finally getting an answer to "how could such a thing happen". The answer is pretty simple: We think of history distinctly different than current events, ourselves as more enlightened and of our peers as more capable of calling it. And besides, it'd be really inconvenient if we actually had fascism, so why not ignore it until it's on the news or something.
_cenw··on ICE director envisions Amazon-like mass deportation system
"Someone is stealing my job" always works, even when the second most pressing issue is "nobody wants to work (this underpaid menial job) anymore".
