_DeadFred_··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
Ai should fall under libraries not mega corporate tech houses. They are our existing knowledge repositories.
_DeadFred_··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
I'm sorry, Ukraine war discussion was labeled political on HN, not allowed, actively moderated and shutdown. Please don't post it here. Only Gaza/Israel get's a special carveout for these sorts of discussions on HN.
_DeadFred_··on Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society?
Disagree. When you admit to a mistake you just took on a bunch of liability and risk being sued. Worker bees are not empowered to take on that liability. It is much cheaper to let things get bad and maybe get sued but the plantiffs have to prove their case versus hand people a slam dunk 'we messed up' in the eyes of management. Simple things I could address in the past I now have to just shut up and no longer talk to the customer at all. It all comes back to lawsuits causing societal level changes that yet again remove slack/productivity/the previous way a functioning society works.
_DeadFred_··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
I too pine for the days when writers/artists/creators depend solely on patrons and the rich show off among each other with their private libraries of books no one else has again. Great times. Much progress.
_DeadFred_··on 28% of job postings on company career sites have been open over 90 days
Then post a disclaimer that this is a generic position post to gather resumes. Don't publish lies to people that a role is open.
_DeadFred_··on Suspension of the de minimis administrative exemption for imports $800 or less
'Kamala is no different than Trump, and she didn't earn your vote, you should just stay home' vibes.

We have learned Kamala was in fact much, much different than Trump, and many peoples rights have been trampled because of this sort of nonsense fatalism.

_DeadFred_··on AI and the Destruction of the Creative Commons
And we run the risk of fall into that lost generation under AI.

But hey, 50 years later things might work out, that is if past performance guarantees future results when it comes to adjusting to employment shocks.

_DeadFred_··on AI and the Destruction of the Creative Commons
I once built a product that optimized waste. I was so proud of myself, it was going to save so much money. Did a site visit to a beta site and was talking to staff. One woman asked me if I knew what happened to that waste. I answered no. She told me it was bagged up and sent to third world countries where it saved lives. That is how I killed people to save money. Yes, if you are dependent on that waste it is very precarious. Doesn't change the reality for the people who it no longer went to save. I don't know the lesson to take from it. Still haunts me. Saving the money kept services in underserved communities in the US and touched tens of thousands of lives. But it also cost lives. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
_DeadFred_··on End the H-1B Program
What is it when HN posters label winning an actually lottery (the H1b lottery) as meritocracy?
_DeadFred_··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
Nike went mail order only but wouldn't accept orders to PO boxes which meant I could no longer buy Nikes. Crazy move on their part.
_DeadFred_··on Remember Hong Kong
Normally numbers are countered with numbers that back up your position, not personal anecdotes and attacks on source credibility.
_DeadFred_··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
Forget researchers you as a business are putting in your business optimizations, your processes in order to train it so that Ai can then give that information to your competitors once incorporated into its training set. You are literally training your competitors.
_DeadFred_··on Amazon refused to give pregnant workers bathroom breaks
Are you on stage at a speaker panel 8 hours a day, every day? Because in the 8 hours a day case 'just holding' isn't an acceptable requirement.
_DeadFred_··on No constitutional right to clean water, federal court finds
If the engineering firm is acting as an 'agent of the state' then the protections extend to them as well. Otherwise we wouldn't be able to protect private prisons, etc from being sued, and we can't have that happening in America. So the court invented a fake protection (qualified immunity), and then invented a fake protected class called 'agents of the state'.
_DeadFred_··on How AI is breaking the British state
So the civility and caring of modern civilization is a fiction that government can't (or doesn't intend to) actually deliver on and AI is exposing that it's all a fraud/fiction intended to keep us in our place? With everyone realizing it's not:

'my bad luck that the government couldn't deliver on it's promise in my case, but it must be a one off or something to do with me'

and is instead:

'the system is designed with so much friction in order to prevent government from having to deliver on it's promises/the image/laws/social contract it pretends exist (in order to keep people willing to accept the status quo)'.

Like another article today about it being ok for the government to lie to you about if your water is safe to drink, the government is straight lying here with no intention/ability to actually deliver on the agreement/social contract people are led to believe exists.

_DeadFred_··on You Don't Have a Right to Safe Drinking Water, US Court Rules
Sure they can. Jails (run by the local police or sheriff) lie about the safety of the food they serve, the facilities they run, the outcomes of the policies they implement all the time.
_DeadFred_··on You Don't Have a Right to Safe Drinking Water, US Court Rules
In the USA the police can lie to you, but you can not lie back to them. To do that is a crime.
_DeadFred_··on You Don't Have a Right to Safe Drinking Water, US Court Rules
Who decides if I committed a crime by lieing/telling inaccurate information to the FBI? Oh, the courts do you say? If they can police me over such a fuzzy concept, they can police themselves as well.

https://www.dougmurphylaw.com/criminal-defense/federal-crime...

The federal courts are going to be surprised when their 'there is no law, just enforcement we want on the plebs' results in juries made up of plebs stop approving the unfairly applied to some people convictions the feds want. It's basically the last recourse we have. 'enforce the law correctly and fairly, or we the people will stop enforcing it at all'.

_DeadFred_··on The moral panic over data centres is foolish
If you really cared about people calling things out, you would be focusing on other topics than datacenters because people call all kinds of things out all the time. That fact you only care about data centers is telling.
_DeadFred_··on 'People are going to get screwed' Pennsylvania voters unite against data centres
Because the water system is a public utility funded by the people who live within the community?

Little Red hen, why do you get to choose who get's to eat your bread?

_DeadFred_··on Mark Cuban: Why US hospitals "don't know their costs"
We've socialized healthcare, just in the worst possible (but politically easiest) way.
_DeadFred_··on Mamdani bans AI in NYC schools
Weird title. Should be:

"New York City Bans A.I. in Elementary and Middle Schools"

First sentence is "A new policy announced by the Department of Education bars younger students from using artificial intelligence, but stops short of a moratorium."

Not sure how handfuloflight got "Mamdani Bans AI in NYC Schools" from that. I'm also seeing zero instances of "Mamdani" in the article?

_DeadFred_··on The American Worker vs. the Most Qualified
Bullshit. Our left wing party has to moderate itself to be electable, but talk to Democrats about where they would like things to be and you will find out you are completely wrong. On healthcare. On social safety nets. On human rights. You are just 100% wrong, I'm guessing because the makeup of the United States doesn't allow the outcomes you want reality has you wrongly blaming Democrats. But the reality of the American voter base doesn't mean the party and party members putting in the slow/hard work of changing things are center right.

What you are saying is like saying the people feeding the poor during the limited schedule a city allows don't really care about feeding the poor because if they did they would do it at all hours. No, they are putting in the hard frustrating work, even when the limits they have to work withing suck.

_DeadFred_··on EPA says power for data centers can sidestep pollution laws
And now we will have to add more bureaucracy and regulations to the process because of the tech bro's abuses of reasonable carveouts. More bureaucracy that future tech bros/right wingers will complain about existing even though they chose to force the matter to the point of regulation.
_DeadFred_··on EPA says power for data centers can sidestep pollution laws

_DeadFred_··on Silicon Valley is in denial in face of widespread backlash
Just 5% of the population with no hope, no future, and looking at no survival can be extremely disruptive to a society. Take away all the daydream future job options and only leave the difficult labor that breaks peoples bodies by 40 and the youth could become disruptive to society. You can't add in Mana making sure every minute of those jobs left is productive and every dollar paid in wages gets clawed back from workers. People can't function in modern hyper optimizing of all the impacts on workers but no optimization in housing affordability, food affordability, enjoyment options that benefit the average person instead of all optimizations extracting all the previous slack/dollars in life.

You can't optimize away all the slack (in affordability, in time, in things to be enjoyed, in xyz, in 123). You can't optimize away all the future opportunity. You can't optimize away all the daydreams and hope and expect society to look anything like our current society.

_DeadFred_··on Starbase, LA
Any day now all those tax cuts are going to pay off and trickle down. Any day.
_DeadFred_··on US data centers tripled annual water consumption to 17B gallons
Wild to see pro-AI datacenter people pushing the vegetarian narrative. For the last 50 years people have found the whole vegetarian narrative annoying (even to those of us who have been vegetarian). Way to pick like the worst positions. Anti-human, anti-jobs, and now (newly added) and preaching to people upset that they should be a vegetarian? For being the smartest people you are horrible at understanding people.
_DeadFred_··on Electric shock gloves in use by police departments in Bellevue, Omaha
Yes, because they normalize the escalation to violence/to torture for coercion over de-escalation/actual policing while removing the optics issue of visibly using direct violence/torture on random citizens when using a Taser.
_DeadFred_··on Electric shock gloves in use by police departments in Bellevue, Omaha
If time travel gets invented it's going to be on every social forum in the country, which would be grounds to not talk about it on HN I guess?

Authoritarian police state high tech cyberpunk torture devices seem about as 'hack news'ie as something can get.
