_ah··on Ask HN: How can I stay gainfully employed when I just want to “coast” as a SWE?
The only employment I know of where you can "coast" - have a decent life without working too hard - are the skilled trades. They're in demand (not enough workers), but they don't really change. Think Plumbing, Electrical, etc.

If you go the hard labor route you will break your body eventually and need that retirement or pension. So plan ahead.

If you go the management route you're in good shape for employment and retirement (people don't really change), but you usually have to start by being good at whatever you're managing.

You have chosen a career with high rates of change and disruption, but you're hoping to avoid changing and being disrupted. This is not a winning solution. You may be able to survive for a few years in a lagging employer (large boring corporations, government agencies, certain non-technical family businesses). But eventually, the disruption will come for you too, and you'll find that your cushy job has disappeared and you've been replaced by a $10/mo SaaS.

You need to change something. You can upgrade your mindset to work in a high-churn industry or you can shift your skills and expectations to a low churn industry. But I guarantee it won't get any easier as you get older.

_ah··on Suez Canal says traffic in channel resumes after stranded ship refloated
Wow this is the coolest thing I've learned this week.
_ah··on Suez canal blocked by a massive ship
...which is interesting. Two unrelated ships lost power at the same location on the same day? Curious.

This is a Jobs program, not a Space program. It's working as intended! Most politicians don't care about Space, but Jobs programs are great for re-election and basically unkillable.

Think of it this way: the Jobs spend was going to happen anyway. But instead of high-speed trains to nowhere (hello California!) we get rovers on Mars. Wasteful, but not a total waste.

_ah··on Ask HN: Am I being taken advantage of by my company?
1. It depends on how much that 1.1% is worth.

2. It depends on whether that amount is worth your sanity and family life.

_ah··on Cricut Backs Down – Cutting Machines
Standard tactic: delay enforcement for ~1 yr to let the publicity die down, but carry on with the plan on a slight delay. "We know you all hate this idea, but we think that what you really hate is the fact we sprang it on you with no warning. We're still doing to do it eventually though."

I almost have to admire it. As a society we have distressingly short memories.

_ah··on Ask HN: List of failed Smart Fridge startups?
This works easily with ubiquitous RFID. If we eventually transition to fully automated grocery checkout we may end up in this future by default.
_ah··on Is it a red flag when companies search for [language] engineer?
C++ (with funky pointer math) is a specialized skill. Looking for that specific skill is not unreasonable.
_ah··on Questionable Value Proposition(QVP)
This doesn't work.

The company will be valued primarily on the final year's revenue. To be a "good deal", the total amount of revenue over 3 years must be <= 8% of the valuation. Since companies are normally valued at 3-5x revenue, that means that the final year's revenue represents 20%-33% of the valuation. No one will ever pay 20% of the value of the company to own 8%.

I always liked the idea of budget-based taxation, similar to the way that condos do special assessments:

1. Decide how much money the state needs in taxes to fund the various pieces of infrastructure (roads, schools, etc).

2. Value everyone's property. Divide up the tax proportionally based on property value. If your house is worth twice as much as your neighbor, you should pay twice as much tax.

The interesting thing about this approach is that it creates a stable tax income rate for the state and mostly eliminates market fluctuations. Did the economy boom? Ok great, your house is now worth 50% more but so is your neighbor's house, so the ratio is the same and you pay the same tax as the prior year. Same mechanism works in reverse during a crash.

With this method, the tax paid directly relates to the budget. Spending too much? It's not the economy's fault, it's yours: maybe try voting for different initiatives (or representatives) next time.

This also aligns the incentives for older residents. If an area is economically static you should expect city budgets (and taxes) to increase roughly in line with inflation. If the area grows and develops and becomes a much more interesting place to live, it's no longer the same city. You have the option to pay for those increased services or you can move... similar to the way that you'll pay more rent if the landlord remodels your apartment building. But in fact, the effect is moderated: a house built in 1930 will probably be less valuable than new 2021 construction so the hold-out retiree should see taxes that increase at a rate less than the average.

_ah··on Ask HN: Why are we still so bad a weather forecasting?
I had a meteorologist explain this to me once: weather forecasting is highly complex, near to an art form. It's not yet possible to model the forecast with precise enough rules that it can be done by machine within a reasonable compute budget. In addition, as others have noted, variations in topography can create many microclimates, so that the forecast for a given region is actually the average forecast for all the area within that region.

Very accurate forecasts for a specific spot are possible, but today require a trained meteorologist. In practice, the only time people are willing to pay for this expertise are when they're running an airport, planning a war, or launching / landing a spacecraft.

Perhaps in the future we'll have enough compute power on demand for anyone to accurately model on-demand forecasts for specific spots.

_ah··on Ask HN: What field has the most objective, quantitative evaluation of skill?
Measurement-based Olympic sports (100 meter dash, speed skating, high jump, etc.) The winner is not only determined by pure physical capacity, but is a result of all the skill in training and mental preparation before and during the event.
_ah··on Ask HN: What technology made your jaw drop the first time you used it?
1. MP3. I had played with audio before (.wav and .rm, for those who remember). The first time I heard the audio quality out of a 4 MB audio .mp3 file was shocking.

2. HDR. I saw a demo monitor back in the early 2000s. It was a 12-inch display with a full array of white LED backlights, individually addressable. They had it running next to a normal monitor and the difference in dynamic range was unbelievable. The company that made that demo unit was ultimately purchased by Dolby.

3. VR. I got a demo of the HTC Vive when it was still pre-market and could not believe the lack of latency and true sense of realism. It was a mind-expanding moment.

_ah··on Ask HN: What are my chances of finding a technical co-founder?
First, I'll say +1 to the other commenters here encouraging you to develop the idea on your own first before trying to bring in other people.

But let's say you're going to ignore all of that and still try to find a partner first. Your advertisement gives me zero confidence that you have an actual business here. Your idea is: a personal finance budgeting tool, but "fun and easy to use" and based on how you personally manage your finances. I have so many questions! And as a former Product Manager you should have answers:

• What specifically is wrong with existing personal finance tools on the market? What is the killer feature that makes yours better? Have you tried https://lunchmoney.app/ ?

• Let's see those wireframes! User journeys! Something! Right now I'm left with the assumption that you've sketched out some login dialogs and a transaction list but haven't thought beyond that.

• Where's your user research? If you're looking for a cofounder, that implies that you have a thing that needs to be built. Do you know what that thing is? Have you validated with real people that this is a real problem they have? How many user interviews have you done? Again, my assumption is that you've done none of this.

• What will be your role in the business? How do you propose that you earn your 50% of the equity? Remember that "idea guy" is worth nothing... you need to bring sales chops, key relationships / industry credibility, recruiting ability, investment money, or some combination thereof.

• If you've actually thought through this stuff and don't want to reveal your secrets, why not? No one is going to copy you (probably), and you'll get key insight into your market. Before you can ever sell this to a consumer you need to sell it to your early partners.

Finally, remember that some of the best cofounder partnerships work because the people involved have prior history working together professionally. Which of your former co-workers could you convince to quit their job and join you? If none of them, why not? What would you need to do to strengthen your pitch? Do that.

_ah··on Ask HN: Dear tech managers, how to make you open my email?
I think you're going about this the wrong way. Your target audience gets tons of unsolicited email, most of which is trying to sell them something. You also are selling... not asking for their money (yet), but asking for their time.

You need to get warm introductions by other means. Use your professional network if you have it. Find out where some of these people hang out (industry events) and start chatting casually; this includes virtual events during COVID. Is there a support group or message board where these individuals go for support regarding the problem you're solving? Try helping them directly since they're actively seeking help. If the VP of data has a problem that your product solves, who does that person task with solving the problem? Target that person instead of the VP.

People with power at the top of an organization are difficult to reach, by design. The front door is locked: you need to find the side door.

Imagine you had a skin-care product that helps any person instantly look 10 years younger, and you want to offer this product to your favorite movie star. How would you reach this person? Not by sending email.

_ah··on Ask HN: What do you think of my strategy to change my field of work?
Many people waste time improving their weaknesses when they should be investing in their strengths. With enough effort you will be able to build your communication skills up to average... or you could invest where you are strong and become excellent.

Find a person that's amazing at sales and partner with them. You'll never be great at everything... do what only you can do and delegate the rest.

_ah··on Ask HN: Advice for a Soon to Be Father
At some point you'll have to discipline / correct behavior. Don't worry about screwing this up. You WILL screw up. Thankful, kids almost never learn the first time, so you'll have another chance to get it right. (and another, and another...)
_ah··on Ask HN: Can we ever escape Earth's gravity without using chemical propulsion?
Laser propulsion is an interesting / wacky idea. Don't know if it would actually work, but the core concept of keeping the energy source on the ground is an interesting one at least.

_ah··on Ask HN: If you could time travel, where would you go?
I'm pretty sure fire wasn't invented. More likely it was observed (lightning strike/ forest fire/ or similar) and then "kept alive".

The creation of fire with friction or flint spark would be an achievement, but not a terrible surprise for a person already familiar with the fire concept.

_ah··on What is the best programming dad joke?
I'll tell you a joke about TCP. If you don't get it I'll tell you again.
_ah··on Ask HN: Should I make a project open-source being a non-expert developer?
If you're building the app for free, and you're considering posting code to boost your resume, these both sound like academic pursuits consistent with your coursework. If you are currently enrolled in a 4-year university, take your code and ask for feedback from your professors. It's a unique learning opportunity and shouldn't cost anything extra.
_ah··on Cities are living entities always changing and adapting to new environments
This is also why NIMBYism is such a problem. No city is static... it is either growing or dying. Often both, simultaneously. If the ability to change is constrained, the city-organism is more likely to die as conditions change.

_ah··on Ask HN: How do you regain motivation after achieving financial success?
Maybe try physical training for a while. Become a triathlete. You'll either grow to love it, or discover after running in bad weather for the 1000th time that you have another thing you'd rather be working on. Plus exercise is always a good idea.
_ah··on Amazon Review Scam
Every time I see "Amazon's Choice", in my head I hear the tagline from The Outer Worlds:

" It's not the best choice, it's Spacer's Choice "

_ah··on How active noise cancellation for automotive works
My 2004 BMW did this mechanically: there was a tube connecting the passenger compartment with the air intake to pipe in that sweet engine noise. (There was a membrane inside to prevent actual airflow). Interestingly, the sound was actually too loud, so they stuffed some foam blocks in the resonator pipe to deaden the sound. But if you really wanted extra noise just remove the foam!

Counteroffer: Accept $200k for 10% of the company, you retain 90%. Use this 200k to build the product. Hire another developer for cash. Maybe 1-5% equity if you have to. The other glorified sales person (providing "inside knowledge and industry contact"... sounds dubious) can work as much as he wants on a pure-commission basis.

The CEO is expected to work for the company for free at a minimal level... that's probably all he was planning to do anyway. Any investor putting cash into a young company should be willing to leverage their own expertise and contacts to make that company successful, since that's the only way they will see a return on investment. You don't need another un-named executive at this stage.

One additional thought: you talk about an "interest-free investment" that can also be reduced by 40k/yr. That sounds like a loan. There's something odd going on here: why would anyone invest in a company they think is going to be huge, but then also allow you to buy them out for no interest? Something doesn't add up.

_ah··on Ask HN: Anyone would be interested in $10K funding for development?
You're fishing for deal flow, in competition with YC, on the YC board? Bold.
