_1100··on Back of the envelope estimation hacks
We understand nothing “exactly” in this universe, but this is a thread about estimation hacks so maybe cool it on the fun fact witch hunt.? Idk just a thought.
_1100··on Left, Right, Above, and Under: Intel 3D Packaging Tech Gains Omnidirectionality
I'd be interested to hear some informed opinions on this tech...

Doesn't this add a ton of heat, and therefore a loss in clock speed?

Do the benefits of improved routing and transistor density outweigh this loss?

_1100··on Lyft lays off 17% of workforce, furloughs hundreds more
In the interest of complete clarity and understanding I went and found the exact transcript and this was exactly what was stated:

“I see disinfectant, where it knocks it out in a minute, one minute, and is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside, or almost a cleaning. "

_1100··on Early riser or night owl? New study may help to explain the difference
I’ll add n+1 to this anecdote.

Found a form of exercise I was excited and willing to get up for, now I wake up around 5:45 every morning trying to drag my “early riser” wife out of bed to go start the day.

Was a complete night owl before, and my wife was constantly reminding me that it was late and time to call it a day.

_1100··on Powerful Radio Signal from Deep Space
In the book, they start by sending as little as 3 protons, and it completely debilitates humanity.
_1100··on Powerful Radio Signal from Deep Space
The Three Body Problem is a first-contact trilogy of books that starts just like this:

Someone ponders what the most powerful thing in our area is (the sun) and then finds a way to influence it just enough so that it can send repeating signals. From there the alien armada heads our way and sets up the plot of the rest of the trilogy!

_1100··on Ask HN: How did you fix your narcissism?
And yet normal people can still act narcissistically at times, and can do this more or less often at different stages of life or in different circumstances.

The OP could very well be a person just realizing that they want to focus more on others and this is a completely normal stage of life that different experiences or perspectives can help with.

_1100··on I froze the salaries of my executive team to benefit other workers
Agreed.

It doesn't matter if it is hard to recognize, if you are unable to understand something then you are by definition incompetent with respect to the task or idea.

_1100··on How I Run a Company with ADHD
I strongly second the use of a bullet journal.

I can't count the number of times while talking to my psychologist, in the middle of a breakdown thinking "If only there were a system that I could offload all of the dumb things I can't remember to do..."

...and then laughing my way out of the room because my wife told me weeks earlier that she wishes I were using my journal. She notices that I'm happier when I use it, she is much happier because she doesn't have to ask me to do something 4 times...

_1100··on “I'm basically giving myself a permanent vacation from being BDFL”
I grok. I have neither read this, nor have I read any Harry Potter (much to the chagrin of many of my friends, I'm sorry, I've tried).

This sums up a fairly universal behavior that I think we all tend to take part in, and also see others taking part in when we all spot a problem but don't take action because we have the luxury (i.e. removed from any real chance of harm) to watch the problem be solved by anybody else. Then we use this position of luxurious inaction to judge and complain.

I'm surprised by the reactions I see here though. I'm not invested in the subject of this post, but I can see the hurt of this person in their post. It also appears that they are not bailing, but simply allowing others to try and do better, with suggestions to boot.

And here we sit, justifying our luxurious anger at a person so exhausted from doing free work that they have to walk away from what I assume is a passion of theirs.
