_bohm··on Mourning Google
GCP started turning a profit last year.
_bohm··on Python 3.13 Gets a JIT
Doesn't this already exist in IronPython?
_bohm··on Welcome to the ad-free internet
You joke but I’m pretty sure I experienced this recently on a flight. Being shown ads when you have the ability to opt out is one thing. Being shown ads when you’re a captive audience in an already relatively high stress environment seems outright villainous to me.
_bohm··on Most companies using AI are 'lighting money on fire,' says Matthew Prince
Yeah, the article really has no more information than the headline
_bohm··on Several piracy-related arrests spark fears of high-level crackdown
> technically it’s unethical.

For some technical definition of ethicality on which I'm sure we can all agree :)

_bohm··on Building a Streaming Platform in Go for Postgres
I have extensive experience with Go, Python, Java, and Scala. I write Scala and Java at my day job, and find I am far more productive in Go than either of these.

Your framing of the issue in terms of infrastructure projects vs. applications seems bizarre and simplistic. For example, one of the areas where Go shines is in highly concurrent, io-bound, networked services. Many examples of good use cases for Go in the wild: Kubernetes, CockroachDB, TiDB, etc.

_bohm··on US Government IT contractor could face death penalty over espionage charges
Or perhaps they just gained physical access to the device he used after arresting him.
_bohm··on PostgreSQL 16
Not quite true. Regular VACUUM marks dead tuples as available for re-use, so the system can overwrite the dead tuples with fresh ones after a VACUUM. VACUUM FULL completely rewrites and repacks the table.

_bohm··on Apple ditches the Lightning connector in favor of USB-C after 11 years
Yup, they work. It really just seems like quite an unnecessary frustration to have to bring one everywhere, and to not be able to charge my phone while listening to music
_bohm··on Apple ditches the Lightning connector in favor of USB-C after 11 years
Yeah I'm not really a fan of wireless headphones, personally. I'd just like to use my DT 770s to listen to music on my phone without having to bring an extra adapter with me everywhere, and while being able to charge the phone at the same time if necessary.
_bohm··on Apple ditches the Lightning connector in favor of USB-C after 11 years
Was really hoping they'd add back the headphone jack with this change, but no such luck this time around :(
_bohm··on UK pulls back from clash with Big Tech over private messaging
Some anonymous entity has been putting up posters in my neighborhood decrying Apple for "allowing" CSAM to be stored on iCloud. Very creepy propaganda campaign.
_bohm··on Free and open source software projects are in transition
By becoming the de facto entry point into the internet, Google's existence has spawned a horde of SEO spam sites that dilute and push down real content on the internet.
_bohm··on Databricks Strikes $1.3B Deal for Generative AI Startup MosaicML
Where do you get the $400m figure? Just a couple weeks ago Bloomberg ran an article stating their revenue is >$1B
_bohm··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
The most outlandish and obvious scam advertisements I have seen (by far) have all been on Instagram
_bohm··on Datomic is Free
Nubank bought Cognitect/Datomic a few years back, so they own it I believe
_bohm··on How can some infinities be bigger than others?
The reals are a superset of the integers, and a bijective mapping cannot be formed between the two, thus there are "more" elements in the set of reals than the set of integers.
_bohm··on Neovim 0.9
For file explorer and fuzzy finder, neovim does inherit netrw and vimgrep from vim. I use the netrw all the time and have never felt the need to install a file explorer plugin. vimgrep, less so since I have telescope with fzf and ripgrep, but it does exist!
_bohm··on TikTok Congress Hearing
Can anyone shed light on what exactly "banning TikTok" would look like implementation-wise in the US? Would ISPs be required to block them at the network level? App stores forced to remove the app? Is there any precedent for something like this?
_bohm··on Accenture would cut 19,000 jobs
From the article:

> More than half of the layoffs will affect staff at its non-billable corporate functions

So presumably a lot (most?) of these laid off individuals are not devs

_bohm··on GitHub Copilot X – Sign up for technical preview
Yeah I think there's a lot of sense in that. I think it's likely that the ability to use these tools in a disciplined fashion will grow to be a significant differentiator between more effective and less effective programmers. The former taking a considered approach to design and then using the tools where they're a real force multiplier e.g., writing unit tests, and the latter prompting them to spit out large swaths of code they would have previously written by hand: "write an endpoint that does X".
_bohm··on GitHub Copilot X – Sign up for technical preview
I see. My impression based on this press release is that GitHub is planning on marketing this more to teams using their paid plan though. It seems like this would be a non-issue for organizations using private repositories?
_bohm··on GitHub Copilot X – Sign up for technical preview
I have been using it on a fairly large project, and in practice I find it rarely, if ever, spits out anything other than something that resembles what I would have written next anyways, taking context clues from the file I'm editing.
_bohm··on GitHub Copilot X – Sign up for technical preview
Could you explain your reasoning? You expect that these tools will create more work to get from point A to point B rather than less?
_bohm··on Bandcamp Unionizes

thanks for the chuckle

_bohm··on Sanders calls for minimum salary of $60000 for public school teachers
Right, seems rather difficult!
_bohm··on Sanders calls for minimum salary of $60000 for public school teachers
Difficult how? A relative of mine is a teacher in a high-poverty area and it seems like a very taxing job. Regularly having to deal with children who are emotionally or physically abused, or who recently immigrated and don't even speak english, and trying to teach them math. I daresay this is not a set of challenges most software engineers I've met would be well equipped to handle.
_bohm··on Americans duped into losing $10B by illegal Indian call centres in 2022: report
I understand the impulse to feel this way, but redistributing wealth through criminal syndicates who likely contribute very little real value to the Indian economy is not the way to go.
_bohm··on Boring Python: Code quality
Agree in principle, but I'm giving advice to someone who programs on occasion and is primarily concerned with their programs breaking due to dependency version upgrades when they come back to them after a little while.
_bohm··on Boring Python: Code quality
For your dependency/versioning issue, use a virtualenv per-project and pin your dependency versions in requirements.txt
