_bohm··on Uber will feature NYC taxi cabs in its app under groundbreaking new deal
Fingers crossed this doesn't seriously impact the availability of taxis which can be hailed from the street as usual. For most trips, hailing a taxi is far cheaper than Uber.
_bohm··on Alexandria Search
I've found that their content is often inaccurate or written by people who come across as novices. I actually emailed them to correct an inaccuracy in one of their articles once, which they did, so kudos to them for that.
_bohm··on Epic Games acquires Bandcamp
I'd prefer seeing Bandcamp continue to grow and prosper as its own company
_bohm··on Upcoming new HTTP QUERY method
From the paragraph above:

> The non-normative examples in this section make use of a simple, hypothetical plain-text based query syntax based on SQL with results returned as comma-separated values. This is done for illustration purposes only. Implementations are free to use any format they wish

_bohm··on Faster CPython (2021) [pdf]
It depends on the runtime environment, no? For example, Node supports worker threads

_bohm··on I am a New York City public high school student. The situation is beyond control
I encourage you to go compare the plots of cases and deaths in NYC over the past 3 weeks and reconsider this statement.
_bohm··on Russia sends troops to Kazakhstan to put down deadly uprising
I'm confused by this question. Russia is one of the world's largest oil exporters, is it not?

_bohm··on Twitter acquires Quill
My company uses Quill. They've added a big yellow banner announcing the shutdown to the top of the UI.
_bohm··on Why Co–Star Uses Haskell
The point of my comment really wasn't to denigrate anyone's belief system or to prop up empirical basis as an absolute standard for establishing the veracity or value of a claim.

The parent commenter expressed concern that people holding these unsubstantiated belief systems as truth was inflicting real harm to society. My point was to say that if this is a real concern, why are we singling out astrology as a punching bag? Basically all major religions entail beliefs which are unsubstantiated by empirical evidence. Do we as individuals really have the capacity harbor ill will towards anyone who chooses to believe things outside what can be verified empirically? I don't!

Your belief system may be incompatible with Astrology, and it may possess a richer intellectual tradition than Astrology, but this alone is insufficient to convince me that the faith-based beliefs of one system are inherently superior or more true than the other.

_bohm··on Why Co–Star Uses Haskell
Is it that clear-cut? My impression is not that astrology as a practice has a rigid hierarchical structure, nor that the people disseminating horoscopes and the like do not believe it themselves.
_bohm··on Why Co–Star Uses Haskell
I feel you, but at the end of the day I don't think astrology as a belief system is any wackier or more harmful than most mainstream religions. And my capacity for holding a grudge against people for having beliefs that lack an empirical basis is not very high.
_bohm··on Why Co–Star Uses Haskell
I place zero stock in it as far as decision making or understanding myself/others goes, but it also doesn't really make me angry in the way that it seems to for a lot of other people. I think it's often quite fun to compare astrology charts or ask someone their sign as an icebreaker when getting to know them, etc.
_bohm··on Firefox 94
FWIW you are absolutely free to change your new tab page to something else
_bohm··on Police can’t demand you reveal your phone passcode then tell a jury you refused
Rough rides are an example of a fairly well documented practice [0]. I personally know someone who was taken on one.

DC does not want to be a part of Maryland
_bohm··on Python 3.11: “Zero cost” exception handling
This fails to raise an error if there is more than one object matching the given filters
_bohm··on Shenandoah in OpenJDK 17: Sub-millisecond GC pauses
My experience with Go is that it's quite a bit more stripped back of a language than Java. Could you explain what you mean by this?
_bohm··on Show HN: Time travel debugger for web development
lol, now this is the kind of marketing that speaks to me
_bohm··on Show HN: Web browser to help programmers think clearly
Looks really cool and I'd love to give it a shot! Is this intended to be open source? It looks like the associated repo [0] only has a README and some releases with the Mac installers in the assets.

_bohm··on Clickbait is unreasonably effective [video]
or maybe: "rationalizing his use of clickbait as a means of coping with the weight it places on his conscience"
_bohm··on Improved C syntax highlighting for Vim
It is not, but there's an installation and configuration guide here [0] that I found pretty easy to follow

_bohm··on Improved C syntax highlighting for Vim
AFAIK vimscript after/syntax/ files still work fine with neovim. But if you're on neovim 0.5+ I would recommend using the tree-sitter highlighting integration instead :)
_bohm··on Beads: Computer language and toolchain

_bohm··on Immudb 1.0 – open-source, immutable database with SQL and verified timetravel
Huh? Dead tuples are not queryable in Postgres.
_bohm··on Faster CPython Ideas – Issue Tracker for Faster CPython Project
Presumably development will be taking place on this organization's fork of cpython?

Looks like they've also got a repo with some tools for profiling bytecode:

_bohm··on Instagram ads Facebook won't show you
It hurts to admit, but I would probably actually buy one of these
_bohm··on History of Techno
I'm happy to acknowledge that there are many subgenres of electronic music, including some of my favorites, which truly were grown and blossomed in Europe.

I took issue with your original comment because of the claim that electronic music is basically an ethnically white, European phenomenon. The SV->Europe comparison would be apt here if Europe were indeed _the_ mecca for all electronic music. This is obviously false unless you ignore huge swaths of the history or massively constrain your definition of what constitutes electronic music.

If you use the charts to measure what's happening at the underground/local level of any place, you're never going to get a good picture. Based on the charts (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_European_number-one_ai...) it would appear that Europeans seldom listened to music written by Europeans in the 90s!

_bohm··on History of Techno
For someone who seems to have been around the scene for quite a while, you come off as woefully uneducated on the history of electronic music.

Electronic music is and has always been an international phenomenon. Innovations happen due to cross-pollination of styles, not because specifically white Europeans "mature" it.

The Techno that blew up in Europe was initially imported from African Americans. Jungle/DNB was born out of mixing UK Hardcore with Jamaican Reggae/Dancehall/Dub music.

Footwork, Club, Bounce, Industrial, House, Electro, to name a few, are all styles that were prevalent on dancefloors in the US during the time you characterize it as "all about stale rehashes of guitar-based genres". All of these styles are woven into the DNA of the new underground generation. Nobody "owns" electronic music, and the scene is so much better when people stop claiming that anyone does.

_bohm··on The real reason to end the death penalty
> with a system of private prisons (another fantasy, given the current trend of increasing the government size, instead of reducing it), maybe someone would be able to turn a profit and make it work.

Both prison labor and private prisons are absolutely a thing in the United States today. As I understand, prison labor is illegal in privately operated prisons. However, state-run prisons are allowed to use prison labor to manufacture goods and sell them to private entities for profit it many US jurisdictions.

Many people find this practice objectionable because it creates a profit-based incentive for states to issue more prison sentences and to make them longer.
