ZeroGravitas··on The Perils of ISBN
Their guidelines on what gets its own work, and what doesn't, are here:

https://openlibrary.org/help/faq/editing#works-special-cases

So an abridged or bowlderised or annotated or illustrated version are collected under the same work, even though people might have good reasons to want one over another (the language used and the specific translator being just two important attributes)

But summaries or adaptations or plays and screenplays are not.

There's always gray areas, but note the edition info isn't lost, it just lives in a subordinate position that is linked directly from the work.

ZeroGravitas··on Stock Slide and Slow Sales: What's Happening in China's E.V. Market?
> Intense competition is crushing profit margins, government subsidies are vanishing, and faster production cycles mean that no company can hold a lead for long.

American journalists no longer even recognize free market competition.

ZeroGravitas··on The Perils of ISBN
In FBRB translations are generally considered the same work.

In Openlibrary specifically they should be combined as one work. The editions can store the language and the translator info.

The current grouping is probably because semi-automatic (and some manual) merging is easier for titles in the same language.

ZeroGravitas··on Tesla Sales Down 55% UK, 58% Spain, 59% Germany, 81% Netherlands, 93% Norway
BYD have also built a fleet of 8 of their own car carriers with a million car per year capacity. As well as multiple factories in multiple countries/continents outside China, including one in California (commercial trucks and bus only)
ZeroGravitas··on Billionaires Gone Wild
> The rational fear of those who dislike economic inequality is that the rich will convert their economic power into political power: that they’ll tilt elections, or pay bribes for pardons, or buy up the news media to promote their views.

> I used to be able to claim that tech billionaires didn’t actually do this—that they just wanted to refine their gadgets. But unfortunately in the current administration we’ve seen all three. -- Paul Graham

ZeroGravitas··on Tesla Sales Down 55% UK, 58% Spain, 59% Germany, 81% Netherlands, 93% Norway
More than half of Tesla's cars are built in China so you can hate them for both reasons.
ZeroGravitas··on Tesla Sales Down 55% UK, 58% Spain, 59% Germany, 81% Netherlands, 93% Norway
Maybe they think they can ride the cult and get out faster than the cultists when necessary?
ZeroGravitas··on Carney constructs a mega anti-Trump trade alliance
This is the evolution of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) which was intended to box in China by uniting all the countries around it, and which trump cancelled on his first day of his first presidency.

Ironic to see it evolve to try to contain the USA and strange not to have that irony noted in the article.

ZeroGravitas··on 1940s Irish sci-fi novel features early mecha and gravity assists
Tangentially related via the Irish Language but on YouTube, "Channel 5" who previously focused on street protest gonzo journalism have branched out into explorations of endangered languages and started with an episode on Irish:

ZeroGravitas··on Peter Thiel: 2,436 emails with Epstein from 2014 to 2019
Example of the kind of stuff easily findable in 2006 if you ask an underling who knows how to Google to check out the guy throwing sex parties you want to attend:

https://www.thesmokinggun.com/documents/sex/billionaire-palm...

ZeroGravitas··on Peter Thiel: 2,436 emails with Epstein from 2014 to 2019
> Thiel is known for his libertarian political views and became a prominent supporter of Donald Trump

Apparently AI does deadpan sarcasm now?

More seriously, is there a technical write up on how they are generating these wiki pages from the emails?

ZeroGravitas··on Peter Thiel: 2,436 emails with Epstein from 2014 to 2019
Which I found amazing when one of Musk's tweets to defend himself was to say that if he wanted to have creepy sex parties he could just throw them himself and not need a loser like Epstein involved.

What a way to totally burn your brother.

ZeroGravitas··on Peter Thiel: 2,436 emails with Epstein from 2014 to 2019
But Epstein met the guy in charge of 4Chan the day before /pol got created to "contain" the fascists.

And that's where QAnon started.

So now we have meta-conspiracy theories about who started conspiracy theories.

ZeroGravitas··on US repeals EPA endangerment finding for greenhouse gases
Generally these things follow a Kuznets Curve where you get rich from polluting and then are eventually rich enough to care about poisoning your children.

China's bad air around the time of their Olympics is pointed to as being a turning point that could have toppled the government if not dealt with.

Slightly uniquely they seem to have discovered a way to become even richer by cleaning up their pollution, the timing for EV and renewables working out well, and presumably many other nations will try to follow that pattern going forward.

Even just buying these things from China will make both sides of the trade richer compared with dirtier alternatives.

ZeroGravitas··on False claims made by the Trump admin as it revokes a key scientific finding
Fact checking the fact checkers:

> This compares to a new natural gas plant, around $65 per megawatt hour, or a new advanced nuclear reactor, which runs over $80. Offshore wind is among the sources of new power generation that will cost the most to build and operate, at $88 per megawatt hour, the EIA said in July.

This is an accurate reflection of numbers the EIA published in 2025, but for advanced nuclear those numbers reflect the eventual price of what a new technology might hopefully reach once it is proved and then matured by building lots of them. The prices are for new tech coming online after 2030 where the FOAK (first of a kind price) would undoubtedly be higher, assuming they even actually get built. Previous attempts in the US have been cancelled after price estimates doubled.

Offshore wind in the course of being built in America today is already hitting those price points (not accounting for recent Trump sabotage) and is globally well understood and maturing.

In China offshore wind is cheaper than coal as of 2024 and they have half the world's installed capacity, 50GW with 40GW installed in the last 5 years.

ZeroGravitas··on Epstein Files: if you change the extension to .mp4 you can view the videos
I've not clicked on any links yet but this comment is probably worth reading before anyone else does:

> the 2 hour vhs might have legitimately the most disgusting evidence yet. There’s what appears to be a naked man with a child on a bed. They’ve boxed it out except the legs and it’s the worst thing I’ve ever fucking seen. I don’t know if I can look at these files ever again.

ZeroGravitas··on Elon Musk's Sci-Fi Hyperloop Failed
The conclusion seems far too charitable, claiming it was a gamble on a dream. Interpreting this as knowing graft makes much more sense and multiple people in this story should be jailed for it.
ZeroGravitas··on Richard Dawkins met Epstein despite knowing of conviction
Atheist blogger Rebecca Watson has a more personal take on this, since Dawkins and Epstein were conspiring against her in the emails:

Epstein Files Reveal How Pathetic Richard Dawkins & Other Men Are

https://skepchick.org/2026/02/epstein-files-reveal-how-pathe...

> my name was in the first Epstein document drop because back in 2011 I criticized physicist Lawrence Krauss for defending his “friend” Jeffrey Epstein, years after Epstein was revealed to be a pedophile running a sex trafficking ring. Unbeknownst to me at the time, Krauss immediately forwarded my critical emails to Epstein

The second email drop reveals Dawkins later joins this attack on her, in order to defend Knauss and Epstein.

ZeroGravitas··on Q&A: New UK onshore wind and solar is '50% cheaper' than new gas
It is a new era, and has been for a while. 50% of new capacity globally has been renewable since 2012 and keeps growing. It was 92.5% last year and almost certainly higher for 2025.

In the US it was 99% wind, solar, batteries.

The people talking this down are in an info-bubble of their own creation.

ZeroGravitas··on Covering electricity price increases from our data centers
Amazon tried to buy an existing nuclear plant's output from a company called Talen for a datacenters colocated with the nuclear plant. They would do a special deal so the electricity they bought wouldn't go via the shared grid.

It got blocked by FERC as it would raise other consumers' energy prices and the deal wasn't fully transparent (probably intentionally so they could shift costs onto others).

ZeroGravitas··on China's CO2 emissions have now been 'flat or falling' for 21 months
Over a Petawatt-hour of Wind generation in 2025 using the latest stealth technology so that even someone with the all the technology and skills of the US military and intelligence communities at his command can't find even one of them.

The Chinese tech truly is advanced.

ZeroGravitas··on Q&A: New UK onshore wind and solar is '50% cheaper' than new gas
The quotes are because it's a quote. It was part of Energy secretary Ed Miliband's statement which is quoted in the article.
ZeroGravitas··on US labels SpaceX a common carrier by air, will regulate firm under railway law
Because they were essential?

Or because SpaceX is run by someone who doesn't care if his workers die, is a Covid denying crank and has connections in the Trump admin?

ZeroGravitas··on EPA to repeal its own conclusion that greenhouse gases warm the planet
This fascism is powered by fossil fuels.

The first time the Supreme Court intervened to quash regulations with no explanation via the so called "shadow docket" was the Clean Power act.

ZeroGravitas··on Americans want heat pumps – but high electricity prices may get in the way
Solar installer costs are broadly comparable as Australians are better qualified and even if they weren't comparable the fraction of the cost isn't enough to explain the total difference.

There's various studies comparing the two countries, Tesla did one and found various technical approach changes and permitting reforms. It suggests labor is 7% of the cost in the US. Soft costs around acquisition, sales and marketing can be 18%.

ZeroGravitas··on Americans want heat pumps – but high electricity prices may get in the way
It's a third or fourth of the price in Australia with equivalent labor costs.

It's mostly unnecessary red tape and a broken market that cause the differences.

ZeroGravitas··on Americans want heat pumps – but high electricity prices may get in the way
They'll ramp up automatically as people switch to the new system and less people use the old system that's sized and priced as if everyone is using it.

In more organized places they are a) ensuring new subdivisions are gas free from the start and b) disconnecting large areas of older connections simultaneously to minimize overheads.

ZeroGravitas··on "The Stanford scam proves America is becoming a nation of grifters"
I think you should hate him.

He is after all a rapist, thief, liar, conman, bully, grifter, authoritarian, gangster, racist, sexist narcissist who may very well end the American empire and democracy, and with your help it seems.

Which seems on topic for an article about America becoming a nation of grifters.

But at least he's doing things!

ZeroGravitas··on "The Stanford scam proves America is becoming a nation of grifters"
You like Trump a lot more than anyone who is informed about the things he is actually doing should like him.

But regardless, the same point could have been made about the Republican party in general for decades.

See The Baffler's article titled "The Long Con" for a history. It opens with a now shockingly unshocking list of all the lies Romney told and the prescient claim that this was necessary for Republican voters to like him.

> Mitt Romney is a liar. Of course, in some sense, all politicians, even all human beings, are liars. Romney’s lying went so over-the-top extravagant by this summer, though, that the New York Times editorial board did something probably unprecedented in their polite gray precincts: they used the L-word itself. “Mr. Romney’s entire campaign rests on a foundation of short, utterly false sound bites,” they editorialized. He repeats them “so often that millions of Americans believe them to be the truth.” “It is hard to challenge these lies with a well-reasoned-but- overlong speech,” they concluded; and how. Romney’s lying, in fact, was so richly variegated that it can serve as a sort of grammar of mendacity.

[...]

> All righty, then: both the rank-and-file voters and the governing elites of a major American political party chose as their standardbearer a pathological liar. What does that reveal about them?
