ZachS··on Aliens Are Out There – But They Probably Don't Care About Us
It could be an Ent situation, they live too long to interact with something that only lives 100 years.
ZachS··on Show HN: Svelte NodeGUI, a lightweight Electron alternative with native UI
What sort of vulnerabilities are you worried about? You're running trusted code, connecting to a trusted service via https. Not browsing arbitrary websites. I doubt many vulnerabilities would affect this.
ZachS··on Robinhood Play Store listing went from 329K reviews to 180K in few hours
gaming reviews to extract money is insulting
ZachS··on Microsoft Space Simulator (Or, Charles Guy’s Galaxy in a Box)
If you'd like to play the game :-)

ZachS··on There are no projects like side projects
I talk to a lot of people and try to find those who need a specific project done. I try not to take on "open ended" jobs.
ZachS··on There are no projects like side projects
The biggest dangers are going to be non-paying clients, and leads drying up. If you can't find any leads, you'll end up spending all your "self time" eaten up with business development.
ZachS··on There are no projects like side projects
This is essentially what I've been doing for about a year and a half.

I've found that the best way to do it is to focus 100% on client projects for a month or two, and then take a month or two for yourself. IMHO "single-tasking" results in much better quality work.

While you're working on your own thing, you should be meeting with potential clients and setting up your next paying gig, since the sales cycle on a couple month project large enough is about a few weeks to a month anyways.

ZachS··on Why Sweden Has So Few Road Deaths
Yes, absolutely.

My comment was actually incorrect, since it's 11.4 in 100,000 per year. I think I'd want my spouse to spend 1/5th less time driving for the increase in risk.

ZachS··on Why Sweden Has So Few Road Deaths
I'm not convinced the added safety is worth it.

If you had the choice between getting to your destination in 20 minutes, with a 11.4 in 100,000 chance of dying, or arriving in 25 minutes with a 3 in 100,000 chance, which would you choose?

ZachS··on Transatlantic flying: Wow throws a curve-ball
Good. that's probably an indication that what most people really want is to get from point A to point B as quickly and cheaply as possible.
ZachS··on Show HN: Open-Source, Free, Agile Project Management Tool
The browser is constantly repainting the polygon background at the top of the page, even when you've scrolled past it.
ZachS··on Show HN: iDoneThis+AwesomenessReminders, Get Work Done, Get Awesomeness
Wait. What? I'm gonna need some deets here. Please provide more context to the story of your paying strangers to call up your girlfriend every day.

-What did you have them say? -Did she find your delegation of affection to a paid third party extremely bizarre and off-putting? -What was her reaction to only receiving encouraging calls from strangers twice a week rather than every day?

ZachS··on Crockford on Bootstrap's semicolon omission: “insanely stupid code”
I'm curious what these pitfalls are, and how using semicolons fixes the problem.
ZachS··on Cookie.js – simplifying cookies in JavaScript
Very cool. I'll definitely use this in the future. Also the chaining syntax is really cool.
ZachS··on Show HN: SpaceMagic, a real-time node.js framework
Fixed
ZachS··on Show HN: SpaceMagic, a real-time node.js framework
Looking into it now, it has something to do with iframes and pushstate.
ZachS··on Show HN: SpaceMagic, a real-time node.js framework
I use "real-time" in this fashion because describing it as "soft real-time" seems weird.
ZachS··on The last third-party Javascript snippet you'll ever need
A web2.0 web based GUI for uglify-js and closure compiler. Just what I've always wanted.
ZachS··on Synthetic "tree" captures more carbon than a real one
I'd personally much rather see the source of the problem fixed (reduce carbon emissions). I also hope this doesn't turn into an excuse to clear-cut more rain forests.

i.e. We'll cut down the real trees and replace them with efficient carbon collecting "tree" buildings.

ZachS··on Google's Chiller-Less Data Center
They already are, look at all the worthless twitter, blog, and forum posts that Google has stored in their data centers.
ZachS··on To Run Better, Start by Ditching Your Nikes
Those paper thin spikes are NOT meant for comfort, and aren't for running more than 800 or so meters. For distance events (1600+) spikes resemble more of a running shoe.
ZachS··on To Run Better, Start by Ditching Your Nikes
What works for me is running in shoes for my workout, and then doing barefoot strides in a grassy field to strengthen my feet and ankles and improve my form. Running barefoot everywhere would be hard, mostly because there aren't a lot of soft trails for bare feet.
ZachS··on It's Alive: Mac OS X on Non-Apple Hardware
It'd be a lot less work to just buy a legit Mac. ;-)
ZachS··on [dead]
I don't believe in anything supernatural.
ZachS··on HN, Please Review My Startup: Stormweight.com
It must have something to do with Guitar Hero and Rock Band.
ZachS··on HN, Please Review My Startup: Stormweight.com
It's an interesting idea, the first thing I noticed was that the design doesn't look very modern or professional, it gives a bad first impression.

The outer glow on the logo is kinda tacky. I can tell you've invested a lot of time into this, so investing in a really talented designer/brander might be something to look into.

Your mac screenshot image covers up half of the learn more and sign up buttons. It's an easy fix, give this selector ( body.brochure.new_index #landing.box #screenshot a )position: relative and give em a z-index:1000 or something.

Also, you have a lot of serif fonts, maybe you should consider making your menu and header text sans serif?

ZachS··on Ask HN: Why do people (you) give feedback?
Oh, I see I think I misunderstood your question. HN has points, and it's more of a two way "discussion." Maybe you should, rather than have comments have discussions (I know this is probably the same thing given a different name)

As for the second problem, I guess (personally) I see a huge textbox where you ask for my name, email and an optional website, and I just don't feel motivated. I think you could have a small, anonymous comment spot that felt more like a tweet rather than a post.

Oh and as an aside, I didn't realize that you had the comment overlay button when I viewed a site. Maybe add some words to the icon to make it OBVIOUS for unobservant people like me?

ZachS··on Ask HN: Why do people (you) give feedback?
I think you have to find the right type of people to write full reviews without incentive. Maybe people would be more apt to review sites if it wasn't so much work. Maybe you could use a system where people type a couple of words in review of the site, rather than a huge amazon.com style product review.

You could just put a small textarea up in your top launchly info frame where people can leave small page specific comments about sites.

Speaking from personal experience, I went to your site clicked around, looked at a couple of the sites. I did find a few things that I could suggest about them, but didn't have the motivation to write a dissertation about the problems.

Hope this helps.

ZachS··on Most Facebook users are older, 35-54 now largest age group
Wow, that's interesting, my gut reaction was that the site had turned into a free alternative to classmates.com.
