YinglingLight··on Sunlight through glass does not provide Vitamin D
break up with your SO.
YinglingLight··on SF is so expensive that waiters can no longer afford to live in the city
I'm preeeety sure each and every restaurant owner is keenly aware of how their business will fluctuate if they change prices. This is their livelihood after all.
YinglingLight··on Tell HN: Aaron Swartz's website is offline
I'm curious as to which kind of non-broadcast local news you're talking about. Aside from a motley mix of small town newspapers, this kind of source doesn't exist anymore.
YinglingLight··on Missing Emirati princess 'planned escape for seven years'
It was a random non sequitur "b-b-but look at how bad XYZ country is" that added nothing. Choose a different hill to die on.
YinglingLight··on The Second Half of Watergate Was Bigger, Worse, and Forgotten by the Public
You know HN, I'd sincerely like to read arguments without having to highlight them due to your pseudo-censorship font.
YinglingLight··on As women have more equal opportunity, the more their preferences differ from men
>Why would you want equality of outcomes anyway? It goes against individual Freedom.

"An interesting article in The Atlantic talks about studies showing that liberals think in terms of fairness while conservatives think in terms of morality. So if you want to persuade someone on the other team, you need to speak in their language. We almost never do that. That’s why you rarely see people change their opinions.

....If your aim is to persuade, you have to speak the language of the other. Talking about fairness to a conservative, or morality to a liberal, fails at the starting gate. The other side just can’t hear what you are saying."

YinglingLight··on Student-Loan Debt Is Crushing Millennials
What's absurd about that? The bank has no salvageable assets to claim. They can't claim 4 years of European Literature from your mind.
YinglingLight··on YouTube comments are heavily manipulated, and I fear for our democracy
Believe me. You can be politically aware and still fall into a hallucination bubble.

However I will say that Engineers, good ones, are accustomed to being wrong and taking the initiative to change their thinking.

YinglingLight··on The Surprising Power of the Long Game
You can't choose the family you have, but you can choose the family you make.
YinglingLight··on The Digital Gap Between Rich and Poor Kids Is Not What Was Expected
My gf worked at a day-care, said the number of daycare workers who spend more time on the phone than with the kids is staggering.
YinglingLight··on “Stress Hormone” Cortisol Linked to Early Toll on Thinking Ability
>Yet average stress level seems to be getting higher and higher.

An important point is the occurrence of "Dominance Hierarchies" which has been persistent in animals/human since the dawn of time. In a small hamlet, it was 'easy' to become known as the best blacksmith, the fastest runner, the best storyteller. You physiology literally changes and you gain an increase in dopamine receptors.

With the rise of technology, we are exposed to Dominance Hierarchies of much grander scope. Kids (and adults) are evaluating themselves against Instagram models and NFL Stars. A 14 year old can win their local brazilian jiu-jitsu tournament and still feel inadequate.

YinglingLight··on List of 600 free online courses launched by 190 universities
>can really drive home the fear

Instead of coming from a place of scarcity I'd view it from a place of plenty.

"gimmie options" -> Talent Stack

The more wide and experienced your Talent Stack is, the 'luckier' you'll become in life.

YinglingLight··on As a female engineer, I am not diversity
Touching display of political diversity from within Google https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2018/09/13/breitbart...
YinglingLight··on Why We Still Need Monsters (2017)
Found Stephen Paddock a weird choice of focus for the article. Perhaps we expected a motive to be discovered by law enforcement a year from now.
YinglingLight··on Green tea supplements ruined my liver
Lol. Guess this means I live life on the edge.
YinglingLight··on Women and the slowing global population
Beautiful example of an ad hominem! I'd love to discuss what you disagree with in Peterson's view on responsibility.
YinglingLight··on Women and the slowing global population
"The higher degree of responsibility you voluntarily choose to bear, the richer your life will become. ...You have a complicated job, you try to solve problems, to aid suffering, and there's weight to that. There's deep meaning in that." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sg7NhHJsGq0
YinglingLight··on Women and the slowing global population
Even though responsibility is what gives life meaning. I feel like many men are 'checking out' of society's responsibilities (which need not be related to raising children) for a number of factors.
YinglingLight··on Ways people trying to do good accidentally do harm instead and how to avoid them

YinglingLight··on Does being bored make us more creative? (2014)
You can tell people that the cure for ennui doesn't involve mind-altering drugs (just exercise, diet, social/community involvement) without being sneered at. That's the difference.
YinglingLight··on How Exercise Might “Clean” the Alzheimer's Brain
>Arnold type body looks great on photos, but is utterly impractical for normal life

No one gets "buff" on accident. No one gets to the size where they have trouble fitting through a door on accident (and without drugs).

>Low rep means you are close to your limits, which is area where injuries happen a lot

High reps = more movement, and just like a hard disk drive, more movement means more chances for failure. The injury that sent me to the chiropractor was a warm-up ~125lb Deadlift that I did with impromper form. Weight does not correlate with Injury risk.

>what good is it to be able to lift 100kg 3x times and you're done, when you need to move apartment for example

The "joints and connective tissue" (tendons aka grip) you mentioned prior is exactly what gets trained on heavy reps, and takes a LONG time to develop.

YinglingLight··on Coders Automating Their Own Job
>who believe with all of their heart that God wanted them to find it

Yeah OP is way off on his God scapegoat. People in the West are far more likely to not return a lost wallet due to the wide variance in cultural identity. Japanese people have such a shared identity which promotes a level of empathy that only Americans in small towns could hope to replicate. Call it hospitality. Religion has nothing to do with it.

YinglingLight··on Bracing for the Vanilla Boom
Delayed gratification is a huge predictor of wealth.
YinglingLight··on Telltale Autopsy
From personal experience I'd say services like Patreon/Kickstarter has made it easier to scratch a living as a Creative than ever before. There's 7.4 billion people on the planet. Make a fraction of 0.000001% enamored with your Creative product (be it yourself as an entertainer, your book series, your erotic app game, whatever), and you can hold your own.
YinglingLight··on How to Tell Us a Secret
Absolutely. What happened to investigative journalism? Shoutouts to https://www.realclearinvestigations.com/

Cut through layers of agenda pushers and give me facts.

YinglingLight··on Am I Happy At Work? Analyzing my entire career
Downside of FIRE/Mr. Money Mustache is that it promotes a 'scarcity mentality'- many believers would NEVER take a 6 month break from work to drain their savings.

A healthier mindset is a 'plentiful mindset', which promotes positive 'risks'. Say, taking off 6 months to develop a personal project of yours for potential income.

YinglingLight··on Am I Happy At Work? Analyzing my entire career
If you're not feeling productive in a some facet of your life, the Netflix binge-ing goes numb reeeeeeal quick.
YinglingLight··on Am I Happy At Work? Analyzing my entire career
"The more responsibility you take on, the more meaning your life has."

As a developer, you would do well to seek out the feedback from users/the impact your work has. Allow yourself to feel responsible for that impact. Taking ownership will make you feel more engaged than the dopamine hits of 'closing JIRA tickets'.

YinglingLight··on How can we resist the seduction of the mobile phone?
Monochrome mode - the lack of colors makes the phone less appealing to our monkey brains.
YinglingLight··on Preventing Muscle Loss as We Age
Those in their 80s have nothing but free time. Of course they won't have the energy to train 4-5x a week if they have been sedentary the last half of their life.
