_1100··on Understanding ChatGPT Work
Having a name for these "thought-killing statements" or "thought-terminating cliches" has helped me recognize them in all sorts of settings in my life. Corporate, social, religious, the list goes on.

It makes sense as humans that we do many things to simplify things or even eliminate them in order to save energy and avoid stress, and we should be careful to recognize a need for balance while still working towards some greater goal, purpose, or good.

Even so, much like kerning, once you are aware of it, it is painfully difficult to ignore.

Do you think we will recognize any walls? Or is there a point where the output might look different with respect to different paradigms / modalities we throw at it, but we won't be able to understand the quantitative differences as good/bad/scalable?
_1100··on Project Glasswing: Securing critical software for the AI era
That is a fine stance to hold but some facts are still true regardless of your view on large businesses.

For example, it will benefit more people to secure Microsoft or Amazon services than it would be to secure a smaller, less corporate player in those same service ecosystems.

You could go on to argue that the second order effects of improving one service provider over another chooses who gets to play, but that is true whether you choose small or large businesses, so this argument devolves into “who are we to choose on behalf of others”.

Which then comes back to “we should secure what the market has chosen in order to provide the greatest benefit.”

_1100··on Factorio is coming to Nintendo Switch
Can you imagine a switch trying to load all the maps and resources for AngelBobs/K2/SE?

I know they do some impressive work to port modern games on switch but even my state of the art computer struggles to run K2+SE at scale.

You can also use sleep items/magic and fight them one at a time.

Also if you never lock on to either of them, they are less aggressive.

I love that these games are turning to my old man. “Back in my day you Had to think your way through the problems…”

I have to say, as someone that clicked this link that I found a few things you might want to consider before plugging again:

1. No disclaimer that you are involved with the site 2. Maybe talk about something other than furries in the room that you link 3. Maybe link to a landing page with more info on how to...do anything other than talk about furries?

Just my 2¢.

Isn't the short answer to "why are people subjecting themselves to this" just dark patterns?

I know it sounds overly reductionist or boogeyman-esque, but they captured a market and refuse to let go, doing every single thing they can to keep and monetize human attention.

Sure you do, the only feasible way to make a mars colony work is one-way trips of people / supplies once every nine months, when the earth/mars orbits align best for interplanetary travel.
_1100··on Ask HN: What's the best book you read in 2021?
I remember reading an interview where Asimov is asked why the books of the Foundation trilogy are so different.

The short answer is that the first book was inspired by an idea he had while talking to a professor about the rise and fall of civilizations.

The others were inspired by pressure by publishers to repeat success, and so he tried to improve and continue the story. This lead him to try and carry the story with characters, which was ironically not why people liked the first book.

The Mule was alright though, even if a little forced.

_1100··on Ask HN: What's the best book you read in 2021?
I’ll have to do this then, thanks!
_1100··on Ask HN: What's the best book you read in 2021?
I always forget how little actually happens in the first book of the trilogy, and how…earthy(?) it is?

It’s just so small in scope compared to the following books that I forget that its entire appeal is just how unknown the unknowns are and how much potential it sets up for the rest of the story.

_1100··on Ask HN: What's the best book you read in 2021?
Second McCarthy’s “effective language” attribution.

I read The Road, and it was so sufficiently “effective” in its descriptions and it’s setting that I’m happy never reading another McCarthy book again. Glad I did once.

I will watch the movies though!

_1100··on Ask HN: What's the best book you read in 2021?
I tried to read Cryptonomicon as a first introduction to Stephenson. Kept waiting for the good parts, and actually just stopped reading halfway through out of sheer boredom.

A few years later and I read Seveneves. Absolutely fall in love, and read Anathem right after. Loved it too.

To this day I still don’t understand why the first book felt so boring and the others didn’t. To make it worse, when you go looking for a synopsis of Cryptonomicon, everyone is so vague!

_1100··on Ask HN: What's the best book you read in 2021?
I almost got past this recommendation without having to read another sci-fi book but your Anathem pitch got me.

I’ve been stuck in sci-fi for 3 years straight and thought I was finally going to read something else before 2022.

Bah humbug!

_1100··on A ghostly galaxy lacking dark matter
Gatekeeping aside, I took the meaning of the comment to be that there is something in the galaxy that has the ability to construct/manipulate their surroundings in such a way that it appears to us as “intentional, from living beings”

I would be very interested to see which brands / models of cars would see significant MPG reporting changes.

How much would this exacerbate / accelerate the challenges car companies face in complying with governmental MPG requirements?

_1100··on New Details Emerge on the “Highly Modified Drone” That Outran Police Helicopters
All three of your points make sense, but for me the last point really resonates.

No need for a space program, or going through someone that does.

Just acquire drone > use drone.

_1100··on Berkeley Lab Debuts Perlmutter, World’s Fastest AI Supercomputer
Asimov wrote a short story[0] about this exact scenario!

Many people at HN have probably read this already, but maybe some of them could be part of the lucky 10,000![1]

_1100··on Peloton recalling all treadmills after reports of injuries, one death
Cycling shoes run the gamut of price, features and preferences.

Top three brands off the top of my head:

1. Bontrager: Owned by Trek, and is the most common type of spin shoe used in studios. Will have something for all price ranges, and have been around for a while.

2. Specialized: More ubiquitous in the cycling world, a slight amount of paying for the brand, but will also have everything you need. Most popular cycling brand, especially on the high end.

3. Fizik: Personal favorite because they are better for high arches out of the box. Unlike the other two, these guys don't make bikes, just shoes and seats. And they do both extremely well.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND going to a bike shop to buy the shoes and have the cleats fitted to your shoe in-person. This prevents injuries and improves results on the bike.

Pay for in-store once, take a silver sharpie, outline where the cleat is placed on the bottom of the shoe. Now you can replace the cleats for $20, and have a good idea of where to place them if/when you need a new pair of shoes.

If the headline “(extremist group) use / flock to matrix to plan (nefarious thing)” shows up in the news, these distinctions hardly matter anymore.

_1100··on MIT 6.172: Performance Engineering of Software Systems
IIRC, there was a study done in the last 10 years or so that found that there was a relationship between the type of degree, and how important the social or “prestige” component needed to be successful in a given field.

The rough trend was that success with STEM degrees was less reliant on the prestige of the institution where it was acquired, whereas arts/humanities degrees required prestigious institutions (and the connections that they afforded) in order to attain prominent positions in some time period after graduating.

_1100··on The Future of RTS
If you haven’t launched a rocket in the base version, then I strongly recommend no mods, while avoiding any videos or premade blueprints.

Then go watch videos and do it again, but much faster.

Then if you’re still playing, you obviously have time to kill so go play Industrial Revolution 2, space exploration, and bobs mods on their own for a whole new experience.

I remember my old track coach using this during practices.

We would swish the water around in our mouths to get rid of that bad taste you get when you’re thirsty, but he always warned us that the second we swallowed too much that practice was over because you get a stomach ache if you sprinted with all that water sloshing around.

_1100··on Kongregate closed to new games, shutting down forums and chat
I kick myself sometimes for not being around when they cut down on chat rooms and I never got reconnect with anyone in Ninja chat.

Jeez I was so young, I’d just log in to kongregate, type “i liek ninjas” because that was how people knew I was at my keyboard, and then spend the whole day playing flash games.

I did this hundreds of times over many years, took a break during college, and when I came back they’d culled down the number of chat rooms.

Guess I’m just replying to vent, and to also say thanks for all the good times, Kongregate.
