No, the US is screwed over. From what I've read, many areas in the US are completely reliant on imports because of how the current logistics and production/processing chain/infrastructure is setup. And the market disruption caused by an export ban would wreak complete havoc in those regions and cause significant price spikes starting from diesel and then rippling out to anything reliant on it.
This is why he hasn't done it yet. Everybody in the US with money at stake called him and told him it was a stupid idea.
In theory. This up to the manufacturers and they're not doing that, so it's quite different from non-ARM laptops, where this is basically standardized.
It's not necessarily any better on Windows. I've worked with Qualcomm based laptops that wouldn't work without a bespoke Windows image from the manufacturer. I also had one where the "generic" ARM Windows image wouldn't work with it even though it should've and the manufacturer never provided a bespoke image.
Sorry, what? The benefit is that we have these games to play. That is the intrinsic benefit. Most of us don't care about the other things you listed when all we want to do is play old games. You're free to value those things in this context and that's fine, but it's weird to impose those values on others when they're providing what people want.
I suspect the improvements are even more dramatic going from Zen 1 through to Zen 5. AMD has really hit the jackpot with how scalable the Ryzen CPU is considering how they're able to improve the performance from year to year. This is a stark difference to the FX series during the 2010s, which saw very small YoY performance increases by comparison. Ryzen really is AMD's equivalent to what Nehalem/Core was for Intel back in the mid 2000s.
Steam does this. If I want to login, it shows a barcode I can scan with the app and it logs me in without needing to enter my login information. Phone needs internet access, doesn't need to be on the same network as the device I'm logging in on.
I assume the QR code contains a token for the device, which is used by the app to authorize the login and the server automatically logs in the client on the device with the matching token.
Seems a lot safer to me than using my login credentials on a potentially unsafe device.
I don't know why this myth keeps getting perpetuated. It's simply not true. The countless game discs I own that let me install and play the game without internet access are proof of that. There are some games where the game acts as a key and doesn't contain the full game, but this isn't the rule.
Even as imperfect as it is, it's infinitely better than the alternatives like belief in religion/religious texts/pastors or anybody else who is just making shit up based on whatever they think sounds good. None of that is falsifiable or makes any attempt to iteratively arrive at anything true or real.
There is literally nothing better that we have other than the scientific method. Yes, science is self-correcting, even if it is slow or whatever else. Nothing else that we have can approach even that bar.
That's crazy. Apparently they still have at least 500 employees and make $500 million a year in revenue. Last time I encountered a Matrox was the G400 I had in my PC in 1999. It's no wonder they're talked about in the past tense when they exited the consumer hardware space over 20 years ago.
Probably the greatest achievement of modern society, a rebirth of the Library of Alexandria. Of course, only private for-business corporations are allowed to steal the world's knowledge, apparently, and only to be able to monetise it. There's something deeply wrong with our civilization that Anna's Archive is punished while companies like OpenAI, Google, Amazon, Anthropic, etc are just ... ignored when they do things like destructively digitise books or pirate things.
Show multiple pages at once. Makes it easier to go back and forth. It's actually a huge QOL improvement such that I can't stand reading books on a normal phone anymore.
What a colossal disaster. I was a huge Windows Phone fan, so their yearly missteps were quite painful to watch. I was especially annoyed when my first gen WP wasn't going to get an upgrade to WP8. My HTC 7 Pro is still my favourite phone I've ever owned, but after that I finally gave up and switched to Android.
What makes you think Google is unable to buy Nvidia GPUs? They buy tons of them for their cloud infrastructure. Nvidia will sell to anybody with the money to pay.
Having worked in multiple EU companies that went to great effort to comply with GDPR and also had legitimate issues that needed to be resolved under threat of real fines, this is just an incorrect take.
Not everybody wants to learn to play a real guitar though. I play Guitar Hero for fun and entertainment as she clearly states in her post. It's literally just a game and it never pretends to be a way to learn how to play a real guitar. And when I've played it for a few weeks, I can put it down and play another game from my massive collection without the guilt associated with buying a guitar and the USB interface needed for Rocksmith and feeling like I've abandoned yet another hobby. Guitar Hero is guilt-free fun. That's valuable in itself.
Have you maybe documented this anywhere or do you have suggestions for repos to look at that do this? This sounds interesting and I'd like to look into this myself
Every time I see a new Microsoft domain I've never seen before, I have to double check that it's actually legit. Every time I realize anew why people still fall for phishing attempts, because all these legit domains look like phishing attempts.
This logic doesn't hold under closer scrutiny. The timeline to expand missile production is on the order of years. This isn't the 1940s anymore where you can convert every car factory into making tanks and missiles. The idea of a war economy is wildly outdated. Either you have enough stockpiled until your weapons manufacturers can scale their production, or you're just out of missiles. Being out after some weeks of a "military operation" is frankly a damning indictment of the US military's logistics and manufacturing.
This is literally what central banks do. Central banks influence the economy with monetary policy, including things like this. That's all they're allowed to do, since they're intentionally not a political institution and have no legislative or executive authority. If you want the root cause to be handled, that's up to the legislative body. That's not the central bank's job.
Yes, which bet? I agree. There's no bet here. The comment correctly outlines why the US is doing this and how it benefits. And instead of concluding that "this is why they're doing it", they're making some weird hint that they're shorting the Euro and that somehow this doesn't pay off if the trade isn't favourable or something else? They benefit by BoJ not selling US treasuries. It doesn't matter how EUR is valued against JPY. It's not a bet between these two currencies. Europe would also benefit by their currency getting weaker, since it's filled with export-heavy countries like Germany.
US sells EUR, buys JPY, BoJ doesn't need to sell US treasuries. There's no bet here. What do you mean by bet? They could be losing money on the trade and it wouldn't matter as long as they avoid US treasury yields from rising any further.
I considered it, but there's no path towards a console port afaict since NativeAOT isn't supported yet, and I want to avoid being locked out of any platforms in the future. I've been playing my game on my phone and my Deck against the same server and being able to switch between devices whenever I want really appeals to me.
