ZeroGravitas··on US Revokes Limits on Power Plants' Climate Pollution
And yet their coal usage dropped (for electricity) or was flat (when you include e.g. coal to chemicals) while both electricity use and GDP grew about 5%

Half-coal powered electrification is cleaner, greener, cheaper and smarter than sticking to ICE cars and gas heating for homes and industry.

China has gone from 10% of final energy being electricity to 30% this century while US and Europe went from around 20% to just above 20%

ZeroGravitas··on AI safety is mostly a sex cult
For some reason the bit that stuck out to me in a wild ride of an article was the guy who believed a super-intelligence was a threat to humans but distanced himself from veganism as if that was crazy part of the AI-doom sex cult that he disagreed with.

a) because veganism seems as exotic to me as someone doing CrossFit

b) the very obvious parallels of a more intelligent creature torturing and killing large numbers of other creatures for relatively little benefit.

ZeroGravitas··on Saving Jet Fuel
Yes, contrails appears to be mostly solvable at a small cost in time and fuel and people have started to take action on that.

For most flights today though, if you only count the CO2 produced you're understanding the climate damage by about half.

ZeroGravitas··on Saving Jet Fuel
They are roughly equal problems at the moment.

> Recent estimates show that contrails cause about the same amount of warming each year as all the CO₂ emitted by all flights from 1940 to 2018.

ZeroGravitas··on US coal 'biggest contributor by far' to rise in global emissions
I don't think China will ever pass the per capita historical emissions of the USA.
ZeroGravitas··on US coal 'biggest contributor by far' to rise in global emissions
When it began to dawn on them that their political "side" was intentionally ignoring climate change to boost fossil fuel profiteers they fell back to mocking hippies and silly women environmentalist for supporting feel good renewables instead of manly nuclear.

It made them feel much better, so now they need to desperately avoid learning anything about either renewables or nuclear power because their ego will collapse if confronted with reality.

ZeroGravitas··on 'Offensively cheap': solar power is looking up
And yet in the US one tripped this month (that we are only two weeks into) and one tripped last month too.

ZeroGravitas··on 'Offensively cheap': solar power is looking up
Coincidentally quoting some of the most despised grid operators in the world. Which obviously correlates with a desire to flee them when offered a solar/battery escape hatch.

> energy groups in some [Australian] states are having to literally give away excess power generated during the middle of the day.

And yet they needed to be forced to offer this by government and most responded by upping grid connection fees and rates at other times, actively undermining a move that would be to the benefit of the entire nation. Curious that they weren't more keen to get rid of that horrible solar energy that's threatening their grid balance if it meant they had to reduce the price to raise demand.

ZeroGravitas··on 'Offensively cheap': solar power is looking up
Weirdly phrased since when you have a full, real nuclear plant you need to be ready to deal with that tripping off the grid suddenly, because it happens regularly.
ZeroGravitas··on Musk Is Running a Fake Voter Registration Site Designed to Steal and Sell Data
Again? Didnt he do this in 2024 too?
ZeroGravitas··on The case against JPEG XL
The quality of the preview layer is somewhat under the control of the user though.

And that comparison was made for a JPEG-XL focused site, and uses quite large images that are then scaled down dramatically (at least on mobile) for display which is probably not an ideal visual test anyway (but possibly necessary for there to be enough time to see any difference)

ZeroGravitas··on The case against JPEG XL
Wasn't that also basically one guy from the VLC/ffmpeg community that drove that effort? I think they got funding from Netflix to do it again on ARM after demonstrating the benefits on desktop.
ZeroGravitas··on The case against JPEG XL
Yes but people add pre-preprocessor steps to image formats, like blurring jpegs or lowering bit depth in PNGs to make them more compressible.
ZeroGravitas··on Mark Zuckerberg: "Cambridge Analytica" (2017)
People seem to love attributing the success to memes rather than a decades long campaign to destroy the media, the legal system, education, political checks and balances and unlimited funding by billionaires.

When future supreme court judges are writing their manifesto to business interests on how to stop Ivy League graduates from caring about the environmental impacts of capitalism in the 70s, le funny memes were not mentioned.

On Hillary specifically, she was the subject of the the movie that the Citizens United court case was about!

Trump and Cambridge Anlytica are just unpleasant, cancerous symptoms of this.

ZeroGravitas··on Mark Zuckerberg: "Cambridge Analytica" (2017)
People seem to have forgotten how soulless cigarette companies were:

> As a 1984 R.J. Reynolds report stated:1819

> “Younger adult smokers are the only source of replacement smokers… If younger adults turn away from smoking, the industry must decline.”

ZeroGravitas··on Everyone should slow down AI development except for me
But that did actually happen.

The oil corporations were publicly claiming to support carbon taxes, while also secretly fighting actual implementations of carbon taxes.

All the communist/hippy stuff was done by people a couple of steps removed from the actual companies with obscure money trails. The official statements were much more sophisticated propaganda that if you weren't paying attention to who they were paying in the background would make them seem reasonable stewards of the climate transition.

ZeroGravitas··on Detailed report on the use of solar geoengineering
I'd like to see more open discussion of blockading and bombing uncooperative country's fossil fuel supply chains once decarbonization is in full swing.

And get wide global agreement that anyone geoengineering when they are still pumping oil is effectively declaring war on other countries and so attacks on their pipelines or ports are considered a counter strike.

ZeroGravitas··on Google will buy half the electricity from one of Finland's nuclear power plants
Germany has excess coal and gas capacity which they can turn on when needed. They, like most people import when it's cheaper than the local alternative.

Interconnected nations all importing when cheap electricity is available lowers costs for everyone.

Looking up the numbers Germany sells high and buys low when it's net importing

ZeroGravitas··on US diesel hits record $6 a gallon on Iran supply shock
I do argue that every oil importing country should electrify.

EU (collectively or independently) is distinct only in that it is ahead of the pack on many of these topics, hence why the Netherlands diesel price is higher than the US price, as noted by the comment I replied to.

But EU countries could and should still go further.

ZeroGravitas··on Neijuan
This came up a lot recently in regards to competition in the solar and EV spaces.

And yet, the competition generated cheap power and transport that was clean and didn't rely on foreign actors. Making life easier for many Chinese people.

It felt like the manufacturers had learned too much from western corporate media which is always moaning about competition and horrified at the thought of things getting cheaper if that would affect the sacred next quarter profits.

ZeroGravitas··on US diesel hits record $6 a gallon on Iran supply shock
Ok, but my specific comment applies to a large degree to every EU country individually and as a bloc, so you are splitting hairs pointlessly.

Often the incentive to take a job would be better under Basic Income as there's so many cliff edge benefits that phase out quickly as you work/earn more in the current system.
ZeroGravitas··on US diesel hits record $6 a gallon on Iran supply shock
The EU imports 97 percent of their crude oil, which is needed to refine diesel and still import a further 10% of their refined diesel.

It is somewhat amazing that Europe hasn't embraced electrification even more but taxing diesel use to encourage using it wisely is a smart geopolitical play given their situation.

ZeroGravitas··on US diesel hits record $6 a gallon on Iran supply shock
Trump explicitly claimed that China sells wind turbines to other countries but doesn't use them for their own needs.

That is of course a stupid lie.

But it's amazing how many smart liars say something similar to "China controls 70℅ of the global wind market" without clarifying that they install nearly all of that in China because they installed 73% of new wind capacity in 2025.

ZeroGravitas··on Google will buy half the electricity from one of Finland's nuclear power plants
The government that keeps rejecting offshore wind for bogus security reasons is probably a bigger factor.

Those wind farms would have connected into the zones with the highest prices.

They've rejected an amount that would generate more than the entire grid usage. Or way more than double what the cheap zones generate from their 2/3rds hydro and 1/3rd wind.

ZeroGravitas··on Google will buy half the electricity from one of Finland's nuclear power plants
When Google was going hard on deploying renewables they stressed "additionality".

They didn't want to just buy clean hydro that already existed, or renewables that were going to get built anyway without their money, they wanted to be sure that their investment was growing the amount of clean energy available.

I'm hoping they have some justification like this for buying existing nuclear. They appear to be claiming that it would shut if they didn't pay in advance.

A similar deal by Amazon got shot down in America because the regulators realised it was shifting costs onto other grid users.

You'd assume that Finnish regulators are better than American regulators, but I’d like to see some evidence of that.

ZeroGravitas··on The Iron Heel by Jack London
I wonder if Margaret Atwood was inspired by the framing device of this book for The Handmaid's Tale.

Both are looking back on future dystopias from the further future beyond them.
