YouMeWeThem··on Japanese verb conjugation the simple hard way
This is pedantic but you're thinking of "romanization", the act of transliterating Japanese with the Roman alphabet (romaji). There are different systems of romanization, most notably Hepburn and Kunrei. In Hepburn shi is correct, in Kunrei si is correct.

It sounds like you're saying "si" are not valid characters in the Roman alphabet.

I got Calrose about a month back for just over 3000 yen, which is slightly cheaper than the homegrown stuff. The issue is that a year ago the homegrown stuff was going for 1500 yen.

FYI, The length-of-stay requirements for permanent residence are actually longer than for citizenship.

Guidelines for Permission for Permanent Residence [1]

> In principle, the person has stayed in Japan for more than 10 years consecutively.

What are the conditions for naturalization? [2]

> The person must have been domiciled in Japan for five years or more consecutively

This is a common misconception. The reason you don't hear more about English-speaking westerners gaining Japanese citizenship is because they don't recognize dual citizenship. Renouncing your non-Japanese citizenships is a prerequisite to gaining Japanese citizenship, which is understandably too big a hurdle for many.

The insistence on using non-standard capitalization in Japanese organization names is too damn high. Why must JAPAN be written in all caps?

(My company similarly insists on not capitalizing the first letter of the name in English text, ugh)

In Japan they're also often missing the "willing to rent to foreigners" flag. Using aggregate sites like Suumo to find places you like ends up being a waste of time when so many places won't even consider you.

I'm a programmer in Japan. This is completely normal.

It looks ridiculous to have English syntax mixed in with Japanese variables, not great for legibility.

YouMeWeThem··on Falsehoods Programmers Believe About Names (2010)
The unfortunate thing in Japan, where I (as well as the author, I believe) reside, is that the government decided to cop out on documentation for foreign residents. Every foreign resident is required to carry an official residence card, which is printed with your name exactly as it appears on your passport. You may think "aren't names in passports written with Latin characters?", and you may also be thinking "isn't the official language of Japan written with non-Latin characters?" Yes, to both.

So basically foreign residents don't have an official Japanese transliteration of their name by default. This is a problem because almost all systems in Japan are made with Japanese people in mind. If you have a middle name then you're basically guaranteed to run into an issue at some point where an application requires your name to match your ID exactly, but the internal system only accepts an input of up to (for example) 16 characters.
