_cenw··on The highest quality codebase
This is it. It doesn't replace the higher level knowledge part very well.

I asked Claude to fix a pet peeve of mine, spawning a second process inside an existing Wine session (pretty hard if you use umu, since it runs in a user namespace). I asked Claude to write me a python server to spawn another process to pass through a file handler "in Proton", and it proceeded a long loop of trying to find a way to launch into an existing wine session from Linux with tons of environment variables that didn't exist.

Then I specified "server to run in Wine using Windows Python" and it got more things right. Except it tried to use named pipes for IPC. Which, surprise surprise, doesn't work to talk to the Linux piece. Only after I specified "local TCP socket" it started to go right. Had I written all those technical constraints and made the design decisions in the first message it'd have been a one-hit success.

_cenw··on Rubio orders return to Times New Roman font over 'wasteful' Calibri
Calibri always has a cheap look to it when I see it, just because I'll assume someone didn't change their default font. I think I felt the same about TNR when it was the default too, but Calibri has quite a bit more character that seems to build up "font fatigue" more easily.

Not woke though. There are many better modern choices that are not TNR.

This is cool, but also broken. If you click "raw" after pressing y without reloading, the link is still to a tag/branch.
_cenw··on GitHub Actions has a package manager, and it might be the worst
See also this excellent video essay by fasterthanlime: GitHub Actions Feels Bad[1].

I'm pretty sure it contains the exact line of it being "deeply confused about being a package manager".

At least they were available when Front Door was down!
_cenw··on Cloudflare was down
Always been there. But it seems to be creeping into institutions that previously cared over the past few years, accelerating in the last.
_cenw··on Cloudflare was down
That's the 30% vibe code they promised us.

Cynicism aside, something seems to be going wrong in our industry.

_cenw··on MinIO is now in maintenance-mode
MinIO the corporation is not the sole licencor of MinIO the source code. They could sue and probably enforce compliance, but they can't just revoke the license like it is an overly restrictive commercial EULA.
_cenw··on Micron Announces Exit from Crucial Consumer Business
AI being a useful component in our futures (depending on how much as a society we'll shun slop) and the current scale of AI investment being a line-go-up bubble are complementary, not exclusive.

It really is just dotcom all over again.

_cenw··on Micron Announces Exit from Crucial Consumer Business
Hynix also started selling consumer SSDs with "SK Hynix" branding like 2-3 years ago. I guess we'll see how long that lasts.
_cenw··on Micron Announces Exit from Crucial Consumer Business
Enterprise as in the level of support and care these products will come with, as opposed to consumer or business.
_cenw··on Zig quits GitHub, says Microsoft's AI obsession has ruined the service
Seeing the decline of GitHub in Actions is technically correct, but Actions was always broken. We tried getting self-hosted runners to work super early before there was a proper ephemeral mode (just an officially unsupported race-condition-y --once flag). It sucked. That code can't produce a consistent status code, constantly failed to connect to its scheduler with obscure Azure error codes and had so many races with accepting and timing out jobs. Runners wouldn't get new jobs, jobs would sit there for an hour and then time out, runners would just die and need to be re-provisioned (we used ephemeral VMs in a GCP instance group). This is all because Actions is actually Azure DevOps Pipelines rebranded.

Compared to then this product is downright mature now. And also, there always were people at GitHub who delivered crappy products outside the core that most people working on FOSS got to see. Enterprise Cloud has a ton of sharp edges and things that make you ask "WHY" out loud. Notifications with SAML enabled are broken in countless ways (I have 0 out of 12 notifications right now), newly onboarded users are encouraged to click a "request copilot" button that sends emails to admins you can't disable, policy toggles that used to do one thing get split up and not defaulted properly. The last two in particular are just dark pattern hacks to get people to use Copilot. In an enterprise product.

I haven't used GHES, but I imagine it's worse.

_cenw··on Games using anti-cheats and their compatibility with GNU/Linux or Wine/Proton
The only games on that list that doesn't run on Linux I can spot are Call of Duty and Fortnite.
_cenw··on Games using anti-cheats and their compatibility with GNU/Linux or Wine/Proton
The worst thing about League was that Riot added it retroactively after years of effort to patch Wine to work with League's weird quirky code. It was the only game that I always remember having a custom Wine build in Lutris even as far back as the early 2010s.

It also would be completely unnecessary if they fixed their servers.

_cenw··on Games using anti-cheats and their compatibility with GNU/Linux or Wine/Proton
Or you could miss out on like... 5 games. Competitive games on a controller would be a much larger trade off than dual booting to me.
_cenw··on Bazzite: Operating System for Linux gaming
Cheating creates two problems. Obvious cheats aiming to upset other players and subtle cheats that don't want to be noticed as such. Now, I'm not saying it doesn't matter if people cheat as long as nobody notices or that competitive integrity is not important, but the first category is a much more immediate threat for most games and easy to detect. On a server analyzing locally recorded sampled demos.
_cenw··on Bazzite: Operating System for Linux gaming
I don't doubt it, but I actually really hate that the build system is a bunch of bash scripts, github actions and assuming the previous stage builds fine. Especially when the custom image forkable repo has an action commented out to squeeze more temporary storage out of GHA hosted runners because some images don't even fit on those (like the gnome-deck). I wish the entire setup was a little more decoupled and maybe allowed you to build multiple stages in one go so the entire system was more "forkable" and less spread out. I went on a bit of a wild goose chase trying to build Bazzite without the Firefox RPM removed (rpm-ostree doesn't like adding and removing and then adding packages again).

I did voice that concern in some Bazzite-related spaces before and it felt like it got brushed off with a weird undertone.

_cenw··on Petition to formally recognize open source work as civic service in Germany
RMS famously had no problem with dual licensing. The definition should. None of the GPL licenses protect from bad stewardship focused on maintaining commercial viability of some product either.

You're ignoring the subtext of the comment above yours.

> Too much psychology talk in every day life, everyone is traumatised and has unresolved issues etc. That may be, but I wish we would handle it all more privately...

Their problem isn't with the language itself, but how it is handled in public. That point doesn't really translate if you pivot to creating an environment conductive to mental health.

_cenw··on Petition to formally recognize open source work as civic service in Germany
To a degree. But the corporate interest is spread across enough organisations that it's much harder for the Linux kernel to reject a patch solely because it's good for business, whereas a lot of corporate open source projects - even those with an OSI approved license - will actively refuse to merge code that competes with their commercial offering or simply isn't submitted by a customer. Hashicorp already operated like this long before they switched to BSL. Unfortunately having a project owned by a foundation isn't a good indicator either, because I know of at least one Apache project where the entire membership is one company, the CEO is the project chair and code is sometimes just dropped into repos in one huge commit.
_cenw··on Petition to formally recognize open source work as civic service in Germany
The petition should use a more restricted definition, because the OSI definition only deals with the way software is developed and distributed, not how software contributes to the common good. That a lot of open source software is foundational to how most other software is written is incidental for the OSI, but important for this recognition.

In fact I see no reason why you can't already get this recognition in the existing legal framework by creating an association with a specific scope.

Half of these aren't people talking about mental health problems, but preconditions for mental health. That's your problem?

There's really no need. I was looking for an Android app for a particular purpose, and Claude just regurgitated the app's marketing page, including the claim about Play Store ratings (which was wrong or very outdated). Getting into the pool of products might be a bit harder and you might need to set some some organic looking influencer blogs and such. More fuel for the dead internet.

The Winlator-releated ecosystem already works pretty well, there just isn't a good frontend or integration for it yet. That's what is really exciting here.

Gamehub is a proprietary app by a Chinese controller manufacturer with some suspicious behavior and several LGPL violations that unfortunately works much better then the alternatives. Funnily enough their CDN endpoint is called "bigeyes", which when researching a bit was apparently their (failed) effort to bring x86 VR to ARM almost 10 years ago. Some people have "debloated" the app, but it seems very amateur hour to me and the process isn't very transparent (the GitHub repo is just a readme)

There's also GameNative, which seems promising, but is very buggy.

And Winlator itself, which is a mess of tons of tunables and different forks that I really don't have the patience for when PC handhelds exist today and have a much better ecosystem.

It's also a great (VC-funded) business opportunity to become the technology provider of such action. There are a few of these non-profit fronts with "technology partners" behind them that are lobbying for legislation like the UK Online Safety Act or Chat Control. Thorn is the most well-known one, but one particularly interesting one is SafeToNet, who after not getting a government contract for CSAM scanning (and purging their marketing for it from the web - you can still find it under the name SafeToWatch) have pivoted to just selling a slightly altered version of their app preloaded on a $200 smartphone to concerned parents - with a 2.5x price premium.

One might even go so far to insinuate that they were the party responsible for the CSAM being there to begin with. Wouldn't be the first time someone weaponized such content. I remember at least one case were a steamer was "digitally" swatted using a Dropbox upload link.

This is a huge problem in the Chrome Web Store and Google is doing very little about it. If you ever made an extension that is even just a little popular, expect to get acquisition offers by people who want to add malicious features somewhere between click fraud, residential IP services or even password stealers.
