____a··on A ghost town of abandoned mansions in China
“Hurdles of cattle” is such an odd typo. Was this dictated voice to text or written by an AI? Or just a typo and no editing?
____a··on Flight attendants want to ban lap-babies
The irony is today you literally have to take a baby out of those carriers for take off and landing, but can have them in it at other times on the plane. That said, there might be a way to make a new type of carrier that is safer.
____a··on Digging a buried building out of Maine’s desert dunes (2020)
I ran cross-country races over those dunes in high school. It was from about mile 2 to mile 2.5 of the 3.1 mile race. Brutal to run.
____a··on 100 Largest Landowners in America
And Bill Gates bought a bunch of farmland. See here for the full details of his purchases: https://editions.mydigitalpublication.com/publication/?m=611...
____a··on 100 Largest Landowners in America
From a link posted by someone else, he owns 420,000 acres in Texas used by Blue Origin. https://editions.mydigitalpublication.com/publication/?m=611...
____a··on The Enduring Myth of Stranger Danger
I was surprised so clicked through on the graph. Looks like it is 3,000 per 100,000 people, not just children. Graph should have had more context in the article posted.
____a··on Facebook is giving $1k to every employee
I have been following this and the wording here appears to have changed in the last couple of days. The wording you quoted has been removed.
____a··on Tesla appears to defy Bay Area shutdown, plans to operate Fremont factory
"Alameda declares Telsa an 'essential business,' factory allowed to operate under cornavirus orders" https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Alameda-declared-Telsa-a...
____a··on WhatsApp sues NSO Group for allegedly helping spies hack phones around the world
An incredible quote: "Defendants subsequently complained that WhatsApp had closed the vulnerability. Specifically, NSO Employee 1 stated, “You just closed our biggest remote for cellular ... It’s on the news all over the world.”"
____a··on WhatsApp sues NSO Group for allegedly helping spies hack phones around the world
I saw this article earlier wanted to read comments on it here. It had already been posted five or six times, but never made it to the front page. Glad it finally did as it should. But what a weird dynamic.
____a··on Questions
Are you on mobile? Or something else might be breaking formatting for you. The chart linked does have numbers for the Panama Canal (408.12) and Burma-Siam Railway (385.45).
____a··on The Universe Is Not a Simulation, but We Can Now Simulate It
Is there a good book that covers primarily or at least secondarily the ideas behind the universe being a simulation? I'd like to learn more.
____a··on I Quit Twitter and It Feels Great
And yet more social than many people's use of Twitter.
____a··on I Quit Twitter and It Feels Great
No social media accounts, except this one.
____a··on Graffiti 'dying out' as kids dump spray cans for Instagram, Twitter etc.
The full quote is "In other words, kids these days are less Banksy and more Selena." I am familiar with both Selenas and side with Mz. It isn't a comparison, it is a contrast.
____a··on People Are Paying to Work in Bars and Restaurants
Switching "Work From" to "Work In" in the title to this makes it ambiguous. I thought the article was about waiters and other staff paying to work.
____a··on The Story of a Lucky Economist
If he is embellishing, he is certainly doing it in an understated way by saying he's impacted/saved fewer than 1,000 lives.
____a··on How We Uncovered the Real Identity Behind “Startup L. Jackson”
Shouldn't the space bar work as well?
____a··on Nigerian Billionaire Commits $100M for African Entrepreneurs
The title as it currently stands is oddly worded. I believe the "10,000" in "10,000 African Entrepreneurs in 10 Years" is both relevant and necessary for it to make sense.
____a··on Monty Hall, Erdos, and Our Limited Minds
Okay, yes. Had to work it out on paper to convince myself that is works out to 1/2 in the second case. Thank you.
____a··on Monty Hall, Erdos, and Our Limited Minds
My understanding is that in both situations as you described above you should switch. You are still in a new conditional state. Telling you that the host opened another door by chance and it is a goat removes the possibility that he opened the door with the car behind it by chance. You have eliminated one of the options and you have the 2/3 chance of winning by switching.
____a··on One YouTube account's 77,000 mysterious videos
Minor note, it is baling (from a bale)
____a··on A Non-Techie Tries to Build a Tech Company
The founder/author is a woman. There appears to be confusion with pronouns in most comments here.
