__xtrimsky··on Erase All Kittens: Introduce kids to HTML by modifying a game while playing
Looks pretty cool! My daughter is not yet 2 years old so it's a bit early, but I can't wait to introduce her to programming. (I myself started at 13)
__xtrimsky··on Ask HN: What do you think of this first employee offer?
When I was a junior I would have refused this offer, I don't know how you want to hire an intermediate-senior with that.
__xtrimsky··on Show HN: Hack Your Mortgage
This does not take into account real estate taxes.

For the house I'm about to buy, it says the mortgage would be 1730$. That would be extremely nice, except that I have 830$ of monthly taxes.

So it's actually no where near that.

__xtrimsky··on JQuery in 2025
Neither do I.
__xtrimsky··on Restaurant finds out capacity is reduced because of customer mobile phone usage
I use a little bit my phone while ordering at a restaurant, sometimes taking pictures. But my average eat time is less than an hour, even if I'm at a date with my wife.
__xtrimsky··on [dead]
agreed, scrolling is unpleasant.
__xtrimsky··on Super Pixel Quest
Although I had a lot of work to be done, I still clicked to the end :(
__xtrimsky··on Ask HN: Would you hire an 18 year-old front end developer?
I do agree with you. Throwing in something with Bootstrap and basic Javascript can be enough to create some restaurant's website. But you won't be hired to work on a fancy project on hacker news.

If you want to be hired, either learn Javascript in depth (objects, constructors etc...), either learn a service side language. And in a few years try to learn both, it's not that hard to become "fullstack"

__xtrimsky··on Teaching college is no longer a middle-class job, and everyone should care
Yes I do understand it, but it's the way they were giving out contracts at the school. I've seen one of them. It just says something like. You will be paid xxx$/h. Your course A has 40 hours. Your course B has 60 hours.
__xtrimsky··on Teaching college is no longer a middle-class job, and everyone should care
In my case it was hour in the classroom.

It did not account for answering questions by email, it did not account for grading them.

As I wrote below, if a teacher taught 8 hours of a class at 100$ / hr, he would be paid 800$, even if he has to spend 10 extra hours grading a student.

But to be honest they weren't giving that much homework, and only one test at the end of the class. I'd estimate for every 80 hours taught, there might have been only 10-15 extra hours. Which for 100$/hr or 300$/hr is worth it.

__xtrimsky··on Teaching college is no longer a middle-class job, and everyone should care
The teachers are being paid by the hour, but it does not account for grading or anything done out of the class. This might be one of the reasons it is so expensive. If a teacher has one class that lasts 8 hours, and is paid 100$ /hr, he will end up with 800$, even if he has to spend 10 extra hours grading everyone.

My university was for profit, as I said it's a french based university. The director owns multiple Lamborghinis (not sure although if it is related to being for profit).

My family member was not sneaking peaks at salaries, she was the one hiring the teachers, signing contracts with the teachers, etc...

__xtrimsky··on Teaching college is no longer a middle-class job, and everyone should care
I had a family member working at the school. She knew all the salaries. I was often asking, and getting heart attacks when crappy teachers were getting paid 300$ /hr.
__xtrimsky··on Teaching college is no longer a middle-class job, and everyone should care
At my computer science university (private university with HQ based in France) in downtown San Francisco, teachers were paid between 100$ and 300$ / hr, which I find decent.

100$ was mostly for teachers with not much experience, mostly students that graduated last year and were helping out as teachers.

__xtrimsky··on Show HN: My weekend project – simple cron monitoring
I agree with you. It's cool, but not 7$ / month, or 20$ /month cool.
__xtrimsky··on Ask HN: Personal Server Recommendations
OVH is always the cheapest!

Check their cheap dedicated servers "so you start":

__xtrimsky··on 3% use IE9 and 14% have a disability. Why do we only cater for the former?
Well to be honest I can test my code in IE9 to see if it works. But I have no idea how a disabled person is experiencing my website, I do put all the "alt" attributes etc...but it's hard to imagine it.
__xtrimsky··on Ask HN: About to be homeless, any ideas for a junior dev?
"Am I an expert? Nah"

Don't tell that on your resume.

__xtrimsky··on Ask HN: About to be homeless, any ideas for a junior dev?
He's located near Salt Lake City, Utah.

He's also a Ruby on rails developer looking at his resume: resume.patrickcurl.com

I am a PHP developer currently, and I don't mind switch over between languages (Java/Python/Ruby), but I do think that the market is bigger for PHP developers vs Ruby. (not sure about the bay area although, it could be different there).

__xtrimsky··on Ask HN: FU Money: What is your number?
50M for me.

8-10M for a house in a perfect location

10M at least for retirement

10M for living, house taxes, vacations, probably a boat.

10M for creating a company, funding it myself at first.

The 10M left I would probably share it with family. If I'm the only rich person around my family that would suck. And I have a big family.

__xtrimsky··on Poll: Where do you host your production environments?
OVH
__xtrimsky··on Ask HN: living and working in US
PS: there is a way to get your college paid for, and that is scholarships, if your child is extremely good in school, he/she can get any college paid for. But you can't count on it as it is something very hard to do.

But my cousin got 8+ years of medical schools paid for, and also her rent was paid for.

__xtrimsky··on Ask HN: living and working in US
26 yo that used to live in California, but lives in NY now.

You don't get sunshine everywhere in California.

I personally hated the weather in San Francisco, but a bit to the south (Mountain View) is already much nicer.

Now I'll go through your requirements:

40h workweek: Yes easy to find

5 weeks of holiday a year: That is almost impossible to find in my experience, except if you are willing to get 3 weeks out of your pocket. (meaning you are actually deducting your pay)

free/cheap health insurance: Find a company with health insurance, and then you should be able to have one for your family, and only pay an extra of 200 to 600$ / month (yes that is cheap in the US)

free/cheap education up to university level for our daughter: that's not possible, you will have to pay for college. I think you can get one cheaper if you live more than 6 months in that state, and then send your daughter to a state college. Here is an example of a university near me (starts at 4000$ / year):

__xtrimsky··on Compressor.io – Compress and optimize your images
The lossless compression does not compress better than photoshop.

And the lossy one is bad.

__xtrimsky··on Show HN: My new running app, Vima
I'll add just one thing to this.

For me the web interface is essential and I think it is for a lot of other people. People like to share their life with everyone. When I go running, I post a live tracking to facebook (not necessary), and then when I finished running I post automatically the data to Facebook. I want everyone to know I just spend X calories and ran for X miles. I enjoy the fact that everyone can click on the link, and view the map of where I was running.

I'm sure this is not a requirement for everyone, but a web interface is for me.

__xtrimsky··on Show HN: Codebrag – No More Late Friday Fixes
Just be careful with people abusing it.

For example at my work we technically have only one project, but our project root folder is over 4Gb.

__xtrimsky··on Show HN: Codebrag – No More Late Friday Fixes
I find it a bit too expensive.

It's the same price as the github "bronze" organization plan. And more expensive than their Medium personal plan.

I mean it does look nice, but you should probably create a cheaper plan to attract new customers.

Example:

25$ 5 users, unlimited plan

5$ 2 users, 1 project plan

And if possible I would even through a coupon code for 6 months on the 25$ plan.

__xtrimsky··on Show HN: Kiwichat – group chat of people who are within 1 mile
There is no way someone is using this app a mile around me!

I think 1 mile is too small of a distance, I would make it 5 or 10 miles.

Or do something based on location, if you are in SF or Manhattan, make it 1 mile, otherwise make it 10.

__xtrimsky··on The World's Most Powerful Browser-Based IDE – Codio
agreed, I just decided not to try it because of the sign up.

I don't trust enough the company yet to just send some of my github details.

And then I'm just not ready to pay for an IDE, I work mostly from my home office, I don't actually need to pay for an IDE, Netbeans works perfectly.

__xtrimsky··on Google AdSense leak?
I got banned from Google Adsense as a teenager (7 years ago). Still regret my stupid decision to try and hack Google Adsense clicks. My account was never restored :(.
__xtrimsky··on So, is this me? or is this icon sexist? you decide.
it's you honestly.

I'm a guy, the guy icon is blue, I don't care. It could have been pink. Our society sees boys in blue and girls in pink.

Is it bad ? no

Does it mean I can't wear pink ? no

Do I care about this specific design ? no, it adds some nice colors to the app. If it was red and yellow it wouldn't make sense.
