_Microft··on Russia's Stranglehold on the Nuclear Power Cycle
TLDR: Russia controls almost 40% of the uranium conversion capacities and 46% of the enrichment capacities. China is also controlling some amount, leaving only 36% of the conversion (Canada, France) and about 42% of the enrichment capacities under control of allies.
_Microft··on Filling Nuclear Power's $5T Hole Is Beyond the Banks
Actually we have a Germany-wide ticket for public transport since last year. With 49€/month it is very affordable and entitles us to use public transport and regional trains as much as we want. The federal government funds the system with a few billions but it’s a great success so far.

So do not despair.

Some species are rare. You need to look in the right places if you want to catch some fine raptors.

I guess they didn’t want to make it too easy for some Chinese fishing vessels ;)

The URL on the „VLC“-links look a lot like „Periscope“ which was acquired by Twitter long ago. Maybe this is actually the official Twitter stream itself?

It’s a nice visualization. Maybe move the label to above the bar if the bar becomes too short to fit it inside of it?

_Microft··on 'Zombie Fires' burning at an alarming rate in Canada
There seem to be a lot of these coal fires:

_Microft··on Did the ancient Greeks and Romans experience Alzheimer's?
Maybe this is an interesting article in this context:

„They Were Labeled Witches. They Just Had Dementia“, https://narratively.com/they-were-labeled-witches-they-just-...

Discussed in 2021: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27343868

This might be interesting because here people with dementia were not classified as suffering from cognitive impairment but as witches. It went as far as considering dementia purely a white people disease that didn’t occur in Africa. Maybe the Greeks and Romans did similar mistakes (e.g. treating them as seers, oracles or such)?

_Microft··on Why is Maxwell's theory so hard to understand? (2007) [pdf]
What are you thinking about here? If it is "matter/antimatter" "particles/antiparticles" then this is not true. There are still conserved quantities in annihilation of particles and antiparticles which makes other particles and/or energy come out of these annihilations.

Since YouTube submissions don’t show the user: it’s by Wenting Zhang (he’s documenting some projects at his website zephray.me if that rings a bell) who always does interesting stuff.

You could put both a Raspberry Pi Pico footprint and Teensy footprint on your custom PCB and later decide which one to populate?
_Microft··on Stoßlüften: Shock Ventilation
> It really doesn't matter how fast you replace the air. If you let in the cold air then you need to warm it up.

Ventilating quickly is preferable to ventilating slowly. Heat transfer through materials is comparatively slow. That means that exchanging the air in an instant retains the heat in the walls, furniture,… exchanging the air slowly allows heat from materials to „leak out“ as well.

I also saw this recommended in the past for assigning functions (like serving as a ground plane) to layers depending on the numnber of layers that your board is going to have:

_Microft··on Is it possible for me to submit a site in HN?
You're welcome. I hope you're going to enjoy the community!
_Microft··on Beeper – Moving Forward
Actually you are correct. I confused consumers and customers.
_Microft··on Beeper – Moving Forward
I was not familiar with RCS yet but according to Wikipedia, Apple will begin to support RCS in 2024.

On the other hand, this doesn’t exactly inspire confidence that it is going to be a polished experience: „Not all RCS functions defined in the standard are offered by every network and every client; only the services that are available to two communication partners are also offered in the client.“ (translated from the German Wikipedia article).

_Microft··on Beeper – Moving Forward
I do more than enough tinkering but my phone‘s supposed to just work.

> Your messages are all screwed up when delivered to anyone not using an iPhone. Pictures and movies are basically destroyed and worthless.

Sure and it is absolutely obvious on my side because these contacts don’t show blue messages. Take that away and the situation turns worse because now I‘d have to guess.

Edit: don’t get me wrong - I don‘t send broken messages, I just contact them on other messengers instead.

_Microft··on Beeper – Moving Forward
As an iPhone user, I‘m pretty happy how Apple dealt with this so far. I would hate to get spammed on iMessage and knowing that my messages are rendered exactly as intended on the receiver’s side is reassuring.

Calling this anti-consumer is rather subjective.

There are karma thresholds that unlock certain features, an example being able to downvote a comment. There might be some mechanism in place that prevents new (or not active yet) users from submitting URLs. You had no prior comments or submissions here and also had not gained any karma yet. Maybe try again after participating here for a while.

_Microft··on New scalable, fault-tolerant, and efficient open-source MQTT broker
Off-topic but maybe I'm speaking to the right audience here: are there any MQTT brokers for very low loads that (ideally) run on a microcontroller? All I want to do is to collect and log power consumption reports from smart plugs and environmental data and I was thinking of something consuming orders of magnitude less power than a Raspberry Pi.

Edit: thanks a lot!

_Microft··on The falling nutritional value of crops
> Won't matter once the world gets warmer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernozem will get these frozen black soil zones. If Ukraine joins the EU the whole of Europe will lose their farming competition and nobody will be able to grow against Ukraine.

That's a strange argument to make. Once these fertile soils become usable it is preferrable to have these resources inside the EU, not outside of it. And if you're worried about competition in the agricultural sector inside the of EU, then you could as well be concerned about a few other countries in the EU right now.
