Zebfross··on Chopping up books when they're physically too big
I love my kindle for this exact reason. I never shy away from a book that's "too big" anymore because I have no idea how big it is!
Zebfross··on New type of dice guarantees no tie when deciding who goes first
For those as confused as me, I'm pretty sure this isn't "new". Numberphile talked about doing even better than this several years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5q32heFz1bs
Zebfross··on Inception-style curved map for turn-by-turn directions
Mine gets stuck at loading 90%.
Zebfross··on We found a division by zero bug in FFmpeg with a vibecoded fuzzer
Why submit an issue rather than just making the fix and adding the tests in PR? Seems like they're just making work for the maintainers.
Zebfross··on Show HN: Open source math games and puzzles
Just wanted an open place to explore interesting mathematical concepts :)
Zebfross··on We made Grok 4.5, GPT-5.5, and Claude build the same apps
Isn’t the number of turns most important? Some agents take repeated input, while others can mostly one-shot what I’m looking for.
Zebfross··on A better way to tie gym shorts (or any drawstring) [video]
I think he means that if you ever accidentally tie the knot wrong, then it can end up difficult to untie.
Zebfross··on Show HN: Chess-Inspired Roguelike
Fun game! There should be a check mate though, right?
Zebfross··on Why XML tags are so fundamental to Claude
I thought the goal was minimal instruction to let Claude determine the best way to solve the problem. Not adding this to my workflow anytime soon.
Zebfross··on Open models by OpenAI
Am I the only one who thinks taking a huge model trained on the entire internet and fine tuning it is a complete waste? How is your small bit of data going to affect it in the least?
Zebfross··on AI Meets WinDBG
Considering AI is trained on the average human experience, I have a hard time believing it would be able to make any significant difference in this area. The best experience I’ve had debugging at this level was using Microsoft’s time travel debugger which allows stepping forward and back.
Zebfross··on I'd rather read the prompt
I am personally proud of my use of AI because for anything non-trivial it is generally a conversation where each recommendation needs to be altered by an imaginative suggestion. So ultimately it’s the entire conversation that needs to be considered, not just the “final” prompt.
Zebfross··on Show HN: I got laid off from Meta and created a minor hit on Steam
My understanding is that roguelike means that when you die you start over from the beginning.
Zebfross··on The year I didn't survive
Having a child is hard, so having a child by yourself must be harder. All I know is that our hearts don't fill up and can always fit more love.
Zebfross··on Notre Dame Cathedral reopens
We were very lucky to see Notre Dame before it burned. So glad it’s been restored.
Zebfross··on Toasts are bad UX
My only problem with YouTube toasts is when the toast to confirm you've enabled closed captions covers up the closed captions you were trying to see.
Zebfross··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (July 2024)
Location: Seattle

Remote: Yes

Willing to relocate: Probably not

Technologies: C++, PHP, JavaScript, TypeScript

Résumé/CV: https://tradelineworks.com/wp-content/uploads/_pda/2024/07/Z...

Email: <HN username at> outlook.com

Former Microsoft, left to start my own company, and now looking for other opportunities!

Zebfross··on A useful front-end confetti animation library
I added confetti to our salespeople's admin dashboard for when they make a sale. Surprisingly enjoyable and motivating.

Zebfross··on Cow Magnets
I had a pair of these growing up, and they're super fun to play with. They have great interactions and make interesting sounds.
Zebfross··on Tinnitus linked to undetected auditory nerve damage
PSA: I thought I had tinnitus but it was just ear wax sitting against my eardrum. A doctor cleared it up in 15 minutes.
Zebfross··on The washing machine in my ear, and an empty boat
PSA anytime tinnitus is brought up. I thought I had tinnitus but it turned out to be ear wax resting against my ear drum, and the doctor fixed it in about 5 minutes.
Zebfross··on Urgent: Sign the petition now
I would say it's risky to keep such large deposits with a small bank. We use Wells Fargo for a reason; they make conservative investments and are very unlikely to be shutting down.
Zebfross··on Evidence that Adani Group has engaged in stock manipulation and accounting fraud
I think it's usually that the company's failure would have too large an impact on the economy or other dependent companies, so it will get bailed out by the dependents or the government.
Zebfross··on Ask HN: Stripe holding funds for 120 days for no reason
It all depends on your setup. The technical work was only a week for us. Getting approval and setup with a merchant account takes more time though, and they even came to do a physical inspection of our place.
Zebfross··on Ask HN: Stripe holding funds for 120 days for no reason
We switched to Authorize.net because the business risk at Stripe was just too high. The api isn't near as good, but it works, and we don't worry about random account freezes.
Zebfross··on Auditory brainstem response distinguishes occasional and constant tinnitus
And it could be caused by wax buildup that eventually touches the eardrum, something a doctor can verify and take care of in 15 minutes.
Zebfross··on Introduction to Microsoft Excel (1992) [video]
Semi-related, but if you haven't seen Joel Spolsky's Excel crash course, it's the best Excel video a I've ever seen: https://youtu.be/0nbkaYsR94c
Zebfross··on Show HN: Redditle.com – For those of us who add 'Reddit' to every Google search
It can be the most reliable place to find a group of real people all knowledgeable about the same thing. So things like “best weekend itinerary in x city”.
Zebfross··on Laziness does not exist (2018)
According to Mythbusters it warms your extremities by cooling your core.
