_acme··on How a Reddit forum has become a lifeline to opioid addicts in the US
Did the doctor just say "Here, have these drugs" or did he/she prescribe the "potentially addictive" medication for a medical issue that should have been treated with that medication? Just not taking medication that your doctor thinks is necessary is not a good choice; you rarely know more than your doctor about the risk/reward profile of the medication.
_acme··on The $100B per year back pain industry is mostly a hoax
Do you have any evidence that this ever happens?
_acme··on Anti-addiction drug maker found a captive market in the criminal justice system
Is there any evidence of it working for this application other than your anecdotal experience?
_acme··on iOS 11 turns the iPad into a different machine
A right-click under NeXTSTEP brought up the full menu, which could also have sub-menus 'torn off' and pinned to the screen. The NeXTSTEP menu system was remarkably advanced and efficient.
_acme··on How Norwegian Air Upended Travel With Its Cheap Flights
In the US, this is often possible (see the Air Traffic Controllers situation), but I think in many countries in Europe, it's not always legal.
_acme··on How Norwegian Air Upended Travel With Its Cheap Flights
How would you "encourage US domestic carriers to change the way they operate so that they can match the Norwegian fares while retaining American jobs." I think the point is that that is impossible.

Their flights have layovers, such as at Gatwick for the flight being discussed.

Do you have some aversion to punctuation? Do you think it's cool not to capitalize or use paragraphs? I cannot read your post because of this.
_acme··on Switching to the Mutt Email Client
There are many organizations that use Gmail to host their email but do not allow third party email clients (i.e., IMAP and POP are turned off).
_acme··on Switching to the Mutt Email Client
If you don't cc people all the time, I can't believe you've used email for any business purpose.
_acme··on Switching to the Mutt Email Client
Has any organization (Fortune 500-style company) ever, in the history of the world, hosted its own NNTP server and expected employees to use it for communication? My guess is absolutely not.
_acme··on Switching to the Mutt Email Client
While arguably it's Gmail's fault, there are email clients, such as Gmail, that do not behave well with, or perhaps support at all, emails as attachments. When emailing people who use Gmail (as personal email or as the host of their work email), sending emails as attachments just doesn't work well.
_acme··on Switching to the Mutt Email Client
MS Outhouse? Really? Are you a 13 year old boy in 2003? Your message shows that you've never used email in a corporate setting, where people cc other people (who will need copies of the previous correspondence) all the time, and people might take you more seriously if you leave out the Micro$oft 'jokes'.
_acme··on America’s new tobacco crisis: The rich stopped smoking, the poor didn’t
I think people in developing countries would count as "poor" under this executive's analysis.
_acme··on America’s new tobacco crisis: The rich stopped smoking, the poor didn’t
You're not alone. I've never felt any effects from smoking cigarettes. I think the effects are incredibly minor compared to those of other substances, to the extent there are effects at all.
_acme··on America’s new tobacco crisis: The rich stopped smoking, the poor didn’t
Nicotine patches and gum are available without a prescription in the U.S. Did you intend to be sarcastic?
_acme··on Stop Pretending You’re Not Rich
Their research is only possible because they know they will be able to recoup costs in the US.
_acme··on Stop Pretending You’re Not Rich
Have you been to Cuba? It's more decrepit than one might expect.
_acme··on Stop Pretending You’re Not Rich
By what objective metric does France have the best healthcare in the world?
_acme··on Stop Pretending You’re Not Rich
Cuba does not have an effective healthcare system. I, for one, would like my hospital to have air conditioning and stable electricity, two things Cuban hospitals don't often have.
_acme··on Stop Pretending You’re Not Rich
Language and nationality would be two significant obstacles.
_acme··on Stop Pretending You’re Not Rich
Denmark and Sweden's top marginal tax rate is around 60%, which doesn't include value added taxes of about 10%.
_acme··on MIT Gets $140M Pledge from Anonymous Donor
Cambridge is certainly no where near as expensive as say, New York, so by your logic Columbia should be smaller than it is? A significant portion of a school's ranking (and overall prestige) is the difficulty of admission and the yield, so schools have an incentive not to expend indefinitely (plus there are other advantages of small/medium size).
_acme··on MIT Gets $140M Pledge from Anonymous Donor
That's not really difficult to find out. MIT's endowment is the sixth highest in the US. In 2016, it stood at just over $13 billion.
_acme··on Housing a prisoner in California costs more than a year at Harvard
No, that doesn't make any sense at all. What is 'gain time'? What does 'score out to' mean?
_acme··on iOS 11 Location Privacy: "Only While Using" is now always an option for users
Do you mean ex ante? A priori knowledge is that which is independent of experience, as in deduced from pure reason; it doesn't just mean 'in advance'.
_acme··on Apple's 2TB iCloud plan will only cost $10 a month
Amazon Drive doesn't provide filesystem integration? What is it by "filesystem integration" that you mean that it doesn't do (on MacOS and Windows, at least)?
_acme··on Tad, a tabular data viewer
Why is it sad that it's an Electron app? Can you articulate a reason why that's an automatic negative? Would you rather software, such as this, not exist than be Electron-based?
_acme··on Flight QF72: What happens when automation leaves pilots powerless?
Similarly, Captain Sullenberger said that in respect of US Airways Flight 1549, computer-imposed limits prevented him from achieving the optimum landing flare for the ditching, which would have softened the impact.
_acme··on The Heroin Business Is Booming in America
Do you mean to suggest that OxyContin (extended-release oxycodone) is less of a problem, or less addicting, than Percocet (instant release oxycodone + APAP)?
