_cbsz··on Buttery smooth Emacs (2016)
He doesn't say it flickered all the time for everyone:

> The amount of flicker you actually see depends on things like whether redisplay optimized the last update, your video driver, and the purity of your soul.

_cbsz··on In Tuesday's Vote, California Opts for Year-Round Daylight Saving
"So You Want To Abolish Time Zones" (https://qntm.org/abolish) has a good exploration of the issues with that.

> based on the way the government is set up, rural votes have disproportionate power, and for this reason the LDP has a tendency to pander to rural interests

Is there a Western government that isn't set up this way? You could write this same blurb about the United States. I would be very curious to hear about what happens when rural areas have political power consummate with their population instead of with their land area or with the mere fact of their historical existence. (For example, does it look less or more "fair"? Are there unexpected consequences, like maybe further depopulation of rural areas?)

_cbsz··on A History of .NET Runtimes
The recent Software Engineering Daily podcast on "Unity and WebAssembly" mentions that Unity has a .NET to C++ toolchain. Is that some kind of stock Mono feature, or is that another .NET runtime?

_cbsz··on Should you learn C to “learn how the computer works”?
Why do you claim that local variables and function calls are specific to C? They seem to be very popular among programming languages in general.
_cbsz··on Should you learn C to “learn how the computer works”?
Would it be fair to say that it will teach you how to dictate the memory layout of your program, which is key to taking proper advantage of "cache locality, cache lines, prefetching, etc..."?
_cbsz··on Should you learn C to “learn how the computer works”?
ARM64 uses regular loads and stores to access the stack, I believe. It also is one of the architectures with branch-and-link. https://community.arm.com/processors/b/blog/posts/using-the-...
_cbsz··on Should you learn C to “learn how the computer works”?
> We spend a lot of silicon forcing our computers to "work like C does" (the specification for how registers work may as well read "we need to run C code very quickly no matter how much register renaming costs us in silicon"

Can you elaborate? I thought I knew what register renaming was supposed to do, but I don't see the tight connection between register renaming and C.

_cbsz··on The Dark Arts of Advanced and Unsafe Rust Programming
IMO title should at least contain "The Rustonomicon"; "The Dark Arts of Advanced and Unsafe Rust Programming" is the subtitle. I wouldn't have clicked through if I had known that the link was to this document.
_cbsz··on Riot Games Approach to Anti-Cheat
Seems like this would devolve into a market for add-ons for your game. Let's assume that this game becomes popular. I'd claim that then most players would passively consume the leading open source solution(s), which are likely to outperform whatever any one person can do working in secret (or just tweaking the leading open source solutions). Software is copyable -- I don't think you can give a mechanical advantage to being the author of the software instead of a script kiddie.
_cbsz··on The Rise of Edible Insect Farming
I don't think that your conclusion follows from your argument. You could say the same thing about directly eating vegetables -- they can be fed to animals we normally eat (e.g., cattle).

More directly to your point, isn't there significant energy inefficiency from eating higher on the food chain?

_cbsz··on People are recycling too much garbage, and it's threatening the industry
The system in the Bay Area is especially broken because it is built to nudge everyone to put as much as possible in recycling/compost. We've got very limited trash space, expensive upgrades to larger trash bins, and huge recycling/compost bins.
_cbsz··on Into the Breach’s interface was a nightmare to make and the key to its greatness
Try a different mech squad. Blitzkrieg, for example, is vaguely similar to the Rift Walkers in composition but the mechs have much more specialized roles.

> if you want to scare yourself later go play with browning butter

what's scary about browning butter? It seemed to work great for me on the first try. Whole kitchen smelled delicious, and so were the chocolate chip cookies I was browning it for.

_cbsz··on A Brainfuck to WebAssembly compiler and playground
Moreover, the Lost Kingdom interpreter will expand the memory arbitrarily as it encounters > instructions, whereas the bf2wasm interpreter has a fixed limit of 16384 4-byte cells according to its documentation.
_cbsz··on A Brainfuck to WebAssembly compiler and playground
Looks like the default Lost Kingdom BF interpreter uses 8-bit cells, whereas the bf2wasm compiler uses 32-bit cells. This matters in Brainfuck; choosing the "wrong" one of the idioms [-] and [+] for zeroing a cell gets worse as cells get bigger. Maybe if you tweaked the bf2wasm compiler to use 8-bit cells?
_cbsz··on Making Sense of Super Smash Bros. Melee
Title would make more sense if it was "Making Sense of Super Smash Bros. Melee". Not everyone plays this game.
_cbsz··on Transputer
If you're interested in this, http://www.zachtronics.com/tis-100/ is a "game" about programming a non-existent architecture that looks inspired by transputers.
_cbsz··on Silicon Valley Software Engineer Salaries by Experience Level
> These numbers are about 60% more than corporate salaries where I live, but the cost of living in SV is roughly 3-10x greater.

Your point doesn't necessarily follow from your argument. For example, if salaries where you live were $1,000,000 per year and the cost of living was $10,000, you would gain $600,000 per year in salary and lose up to $90,000 per year in costs, for a net profit of $510,000.

Can we get this clickbait title changed? I even skimmed the article and I still don't know what "the most revolutionary thing about self-driving cars" is supposed to be.

_cbsz··on Options vs. Cash
> he could have exercised his shares and gotten several hundred thousand, but he would've needed to pay about $100k in taxes beforehand. Since he didn't have that money, he couldn't exercise the options.

I feel like at least a phone call to a bank would be in order at that point. If it's that simple, surely some sort of mutually agreeable loan could be worked out.
