_0o6v··on Ask HN: What is your experience with complexity vs. time based estimations?
Time based estimations are always wrong.

Complexity based estimations are so abstract as to be useless.

I honestly haven't found a good way of estimating, in my many years of working in software teams.

The best seems to be: set a reasonable "deadline" that seems achievable, agreed with the team, and work towards that. At least that gives everyone a goal, a focus, and a sense of "cutting your coat according to your cloth".

_0o6v··on Launch HN: Seed (YC W21) – A Fully-Managed CI/CD Pipeline for Serverless
Well done, and thanks for Serverless Stack! Awesome tutorial!

I completed it and it was excellent, and a lot of fun.

The only thing I would say is that a section on public user uploads would be amazing (e.g. avatars) as the perms and CDK stuff is a bit knotty for that (I eventually figured it out but it took a bit of trial and error).

_0o6v··on How to leave Google and why
> Some people say "I have nothing to hide, I don't care" which is essentialy ignoring basic human right and making this right worthless to you and very precious to others.

This doesn't make much sense, but I think I get the idea.

What most people mean when they say this is "the value I get out is worth more than the data I put in". And that's a perfectly valid view.

_0o6v··on Learning to Suffer
On a practical level, the author had awful blisters and heel pain because she was wearing trainers on a thru-hike?!

Get some proper hiking boots!

_0o6v··on I wasted $40k on a fantastic startup idea
> Make something people want

That's a charity.

> Make something people want __and will pay you for__

That's a business.

You learnt the hard way.

_0o6v··on How I Build Web Apps As A Freelancer
This is a fair post and fair enough for striving for simplicity.

On the TypeScript thing, if you're already using Parcel it can do all the TypeScript stuff for you with nothing extra required!

_0o6v··on Lessons I’ve Learned at 40
What an utter load of tripe, bordering on conspiracy theories (especially the "Be careful with prescription drugs").
_0o6v··on Startup Studios
Apart from the obvious bias having been written by a co-founder of a product studio, there are plenty of examples of product studios not working out. It's also a hugely saturated market now. Success stories (e.g. UsTwo) are very rare.
_0o6v··on AWS Lambda Terraform Cookbook with working examples
I don't fully understand your use case, but you can zip/package your lambdas using a null_resource TF resource too?
_0o6v··on AWS Lambda Terraform Cookbook with working examples
Comparing SAM and Terraform is like comparing apples and oranges. Comparing Terraform to CloudFormation is more appropriate, and Terraform wins in terms of verbosity there every time.

SAM generates CloudFormation templates/stacks, which create your AWS resources. Serverless generates CloudFormation templates/stacks, which create your AWS resources.

Related: I wouldn't recommend deploying raw lambda's without a framework. The development workflow really sucks without one. Use SAM or Serverless.

_0o6v··on Teaching the Unfortunate Parts
As the full lesson says:

For every soundness-related bug that sneaks through, TypeScript will probably save you from hundreds of "cannot read property of undefined" errors.

_0o6v··on The Mayron Cole Piano Method is now free
I'm enjoying working through the Faber Adult Piano Adventures books: https://pianoadventures.com/browse/libraries/piano-adventure...
_0o6v··on Grenfell Tower inquiry: key things we’ve learned this year
It makes perfect sense and is a well-known legal saying.

Edit: apparently it may be attributable to William Penn, of Pennsylvania fame.

_0o6v··on Centering in CSS
What on earth did I just read?

"Pop and Plop"?

"Gentle Flex"?

"Autobot"?

_0o6v··on How much I made as a good Engineer at Facebook
There is not a single engineering job in the UK that pays $1m per year. There are barely any engineering jobs that pay £100k+ a year.
_0o6v··on These are called opportunities
> Is it that we don't care about start-up time?

Not particularly. If it takes 13s to load Photoshop once a day, then I can access all these great features, that's alright with me.

_0o6v··on Ask HN: How do I get a word in edgeways?
It's certainly more difficult on conf calls
_0o6v··on AWS Cognito is having issues and health dashboards are still green
> It's not posted on SHD as the issue has impacted our ability to post there.

Is that not a massive catch-22 for a service dashboard?

_0o6v··on We Fix: A DIY Manifesto (2014)
iFixit is so great. I recently paid £200 to a charlatan who bodged a phone repair, so I took the leap and attempted to fix the bodge. iFixit had simple photo guides, it was a piece of cake, and I'll never send my phone away to get fixed again.
_0o6v··on Proptee: £0 commission property stock exchange
Read again. I said the right to a home is a human right, not the right to home ownership.
_0o6v··on Proptee: £0 commission property stock exchange
> It's hard to see how rent can be disconnected from the property value because if the achievable rent for a property skyrockets that will pull the property's value up.

In a free market (the UK is about as free a market as you get in relation to property ownership and rental), this might be true. But it does depend on how regulated the market is, in terms of rent controls etc. I'm not sure this would hold for an older, or bigger, or more difficult to maintain property in an area with a high percentage of renter competition in some European countries, for example (e.g. Germany).

_0o6v··on Proptee: £0 commission property stock exchange
The term "leasehold" has very negative connotations in the UK, just so you know.

_0o6v··on Proptee: £0 commission property stock exchange
There's a very large difference between an individual using a house as a home, then selling and realising any increase in value, vs. a commercial company owning a property as an investment vehicle (in the literal sense - people can invest in the company!) and then letting the property out (or selling a time-based lease to a leaseholder).
_0o6v··on Proptee: £0 commission property stock exchange
> Having a roof over your head and owning that roof outright are not the same thing.

But they are two sides of the same coin.

By the market pricing you out of being able to own your property (whether it be through foreign investment into buy-to-let, poor supply of affordable housing stock, inherited money passed down between generations further entrenching the difference between those that have and those that do not etc. etc.), people remain an asset to be sweated at the benefit of the property owners. That, as I said, is simply a regulated feudal system.

_0o6v··on Proptee: £0 commission property stock exchange
Whilst this is no doubt innovative, everything that is abysmally wrong with property ownership in the UK stems from complicated ownership structures like that being proposed here. Just look at the leasehold scandal (and upcoming reform), the push for commonhold, and the things that go wrong (such as the cladding scandal following Grenfell).

Homes are not investment vehicles to make people wealthy - they are a fundamental human right that many people are priced out of, or subject to unscrupulous landlords and freeholders exploiting what is still essentially a feudal system.

_0o6v··on I Ripped Out a £6k Lighting System
This has got me riled.

1. I hope all this electronic and plastic junk gets properly recycled.

2. Learn to be more prudent with your money.

3. £6k would have funded a lot of solar lights in developing countries through SolarAid or similar.

_0o6v··on I Ripped Out a £6k Lighting System
It's an interesting academic exercise / hobby. Beyond that, nothing.

You obviously didn't read it very carefully then.
_0o6v··on You can no longer reinstall CS 2 or 3 even if you have the original disks
If using Fuji or Sony, there is Capture One Express, which is a basic RAW transformer, catalogue and the ability to do some basic editing. For a hobbyist it's pretty good - and free!
_0o6v··on Notes on My Colon Cancer
Hey Jeff. Your blog's great and I can relate to a lot of it. I somehow avoided an ostomy after having a vast amount of my guts removed, but I sometimes wish I did have one. Do you think your quality of life has improved since having one?
