Zergy··on Woman becomes obese after fecal transplant from overweight donor
Can't reply to your latest comment.

Umm I never made a claim, you did and I asked you to back it up. You haven't even tried to do this instead you got defensive and launched personal attacks. So I'll take that as no you have no evidence to support your opinion. What evidence is there that being overweight is not an issue of regulating (this is the self control part) your caloric intake?

Please don't be condescending when you don't know the basic terminology for the topic being discussed especially when the info is a Google search away.

TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) = BMR + Energy expended in a day.

It is very clear concept. Have the self control to master the mental elements and eat less calories than your TDEE and you lose weight. My question do you have research/evidence that disputes this? In my opinion as long as the truth is that being overweight is caused by eating more food than you need, the mentality of "fatty has no self control" is reasonable.

It was certainly true of me 40lbs ago.

> Your body is immensely complex, can rid itself of toxins, pathogens, and other invaders ... but is not able to discard excess calories it doesn't need? To the point of making you sick and immobile? That makes sense to you? That our body doesn't have a regulation mechanism?

Umm.... You are aware that this state of a ton of food being very easy to procure is a recent development right? For a vast majority of the body's evolution food as very rare which resulted in being able to conserve energy optimally being ideal. Evolution is a sum of the entire species past, why are you thinking it makes sense for the body to self regulate its self to a six pack?

> I believe in many cases it is well documented that obesity isn't caused by a lack of self-control.

Please show me the documentation because nearly everything I have read is to the contrary. More specifically I am interested if there are cases where someone eats less than their TDEE and doesn't lose weight or a case where eating at TDEE is unhealthy for some reason.

Zergy··on Companies That Want to Charge You for Negative Reviews
Its about as hilarious as the other arbitrary value systems such as money and review scores which exist offline. I find it more amusing how so many people fail to recognize all these things that are "bizarre" or "hilarious" on the internet are perfectly mundane concepts they've worked with all their lives.
Zergy··on Why asking complex low-level algorithms in a Java job interview?
How are you supposed to demonstrate those skills in an hour doing anything? The only practical way to determine high level skills, such as the ones you listed, is through studying past work. The company has probably already formed an opinion on those skills and is testing to see how well rounded your skill set is.
Zergy··on How to deal with arrogant developers?
He said they were "peers of mine". For all we know they are arrogant around peers they don't respect but are willing to learn from more capable or senior developers.
Zergy··on How much should I pay them?
My Coop while I was a Georgia Tech student payed 16.50$ to start out. The people I knew who did some free lance or part time development charged or were payed between 10$ to 30$ depending on their reputation.
Zergy··on Ask HN: What music do you listen to while programming?
I like to listen to this YouTube playlist I created https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1AEDED4BDDADFDD1.
Zergy··on Ask HN: Why do the majority of JS developers prefer spaces over tabs?
> "Explicit is better than implicit"

Seems like a strong argument for sticking with strongly typed languages.

Zergy··on What ORMs have taught me: just learn SQL
It seems this would be bypassed by letting the IDE hit the DB to fetch table information.
Zergy··on JQuery SSL Certificates Expire
Wouldn't this be solved by hosting it on your own site?
Zergy··on Open Source OCR in JavaScript
I used the ABBYY orc engine to digitize printed documents (idk why they couldn't just keep around the file used to print) and it was quite accurate. At worst one out of a couple hundred would have enough issues where readability was an issue.
Zergy··on Nintendo finds itself under fire from furious shareholders
Nintendo develops hardware to support their IPs just as much as they alter their games to take advantage of each generation of hardware.

Each generation of console adds a new method of adding input to the game. Each generation they evolve both evolve their existing IPs to best take advantage of the new hardware and develop their hardware to best support the development of their IPs. For example the C buttons for the N64 controller were added to solve the cameras issues encountered during the development of Mario 64.

This is lost on a lot people. The pairing of Nintendo hardware and software developed as a package to compliment each other is a huge part of Nintendo's success. Just look at the Mario service and see how many times its been reinvented using the same basic controls, running and jumping. All of those reinventions were developed in tangent with new hardware.

I suppose my point is, putting Nintendo's IPs on mobile or another console destroys what has allowed the IPs to remain so successful for so long. It would make both Nintendo's hardware and software less valuable.

Zergy··on Headphones and Earphones Benchmarking Test Files
"Matt Engstrom, director of monitoring products at Shure, admits there is evidence that suggests transducers in larger headphones can experience burn-in, and that this could, in theory, produce different sound over time."

I would agree that IEMs (the E1 is an IEM which is different than headphones) don't require burn in and the signiture change is not noticable. But even your evidence against burn in doesn't dispute headphones with large drivers (traditionally audiphile grade headphones) have sound signiture that alter with use.

Thank you for providing more evidence for my point and against yours. I would reccomend reading past the title next time.

Zergy··on Headphones and Earphones Benchmarking Test Files
Amusing that you bring up engines which do require break in. A brand new motor operates less efficiently producing both less horsepower and less fuel efficent than a broken in motor.

"In general, people no longer break in the engines of their own vehicles after purchasing a car or motorcycle, because the process is done in production." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Break-in_(mechanical_run-in)#En...

Anyways there is very little dispute that headphones sound different off the shelf compared to having been used for a significant amount of time. People dispute if those changes are noticeable or not, but few dispute that the sound signature changes.

Anyways you have brought forth no evidence to support your claim, while dismissing evidence against you opinion as non-conclusive. At the least you might want to be less dismissive and silly with your analogies.

Zergy··on Battle of Brothers: A Video Game Programming Duel
You are assuming quality is correlated with it being a hit, this is not true at all. Thinking of Flappy Bird as an obvious example.
Zergy··on Sparkfun offering discounts on Arduino day
Linux, Windows, and Mac are all supported by the tools. Additionally the tools are very light weight, just about everything can run them no problem.
Zergy··on Why is the size of RAM always in powers of 2?
Individual sticks of memory always are powers of 2 because of how multiplexers/demultiplexers work.

Basically there is a bit of circuit where every word of memory connects to a bus. The Mux decides which one of the words is loaded on the bus. A series of wires controls which gate is open.

If there is 1 wire there are two possibilities

0, 1

If there are 2 wires there are four possibilities

00, 01, 10, 11

If there are n wires there are n^2 possibilities.

Not using all the possible words for the number of wires. Example 3 words when using 2 wires would cause there to be inputs that break the state machine the instruction stack is interacting with and make developing for the chip very complicated.

So the number of words that can be pulled is restricted by the capacity of the Mux, which is driven by wires that are either off or on. This causes the powers of 2.

Zergy··on Tessel, a NodeJS-based microcontroller
Well now that just ruins the fun of programming on a microcontroller. I like my little Arduino and Teensies because its low level programming, bare metal programming.
Zergy··on Ask HN: Someone just tried to break into my home. Security tech recommendations?
The dog doesn't have to eat the person just make a ton of noise.
Zergy··on Fluffing your CV with skills
There are places that pay well and don't ask many if any technical questions. If you get to the interviews and are a good cultural fit you are in. Unfortunate but true.
Zergy··on Ask HN: Why aren't you working on a startup?
I'm in a very similar situation. I graduate December and intent to work in a coperate environment where I can learn about the involved market.

My issue has been I don't know enough about the world to know where and can apply my skills to solve problems.

Zergy··on Why Female Soldiers Were Finally Added to Call of Duty's Multiplayer
There is.

To maximize sales the COD engine is designed for the weakest system for it to run on.

The Xbox 360 has half a gig or ram and that is shared with the OS, memory is an extremely tight commodity. It is quite reasonable to think that another mesh, texture map, and additional sounds clips will simply not fit in the 300ish megs that XBox developers have to deal with.

Of course that can be designed around by having an engine that smart about pulling things in and out of memory. But that's hard to do especially when you have to release a game every year.

I should point out I'm talking about multiplayer mainly. There isn't a technical reason for the single player other than it is a lot of extra work.

Zergy··on The costly criminalisation of the mentally ill
It includes pederasty but is not exclusive to it. A male citizen having sex with a male slave when both are adults was considered fine too. From my understanding it was acceptable so long as it was a citizen with anyone of lower class.
Zergy··on The costly criminalisation of the mentally ill
Not true in the slightest. Ancient Greece and Rome all the way up untill the Holy Roman Empire had no problems with homosexuality especially when it was citizens against members of the lower classes.

Homosexuality was quite common and accepted in Europe until the widespread adoption of Christianity.

Zergy··on Report: TSA employee misconduct up 26% in 3 years
> we could hopefully influence the TSAs retention rates.

Good luck with that. Most people at TSA would have quit if they could find a better job to work at.

Zergy··on Light completely stopped for a record-breaking minute
I belive I kind of understand what you are saying.

I am confused as to whether or not the photons actually stop moving. Since they halt them by shutting off the transparency it seems that the photons would get trapped and end up bouncing around being absorbed slowly.

Is that why the effect is temporary? The light eventually gets absorbed and disperced though the crystal?

Zergy··on Light completely stopped for a record-breaking minute
I thought light was not effected by gravity but by the increased distance it had to travel due to warping effect on time/space caused by gravity?
