_Codemonkeyism··on Ask HN: What are the signs that you have a great manager?
Great manager? Not sure, but some managers will take the best space in the office and some will take the worst. And it's not about the space.
_Codemonkeyism··on Study finds that a GPS outage would cost $1B per day
I assume Galileo would keep on working? If you trust GLONASS then that one two. I seldom see Chinese satellites somehow.
_Codemonkeyism··on Cycling commissioners say painted bike lanes don’t make cyclists feel safer
If not about painted or not-painted. It's about is the bike lane 4m wide or 1m.

Painting 1m wide bike lanes is just because cities don't want to take away from cars.

Painting 1m wide bike lanes is trying to eat the cake and have it. There is no free lunch.

In Berlin most bike lanes are very narrow [1] while in Copenhagen most bike lanes are wide enough to feel safe and have two bikes next to each other. No one cares about paint.

[1] ... and winding, and blocked all the time by delivery trucks, parking cars and construction sites, and taking 90 degree turns around obstacles, and full of overgrown bushes ...

_Codemonkeyism··on Mazda is purging touchscreens from its vehicles
Touch screens in cars are the equivalent of shiny phones. They persuade people to buy and some of them might love them.

Nearly every phone I see has a protector around it, destroying the nice looking design because one drop and it breaks. But you still need to have shiny designed phones or you won't sell them.

So cudos to Mazda. I wonder if they can keep this policy up when everyone else has shiny large touchscreens.

_Codemonkeyism··on Radiohead sells recordings to public after hacker threatens to leak them
The article literally says

"last week stole lead vocalist Thom Yorke’s minidisk archive"

He stole the minidisks.

_Codemonkeyism··on The Pentagon is battling the clock to fix serious, unreported F-35 problems
Exactly, every ground attack air plane from WW2 with added flares would work fine.

Some in the Airforce recognized this and it lead to the light-attack aircraft competition.

But currently it's stopped, I guess there was not enough money in it and was killed by a competing faction in the Pentagon.

_Codemonkeyism··on The Pentagon is battling the clock to fix serious, unreported F-35 problems
You've lost me at 'crazy combat networking'.

But next time I talk to my CEO I will try this with 'we do some crazy networking'.

So someone who still a MD now is a hacker instead of a thief?
_Codemonkeyism··on CP/Mish: open-source sort-of-CP/M distribution
Hurray! CP/M on an Amstrad 464 in the 80s was my first contact with an operating system that back then felt to me professional - like those in the movies. And it brought compilers.

_Codemonkeyism··on You probably don’t need ReCAPTCHA
Biggest pain with ReCAPTCHA is since I've switched to Brave. Sometimes it's 4 to 5 ReCAPTCHA forms coming up until the system is satisfied I'm a user.
_Codemonkeyism··on The Superrich Endanger Democracy
First step in Germany would be lock politicans up that take money from special interest groups and rich people and/or have another "side-" job in industry at the same time. Also lock politicians up when they take a relevant industry job afterwards.

Reality is politicians take a lot of money but do not need to declare where they take it from and right after their politician career will get well paid job from the people they regulated a short time before.

_Codemonkeyism··on Giving a name to my sales anxiety
Selling is not convincing, selling is finding people that are uninformed but are in the market for your product. So good sales people will stop selling to you when they realize you are currently not in the market for the product and move on. Bad sales people will waste their time "convincing" you.
_Codemonkeyism··on Giving a name to my sales anxiety
My wife founded a startup and in the beginning had "sales anxiety". Then she became and outstanding (B2B) sales person and recently sold her startup successfully.

She now helps other founders with (B2B) sales anxiety.

_Codemonkeyism··on Algorithm allows video editors to modify talking-head videos as if editing text
Every news is to some degree manipulated.

Together with a friend I was one of the geocaching and confluencing pioneers in Germany.

Some large papers and TV stations reported about this "phenomenon" and wanted to make an article/ documentation about us. Every one of them came with a story in their head which we had to fill with our pictures and quotes. No one was interested in "reality". For a news clip we had to shoot situations several times, I remember leaving a house 5 times until they shot was done. Up until then I thought news would be unstaged.

_Codemonkeyism··on Arc.io – A Crowdfunded Distributed CDN
I found the attached volume storage in their cloud VMs fast enough and the servers with 2 attached SSDs plentiful fast.

_Codemonkeyism··on Researchers solve mystery of the galaxy with no dark matter
What I don't understand here is: You have a galaxy where mass doesn't add up. There are rivaling explanations, one being that you estimated the distance wrong, the other that there is no Dark Matter. Isn't the first one the more likely one you should investigate?

Most often (depending on the cycle in the SSD tech generation) larger SSDs are faster (see new PCI4 controllers who need a number of NAND chips for best performance). A 256GB has a high probability of being not the best choice for compilation. A 2018 MacRumors thread shows:

    - 256 SSD 1400 MB/s Write 2200 MB/S Read
    - 512 SSD 1846 MB/s Write 2500 MB/S Read
    - 1T SSD 2500 MB/s Write 2600 MB/S Read
    - 2T SSD 2600 MB/s Write 2700 MB/S Read
So this is mostly with write, the iMac Pro I'm writing this on with 1TB is in line with ~2800 MB/s write speed.

But of course this could be very different with the new iMac which might have a very fast write SSD in the 256 GB model.

And how many people here who claim to use a SAN for sure use a NAS is funny.

From maintaining large image storage FC SANs with Apple xServe and IBM DS for some years this is no fun to administrate for peak performance and I would assume most smaller shops have NAS instead of SANs (no arguing larger shops have SANs as we did driving ten photo studios).
