_9ptr··on GLP-1s are breaking life insurance
I would have thought the "traditional way" would simply be eat less, move more (by changing your habits of course).
_9ptr··on GLP-1s are breaking life insurance
It's not a gamble, it's an application of the law of large numbers. But yes, changes in the underlying assumptions (e.g. mortality rates) can make the whole calculation untenable.

Oh come on, you can't be serious.

It's not a gamble, you transfer your risk to a collective.

_9ptr··on Does showing seconds in the system tray actually use more power?
No and No, it doesn't.
_9ptr··on Does showing seconds in the system tray actually use more power?
Doesn't the blinking cursor tell you it's ready for input and not still running the previous command? Seems useful.
_9ptr··on Let me pay for Firefox
That has been true for a long time, even when liberals were happier with american policy.
_9ptr··on Let me pay for Firefox
The use as a suffix "-frei" is something different I think. I'm pretty sure it has kept its meaning of "-los" ("-less") since a long time ago.
_9ptr··on Let me pay for Firefox
How could I forget about Freibier. Unverzeihlich.
_9ptr··on Let me pay for Firefox
Isn't English actually the only language where "free" can also mean "at no cost"?

German is the same as French in this regard, we have "kostenlos" (literally cost-less) "gratis" (the same) and "umsonst" (which interestingly can also mean "in vain").

Fanny Chmelar is pronounced "Fanny Schmeller", which sounds a bit like "Fanny Smeller"

Have you ever heard of Fanny Chmelar?

Section 4.6 is certainly ridiculous, but I suppose you can just ignore it.
_9ptr··on Making Explainable Minesweeper
That's not the case. I have come to such situations. And I suppose the program can identify those as well and put the bomb where you didn't click.
_9ptr··on Making Explainable Minesweeper
In minesweeper online there's also a "no guessing" mode which, in my opinion, is much more interesting than the normal mode. It means that if you guess in a situation where you could have deduced the mines, you always get a mine. Conversely, if you really are in a guessing situation, you will never get a mine. I'm pretty sure the game calculates the unknown part of the map after each click anew.

_9ptr··on Game publishers respond to Stop Killing Games claim it curtails developer choice
The number of people who want that may be higher than you think. It's the only/main reason why the FIFA-games exist.
_9ptr··on The Death of the Middle-Class Musician
UBI is not about "care". That's just the typical left-wing compassion framing.

I don't want to abolish all taxes, I'm not a libertarian. But giving away the money you took from somebody else needs a justification (for example to pay for the roads). And I find "income redistribution" for the sake of it not an acceptable goal.

_9ptr··on The Death of the Middle-Class Musician
I made the socialism-remark because of the post before blaming everything on economic inequality. While that can lead to problems, I don't think it's necessarily a problem in itself or a sign of injustice.

You're correct in that UBI is something different than socialism.

_9ptr··on The Death of the Middle-Class Musician
I'm european, so socialism means actually socialism (no/no/yes).

Well in this case someone seems to employ and pay these software developers.

We can only speculate about the future having more AI-code or the repercussions thereof (as many do).

_9ptr··on The Death of the Middle-Class Musician
Except that socialism has failed already.

Universal basic income is impossible to justify morally.

_9ptr··on Sailing the fjords like the Vikings yields unexpected insights
This might not be the most scientific take, but the description reminds me of the Elvish boats of Lothlórien.

Did Tolkien possess advanced knowledge of viking seafaring?
